"We loved the home in Matthews. It is lovely home on the water that welcomes you. We came into to Mathews for the Daffodil festival weekend- it was close to Gloucester. We were also able to drive to Irvington. The town of Mathews is just big enough and the visitor's center provided retail therapy with local business. We were sad to leave and hope to come back to this lovely home!"

  • A Unique Opportunity

"It is truly a unique opportunity to be able to stay at historic and beautiful Pop Castle. Our family of seven adults and 5 children under age 5 stayed here for a week in June. The first night, as I tucked one of the little grandchildren into her bed, she whispered in my ear, "I love this house". Two months later, back in her hometown, hardly a day goes by when she doesn't talk about the "River House". We were guests in a private home, without the owners hovering nearby! The kitchen was fully stocked with every pot, pan, spice, condiment, basket, bowl, utensil you could possibly need. As a family of cooks, we found there was everything we needed to create a feast or a picnic. Here's a rundown of all that we did and used on-site, in one week's stay: kayaked, cooked oysters out on grill, played croquet, swung from tree swing, caught crabs in pot off of dock, watched fireworks on July 4 from the dock, played games and cards, read, swam in river, dug in sand, played ball on the thick, lush lawn, walked, rode bikes, cooked out 3 lb. sirloin steak which we bought at market 5 min. from house, basketball, ping pong, drinks every evening under the huge oak trees, watched sunrises and sunsets, heard the rain on the roof, lived on the screened porch, watched movies, used instant and fast wifi, walked 2-3 miles safely on private roads, fished, played with doll house in kids' room, puzzles, ate well and slept soundly. The history of the house is fascinating and I highly recommend that you read everything you can find onsite about the house and property; let your imagination run free. While the house is old, it is beautifully restored, furnished, landscaped and well maintained. Bring very little as the property has everything you'll need, including hundreds of books and games for adults and children. The three villages of White Stone, Kilmarnock and Irvington are 5-20 min. drive and offer groceries, gas, propane, butcher, market, shops, and restaurants, but we didn't want to leave the property. As a change of pace, one family with kids found the nearby schools and churchyards that had climbing and swinging apparatus and took off for those a few mornings. Granddad, son and 5 yr. old grandson rented a fishing boat with captain and enjoyed a successful fishing expedition. The owner is responsive, personable, and thoughtful. I can testify to a fantastic family vacation and wholeheartedly recommend Pop Castle for any reunion, wedding, party, or family vacation."

  • Great vacation stay

"The house was the perfect base for my daughter's wedding at Gloucester Point. We had family from Texas, Alabama and Pennsylvania who were all able to stay in comfort. The house is clean, roomy and has lots of amenities. We enjoyed the canoe several times. The kids had a great time exploring the house and looking for seashells on the beach. The only drawback was that the water in the bathrooms smelled like sulfur, especially in the master suite."
