"What a lovely cottage in the woods this was! A treat indeed. The home is located in a very private and unpopulated area - perfect for those looking for some peace and solitude. It's nestled in the woods, atop the banks of the James River, so you get the best of both; woodlands and beach front. Staying for the week was myself, my husband and our two silly dogs.
1) The house is so cute. Clean and well stocked with everything you might need during your stay. Games and books abound, but we almost had no time for any of that. No wifi, no tv - no problem! But we actually brought our projector, drew the blinds and watched a scary movie one night! The grounds around the house were well kept and not overgrown. We didn't have a fire in the fire pit, but did spend some time relaxing around it, enjoying the views. The path to the river was easy to traverse, though I'm assuming anyone with mobility issues would find it difficult.
2) Down to the river front. First, kayaks and canoe, beach chairs - all you need for fun at the beach are at the bottom of the path! The beach will exceed your expectations. Far stretches of private beaches to the left and right. We saw no other souls the whole week. Our two dogs were in heaven. Prepare for sandy beachfront with tons of beautiful shells, fossils, shark teeth, etc! When you aren't looking down at all the neat beach findings, look up! We saw probably a half dozen different bald eagles daily - at least 4 juveniles and 3 mature, even hearing a couple chattering back and forth from time to time. Or look out over the river for the diving terns looking for their dinners. Also seen, belted kingfishers, great blue herons, red tail hawks, cormorants - and heard, eastern screech owls at dusk - a real birders paradise. We pretty much spent our days walking the property and beach from 7am to 7pm.
3) If you're into the whole boardwalk scene, this is definitely NOT the place for you. Again, very quite, not much in the way of local restaurants, shops, etc (but we enjoy that!!). We did not cross the ferry. Edwards Ham Shop in Surry had yummy lunch sandwiches. We also grabbed dinner take-out at Bubba's Chikin and Thangs (seriously) one night - pretty good fried chicken dinner!
It was the perfect getaway to unplug and recharge."
