  • The Cliffhanger at Massanutten

"We oohed and aahed as soon as we walked into the home. One whole wall is floor to ceiling windows overlooking the slopes. This main floor living room is large, open to the dining room and kitchen and was the main gathering place for our family of 11 ranging in age from 1 to 70. I loved that even when I was in the kitchen, I was still with everyone. We were all able to sit at the table together. There is also a loft and downstairs rec area which some of us used occassionally. The bedrooms are large with doors to the wrap- around decks and closets so large that our kids put port-a-cribs in them and used them as nurseries for the babies. There are four full baths so each adult couple had their own bath and there was another that was shared by the teens. Perfect. The owners supply all the basics (some places I looked at don't even supply towels) and give you a list in advance of things you might want to bring. They are very easy to talk to and had my deposit in the mail even before we got home. We had the best time. The owners even had a Christmas tree there for us. The weather was cold enough for them to make snow on the slopes but warm enough that we didn't have to deal with ice or snow on the roads. The access road to the house is very steep and I do think it might have been a problem for our little rental car and this aging Floridian. Our kids seemed much less concerned. The resort is impressive. We had debated between Wintergreen and this and this was by far the better choice for us. Although every one skied the first few days and loved it, we had rain the morning of our last day. Those in our party that are less that avid skiers relished the chance to go to the water park. (Bring towels- they don't rent them) There is so much to do in addition to skiing (see the website) and there is always that possibility of less than perfect skiing conditions. One thing I didn't see on the website but was great was a ski program for 4 to 11 year olds that runs from 8:30 - 1:30. - One instructor for six kids of the same age. Our 4 yr. old grandson loved it and was skiing by day 2. Although in advance, the vote on where to go was divided, after our visit, it was unanimous to return to Massanutten next year."

  • Getaway with 16 year old grandson

"This past week I spent four days in Mountain Whisper with my 16 year old grandson. He is high functioning asperger. We were quite pleased with our experience. The cabin was an excellent base camp as we fished, took the Luray Cavern tour, hiked, and found isolated areas to teach him how to shoot using my pellet rifle. Shenandoah River Outfitters is just down the hill from the cabin and the variety of their rentals should support most desires to spend time on the river. The cabin was immaculate when we arrived and the kitchen was very well stocked with eating and cooking utensils. It was not what I would have expected in a cabin - the appliances were in excellent condition - well honestly, i don't know if the stove worked because as two guys we didn't cook much indoors, but the microwave and refrigerator were excellent. I have seen several reviews on various sites commenting on the bed being only "full" size. The smaller of the 3 bedrooms has a full size bed but the other beds are definitely queen size. I rate my experience as 5 stars, not because it is the best cabin I have ever stayed in but because the cabin was exactly what my grandson and I needed and it met all expectations based on the various website descriptions. My grandson was especially happy having civilization (Walmart) relatively close by and he would recommend MIndi's for their chips and salsa. Jim D."

  • Just what we needed!

"This house was a fantastic find for us - secluded with everything we needed. Our four-legged kids loved playing in the river (so did we!). Great fishing, canoeing, reading, and relaxing. Thank you for sharing your beautiful home - we will be back!"

  • Great Cabin on the river

"We were travelling back to Williamsburg from Indiana and were looking for something secluded but also close to Luray Caverns and Skyline Drive. We were able to schedule a last minute mini vacation at the cabin and it was everything we were looking for. The owners were very accommodating and the cabin was very comfortable (I couldn't get my grandson off of the very large bean bag chair. We couldn't see or hear anything except for trees and water. It is a cabin and not a hotel so don't expect perfection as the cabin water did have a sulfur smell but overall it was great place for a vacation. It was well furnished and had the extras to make it comfortable. My grandson was happy that he didn't have to live without the internet or DirecTV in the evenings when we were done touring and canoeing. We hope to return again soon for a longer time period and spend more time relaxing and less touring."
