Whatcom Falls and Whatcom Creek Trails are a variety of gravel trails that include some steep areas and stairs. The facilities at Whatcom Falls include picnic areas, playgrounds, BBQ areas, restrooms and a fish hatchery. Nearby, Whatcom Creek Gorge has stunning waterfall views and a charming stone bridge. Many of the trails here also welcome biking and horseback riding.

At Samish Park, visitors will find a park of almost 40 acres nestled between the lake and Chuckanut Mountains. Here, there is an enclosed swimming area, boating area, fishing and hiking as well as a play area for children. Silver Lake Park is just a short drive from Bellingham and a great area at any time of year. At over 180 acres, the lake is ideal for a quiet day of fishing, either from the shore or by boat. There is also canoeing and kayaking or even pedal boats. Among the beach areas is Birch Bay Beach and Tideland which is a nice place for fishing, shell fishing, boating and beachcombing. Lighthouse Marine Park is a unique area, accessible only by water or from Canada. For centuries, the Native Straits Salish people have harvested sockeye salmon and the park is now one of the best places to spot the Orca whales. During the summer, visitors are regularly able to watch as pods of these impressive mammals make their way past. There is no sea-based whale watching tours, ensuring the whales are left in peace but they come so close to land that visitors will find them easy to watch.
