There are few vacation destinations that are as conveniently located as Berkeley Springs in West Virginia. It is within an easy distance of major cities like Balitmore (100 miles), Washington DC (145 miles), Pittsburgh (165 miles) and Philadelphia (180 miles). Berkeley Springs lodging in this region is also within an easy distance of many major arteries, the closest ones being Interstate 70 and State Routes 9 and 522 that cut through the area. It really could not be easier to get here. Once here, visitors find a continental climate providing hot summers and generally cool winters.

Berkeley Springs Cabins Are Ideal to "Take the Waters"

Visitors at Berkeley Springs vacation rentals will find this town is proud of its heritage. Dating from 1776, the town was originally known as Bath, after the English city famed for its healing waters. Much like its old name sake, visitors come to "take the waters," referring to the warm springs that run along the west side of the park in the center of town. The town is a great place for antiquing in the three malls and there is an excellent choice of restaurants. Today, the town sits around Berkeley Springs State Park of almost five acres where the ancient mineral springs still run along the west wall. Visitors may be interested to know that in wading through its waters, they are following in the footsteps of George Washington who stayed here. The site where President Washington took the waters is now a monument. In the town is also the Paw Paw Tunnel, on the renowned Potomac River. The tunnel is over 3,100 feet long and was once a wonder of the world. Nowadays, the town is part of the Washington Heritage Trail and also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

From here, visitors may wish to explore more of the Washington Heritage Trail through Morgan County. Following the trail takes visitors to many historic sites associated with America’s first President as well as many impressive natural areas. The Morgan County section of the Trail is some 80 miles of fascinating architecture and glorious wilderness.

Plenty of Outdoor Activities

Nearby to Berkeley Springs cabins is the 6,000-acre Cacapon Resort State Park. Here, visitors will find a wide variety of activities. The golf course, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., is an excellent course. Over 20 miles of the park is covered by hiking trails, ranging from easy to challenging. For those who enjoy shooting, there is a Wobble Clay Shooting Range where visitors can try trap shooting.

Within the region of West Virginia, visitors will find just about every outdoor activity available within a short distance. The area is famous for its whitewater rafting, with rivers from easy to "high adventure." This mountainous region is also perfect for hiking, biking, rock climbing, horseback riding, and ATV trails. The Hatfield-McCoy Trail System welcomes ATVs, dirt and mountain bikes, horseriders and hikers. The growing pursuit of geocaching is also available here, where participants use Global Positioning Systems in a modern version of a scavenger hunt. Geocaching is a great family activity and takes visitors on a hunt across the area’s most beautiful locations. The beauty of West Virginia is not all found above ground, and visitors often enjoy exploring the caves and caverns around the region. During the winter, the area is a perfect place for downhill and cross country skiing, snowboarding, tubing and snowmobiling.
