  • Perfect vacation

"My friend and I take an annual trip to Barbour County WV to archery hunt whitetail deer. We have made this trip since 1999 and typically stay at a hotel in Philippi. As most travelers know living in a small hotel room for more than a few days can be difficult. Add to fact we had to stow away all our hunting equipment and go out for dinner every meal made the hotel very difficult to stay in. A friend told me about VRBO and said I could find a place anywhere in the country. I was shocked to find this incredible property and immediately emailed the owners. I learned the property was within four miles of our hunting land. I booked the house instantly. The house is amazing, the land is beautiful, the kitchen was incredible. To have an entire home to spread out in and areas to store our equipment was amazing. We already rebooked for next November. The only caution I would give is if you are there in the winter make sure you have a high quality 4WD vehicle to get up and down the driveway in case of snow."

  • Close to it all and cozy

"Us group of co-workers stayed here early in 2014. There were 5 in our party, so the sleeping arrangements worked out perfect. We had one couple (they got the big bed) then two women shared the dual twin room and the lone guy took the double. Worked out just fine. Plenty of room, and quiet in the rooms if you wanted to sneak away for a cat nap. This place, as with any place you stay has its pros and cons. We were very happy with the location, as it is seriously right across the street from the heart of the Village (shuttle service, restaurants, & lift ticket pick up are all right there! Very nice). You do have to climb/decend a lengthy staircase though (which can be difficult in ski boots) or wait approx 15-25 minutes for a shuttle pick up. We were a little bummed when we arrived as there were dirty dishes in the cabinet and no dishwasher detergent or parking passes left for us (a skillet had scrambled eggs crust all over it, like it used and put back without a bit of cleaning). However, after a phone call to the owner, we were stocked up with soap and parking passes. The decor is homey, and I would say everyone was plenty cozy (that new gas fireplace really cranks out the heat). The kitchen is nice and updated, yet the dishwasher did not clean as well as one should (maybe that was the reason the skillet was still dirty). The sauna was a nice bonus too if you want to warm up after a day on the slopes. And the view is as good as advertised. One of the best sunsets I've seen in West Virginia! Lastly, I would like to re-iterate how helpful the owners were throughout the process. They were quick to respond to emails, easy to pay, & on the ball with resupply when housekeeping dropped the ball. Additionally, Jim ended up finding an overcharge for our stay after we left and refunded the amount without us even knowing there was an overcharge. First rate all the way."

  • Happy Times!

"We rented the Happy Bear for the first time this past June. We were very excited to find the cabin not only beautiful but well stocked and clean. Most of my crew were fishermen and the location was perfect. I loved just relaxing & hanging out at the Happy Bear. We were also extremely thrilled to find out that AT&T cell service does pick up @ the cabin, which was the first cabin in the area we had service at. We have been renting in the Snowshoe area for the last 10 years. We are happy to have found the Happy Bear. The kitchen is well stocked for cooking. And there are plenty of beds. The 2 sided wrapped porch was so cozy to sit on in the evenings. We are already planning a Fall trip in October."
