  • Made us want to stay longer!!!

"We were there the week of August 2nd, 1014. What a great location! Just a couple steps off the water with our own private Dock. We rented a 8 HP motor from a Place in St Germain for the boat and were able to go all over the lake to fish and have fun! I caught Northern, Bass, Trout and Panfish right off the dock. Bring your fish cleaning tools! All the neighbors around the cabin were gone during the week, so we had a whole section to ourselves essentially. We brought our Kayaks and hit some of the Flowages around the area. Overall, I REALLY did not want to go home :-( It was that good!"

  • Family Reunion Heaven!

"THANKS FOR ANOTHER AMAZING VACATION! We recently completed our second year at Maxsons Point and cannot wait for next! Last year we held a family reunion here including two families who flew in from - West Coast! It was such an ideal location that everyone agreed to make it a yearly tradition. My 10yr old nephew even chose to write his 'favorite vacation' theme about Maxson's Point over a family trip to Hawaii that they had taken last summer as well! We have all ages from 3-75 and there is something for everyone to do and plenty of space to have time to yourself too. The set-up of the grounds and home are extremely well thought out and comfortable. The owner is so great to work with and bends over backward to accommodate the group and makes sure every detail is attended too. Thanks again!!!"

  • Even Better Than Advertised

"If you are looking for a true Northwoods experience look no further than Smoky Lake Lodge. This beautiful home was everything we were looking for and more. We recently spent a week here with 3 families including 6 adults and 10 children. There was plenty of sleeping room and the kids loved the spacious loft with bunk beds. The house was stocked as if the owners lived there themselves. The owner was a pleasure to deal with and was quick to respond when we had some questions while we were there. The water was crystal clear and you couldn't throw in a fishing line without pulling out a fish. We loved the fact that the home was surrounded by the beautiful forest and the privacy was unmatched. The kids especially loved the huge yard where every day at 3:30 they held a whiffle ball game. We definitely recommend this home for a family getaway. We can't wait to vacation at the lodge again next year. Thank you Neil."

  • Wonderful place for a relaxing getaway.

"We really enjoyed our time at the Bass Lake "Garatage". There is nothing like mornings, sunsets, and clear nights in the North Woods. The cabin was very clean and had everything we needed. We used the rowboat for trips around the lake to watch the loons, eagles, and other wildlife, as well as some fishing, and also did a short trip around the lake in the Kayaks. If you like swimming, the water was very warm, the sand was soft, and the raft was close enough for anyone to get to. Fishing was also good, with abundant panfish (a worm on a jig from the dock will land you a sunfish on almost every cast, and there are also bluegill, perch, and crappie), northern pike, and some really nice largemouth bass. The lake, for the most part, was fairly quiet, despite the number of cottages on the lake (two boats and jet skis were the max at one time - but usually the lake had a couple folks fishing and maybe one water-skier or rafter - at least when we were around.) Eagle River was close, as were other fun locations that would accommodate most interests. Would highly recommend it."

Eagle River Travel Tips

Eagle River Vacation Rentals in a Rural Wilderness

The Wisconsin city of Eagle River, Vilas County is in a rural wilderness area that is a great location for vacations all year-round. Eagle River lodging is accessible from major airports such as Duluth, Minnesota and Minneapolis-Saint Paul. Main roads through the area include US Highway 45, State Routes 17, 32 and 70. With Three Lakes and St. Germain, Eagle River is known as the heart of Wisconsin’s Northwoods. The link of 28 lakes is the biggest chain of freshwater lakes in the world. Its warm summers and cold, snowy winters attract visitors seeking America’s great outdoors and they find it here. Its name comes from the many bald eagles that live in the area and visitors are likely to spot this elusive bird here.

Eagle River Cabins Are Where the Firefighters Build You a Palace

Winter visitors to Eagle River vacation rentals are treated to a very special sight. Each year since about 1920, local firefighters build an ice palace, using 3,000 12-inch thick blocks of ice chiseled from the local lake. They then drag them to Eagle River to create this incredible structure which is then lit with multi-colored lights. Year after year, the structure gets bigger and has become an enormously popular attraction for locals and visitors.

The main reason that visitors come here in winter is for the excellent snowmobiling conditions. In fact, it is known as the Snowmobile Capital of the World. Enthusiasts come to ride the 500 miles of trails, known as the famous “Eagle River 500." The trails are interconnected to create an infinite network of riding opportunities through spectacular terrain in breathtaking scenery. Of course, it is not just about snowmobiling; the trails also provide great snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Visitors can also enjoy ice skating on the river, watching for local white tail deer and, naturally, trying to spot those bald eagles soaring through the blue winter skies.

Anglers will not be disappointed with a vacation to Eagle River. There are 1,327 lakes and 73 rivers and streams. This much water is bound to provide a hot area for fishing. Within the lakes and rivers are bass, trout, musky and walleye.

Make your way to Wildwood Wildlife Park at Minocque in Northwoods for a great family day. Here, children can enjoy the petting area and learn more about the local wildlife. There are also fishing, boating, kayaking and canoeing as well as hiking and biking in summer. Or head to Whisker Lake’s 33,200-acre primitive wilderness acreage where some 250 black bears and wolves are your neighbors.

Fascinating Day Trips Abound

Day trips for those staying in Eagle River cabins include George W. Brown Jr. Ojibwe Museum and Cultural Center. This is one of the best Native American museums in the Midwest and includes an exhibit of a year in the life of the Anishinabe tribe in a wonderful lakeside setting. More Native American history is available at the Oneida Nation Museum. Snowmobiling fans may want to visit the International Snowmobile Racing Hall of Fame and Museum. Learn more about Vilas County at the Northern Waters Museum. Children will enjoy the Northwoods Children’s Museum with its interactive exhibits such as the Badger Mine, where children can crawl through the "mine" in search of "gold" and "gems." Another exhibit is the Bubble Station where the kids can be encased in a real bubble! There are also workshops and family-focused events that take place all year long.
