Each year since about 1920, local firefighters build an ice palace, using 3,000 12-inch thick blocks of ice chiseled from the local lake. They then drag them to Eagle River to create this incredible structure which is then lit with multi-colored lights. The main reason that visitors come here in winter is for the excellent snowmobiling conditions. In fact, it is known as the Snowmobile Capital of the World. Of course, it is not just about snowmobiling; the trails also provide great snowshoeing and cross country skiing. Visitors can also enjoy ice skating on the river, watching for local white tail deer and, naturally, trying to spot those bald eagles soaring through the blue winter skies.

Anglers will not be disappointed with a vacation to Eagle River. There are 1,327 lakes and 73 rivers and streams. This much water is bound to provide a hot area for fishing. Within the lakes and rivers are bass, trout, musky and walleye.

Make your way to Wildwood Wildlife Park at Minocque in Northwoods for a great family day. Here, children can enjoy the petting area and learn more about the local wildlife. There are also fishing, boating, kayaking and canoeing as well as hiking and biking in summer. Or head to Whisker Lake’s 33,200-acre primitive wilderness acreage where some 250 black bears and wolves are your neighbors.

Fascinating Day Trips Abound

Day trips for those staying in Eagle River cabins include George W. Brown Jr. Ojibwe Museum and Cultural Center. This is one of the best Native American museums in the Midwest and includes an exhibit of a year in the life of the Anishinabe tribe in a wonderful lakeside setting. More Native American history is available at the Oneida Nation Museum. Snowmobiling fans may want to visit the International Snowmobile Racing Hall of Fame and Museum. Learn more about Vilas County at the Northern Waters Museum. Children will enjoy the Northwoods Children’s Museum with its interactive exhibits such as the Badger Mine, where children can crawl through the "mine" in search of "gold" and "gems." Another exhibit is the Bubble Station where the kids can be encased in a real bubble! There are also workshops and family-focused events that take place all year long.
