Madeline Island Travel Tips
Beautiful Madeline Island Vacation Rentals
Originally named "Mooningwanekaaning" (or Home of the Golden Breasted Woodpecker), Madeline Island, the largest of the Apostle Islands, is located at the northern end of Wisconsin’s Lake Superior. It is 14 miles long and just three miles wide. Getting to Madeline Island lodging is not easy but it is most definitely worth the extra effort. The island is accessible only by air or ferry. The ferry service runs from either March or April and continues until Lake Superior freezes over for the winter. During the winter, it is accessible via an ice road. The ice road is a feature of the Christmas season, when the road is lined with Christmas treas. When it is not thick enough for cars, access is by airplane, snowmobile and even wind sleds.
Spot the Eagles, Swim and Relax on an Historic Island
The area around Madeline Island cabins was settled in 1693 by French fur traders whose fort became the town of La Pointe. The history of the fur trade’s influence on the life on the island’s inhabitants is remembered at the Madeline Island Historical Museum. On the island is Big Bay State Park, also called the "Eagles Nest," for the bald eagles that build their homes in the cliffs many pine trees where a large lagoon and bog are found. Access to the island’s biggest beach is at Big Bay Town Park, where the warmer water is great for swimming. The island is a wonderful base for exploring other islands with their delightful small fishing villages still maintaining their traditional way of life. Visitors here will enjoy the peace and quiet of a small island. Come here to enjoy taking long walks through stunning woodland and discovering each of the wonderful views. You can also enjoy relaxing on the warm sandy beaches and taking the occasional swim. Take a walking tour of the historic areas of the town or a Ferry Line Bus Tour.
During the winter here, those who brave the ice roads are rewarded with a wonderland of natural snowy beauty. Here, visitors can enjoy ice skating, snowshoeing, cross country skiing, snowmobiling, ice fishing and even dog sledding.
Take a Day Trip to Baysfield
Madeline Island vacation rentals are within an easy distance for a day trip to the mainland of Wisconsin’s Bayfield. This quaint little village has unique shops where visitors can buy handblown glass and other souvenirs. Visit the Maritime Museum and have lunch at the Rittenhouse Inn, formerly one of the main houses in the village. Here, visitors can learn to kayak, charter a boat, take a fishing trip or learn to sail. Visitors can head to the "pick your own" orchard for some delicious apples and berries.
The Apostle Islands National Lakeshore was created in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy. This undisturbed wilderness area is a fabulous place to discover. There are lighthouses to tour, swimming, fishing, sailing, kayaking or hiking. Scuba diving enthusiasts may choose to head out to one of the local wrecks to do some underwater exploration.
