Strange set up
The cottage is in a fantastic area, and a stunning location so you can’t help but have a good time.
However we were not 100% comfortable there. It is more than tired, and the whole place is screaming out for a deep clean - a basic clean would be nice.
The other thing that is not mentioned in any part of this advert is that the gardens, garage and shed are shared with the cottage next door. We arrived late and woke up the next day to find the garage door open and a strange man walking about, playing with his dog. Once we contacted the agent we were told he lived on the property and looked after the house. We feel this is something that should have been mentioned in the advert, that someone lives on site, and shares the facilities. Even if we were ok with this set up, it would have been alarming for anyone as we had no clue when we booked.
Despite seeing him daily he never came to introduce himself and we felt extremely uncomfortable to discover he had let himself in while we were out to unlock the padlocked electricity cupboard in one of the bedrooms. We know this because we had tried, without success, to open the lock the previous night, as the code in the guest information book was wrong. If we had known this was the set up we would never have booked this cottage, but this site failed to mention any of it.
Not clean enough
The cottage is great, but unfortunately not clean enough to make one really comfortable. Also on the day we arrived the boiler did not work so we had no heating or hot water to shower. Also there was a problem with the drain in one of the showers. The house is nice, location is good but could be much better if it was cleaner.
Nice place to stay from where we made nice trips. Arboretum. Royal botanical gardens. Old church in Kilnun and so on.
If you are coming via Loch Lomond and The Trossachs take the left turn to Kilmun off the A815, south of Loch Eck and just before you get to Sandbank and the Holy Loch.
If you are using the ferry from Gourock, turn right at Hunter's Quay, and drive along the edge of the loch and past the Holy Loch Marina.
Turn right again at the T junction and along the loch through Sandbank. Soon, on your right you will pass a petrol station/shop/diner and just past that is the turning to your right for Kilmun.
Hollytrees is about the 6th property on the left along that road.
