December is almost here, and with it rain and wonderful snow in the higher elevations. The ski park is ramping up to open on the 14th and snowshoeing and back country skiing are already possible. After your outdoor activities, there is a warm cottage with a wood stove and down comforters on the beds to return to.
Butterfly Cottage is a charming and unique property, one that will take you back in time, but with the advantages of 21st century amenities. A beautiful clawfoot bathtub, shiplap walls and sturdy antique furniture exist side by side with a mini-split heater/ac, all new electric and plumbing and a modern (but very tasteful) kitchen. The home is small, but with an open floor plan. White paint throughout and tall windows flood the cottage with light. The two bedrooms have french doors between them which can be left open if there are fewer guests, or to keep an eye on small children. The larger bedroom, with a queen size memory foam bed, has 11 foot ceilings. The smaller bedroom has a cast iron double bed. A very comfortable sofa/sleeper is a recent addition to the living room, making a great bed for two when needed. The bathroom, once the back porch, has loads of charm, plus a new tiled shower.
The Sacramento River is across the street, with nearby fishing at "the wall" just downstream. Upriver and two long blocks north is the Amtrak station, making a whistle stop vacation easy for those wanting to leave their cars at home. There is much to do and see within walking distance (one mile) of the cottage. Restaurants/bars, a pub/craft brewery, galleries, an amazing swimming pool, and the city botanical gardens, all make staying in Dunsmuir a fun experience. Venturing out of town will take you to many swimming holes on the Upper Sac suitable for swimming, inner tubing or reading on the beach. World-class fishing, of course, is at your doorstep. The McCloud River and Reservior, Lake Siskiyou and Castle Lake are all within an easy distance. The Pacific Crest Trail is only 5 miles to the south, with other trails and forest service roads nearby. The list is long... Once you visit this unpretentious area, you will likely come back.
Two year's ago this property was an eyesore on our block, which is full of charming, well-maintained cottages. The landscaping is coming along, with lots of spots outside to relax. We just re-did the perimeter fences and have a new, big gate in the driveway, adding to the privacy of the backyard. A new deck just went in as well as new plantings. More outdoor amenities will be added as time goes on; Butterfly Cottage is a work in progress. I hope your first visit will turn you into a regular guest!
