About Carolyn Carl
I was born and raised in the Bay Area, but my heart has always been in these mountains. My great grandfather and his family were immigrants from London who settled in Redding. They discovered the cooler summers and joys of fly fishing the river in the late 1890's. I have spent summers in the river, hiking/backpacking and just enjoying life. I learned to ski on Mt. Shasta, and now also enjoy cross country skiing and snowshoeing. I recently moved up to the area, but still work as a professional musician in the Bay Area.
Carolyn Carl purchased this Cottage in 2016
Why Carolyn Carl chose Dunsmuir
I love restoring old homes, and wanted to own something I could bring back to life. Originally described as a 1930's house, we soon discovered newspapers dating to 1895 that proved otherwise. It has been a labor of love, with lots of decisions to make along the way. A new wood stove went in last fall, and the exterior is coming along. The perennial garden in the front yard is growing nicely and the new exterior fences/driveway gate have opened up the backyard.
What makes this Cottage unique
I am hoping that some brave souls will see the benefits of an old fashioned whistle stop vacation. The train stopped in my mother's era all along the canyon. Benny Goodman and many others used to play downriver at Crag View Resort, with visitors staying in cabins near the river. Leaving your car behind as an experiment could make you view vacations in a totally different light. The Coast Starlight gets in at the Dunsmuir train station around 5 am going north, and arrives/departs just after midnight heading south. My cottage is an easy walk from the station. And just a little side note, legend has it that BB King used to play in town and walk over the bridge to Butterfly to spend the night. No proof, but plausible:)

Great little house in Dunsmuir!
Our family has stayed at Butterfly Cottage twice, and we have thoroughly enjoyed each experience. Perfect location for fishing. Sheets are clean, and contact with owner is prompt. Easy check-in/out. It is dog friendly, though we are not current dog owners. Kitchen has everything needed for a comfortable stay. Thank you!
Beautiful kitchen, lovely home.
Wonderful little cottage
Everything was clean and easy. We had a great stay!
Great location for fishing, hiking or biking!
Carolyn had a lovely fully appointed cottage in a fantastic location. Great communication and a very helpful guide to the area. Five stars!
Fishing in June
June is the right time to fish the Upper Sac. We stayed for a second time at the Butterfly Cottage and had a great time. The owner continues to improve things and there is now a back deck so if you like being outside, you now have two places with different sun exposures to chose from when you are relaxing.
Charm and convenience galore!
This was a surprisingly special place to stay on a long move location road trip! Quiet, cozy and had everything we needed and more. Would not hesitate to recommend and would love to come back
The Siskiyou area offers 4 seasons of outdoor activities. Fishing on the upper Sacramento River is very popular, as well as the surrounding creeks and lakes. There are many wonderful swimming holes to enjoy, as well as the fun of inner tubing, swimming or kayaking. Mt. Shasta Ski Park offers a great experience for skiers and snow boarders of all levels. It is a very fun and friendly place to enjoy, with breathtaking views of the mountain and surrounding area. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses Interstate 5 a few miles to the south, making day hikes or longer very accessible. The trail crosses through the Castle Crags, the granite heart of an ancient volcano. Hiking, rock climbing and exploring this formation are popular activities. Golfers will be very happy with a choice of at least 3 resorts in the surrounding area. The towns of Dunsmuir, Mt. Shasta and Weed all give visitors lots of options for dining, movies and other activities.
