The perfect Paris retreat!
My family of 6 stayed at the Hill House for 3 wonderful nights. Our group was made up of 3 young adults in their 20s, a 17 year old, and my husband and I. There was room for us all to sleep comfortably. It was an easy commute into Paris, where we spent most of our time. We wished we had stayed longer as we didn’t really feel that we had time to take full advantage of the features of the home and the surroundings.
The pictures of the hill house are accurate. It is so incredibly charming, and thoughtfully decorated. We kept noticing new little interesting touches. The gardens are lovely, and private. It felt a bit like being in a cabin in the forest. And, just a few blocks away, there is a wonderful walkway along the Seine!
What made the home stand out even more in our minds though, was the amazing host, Aubry! From our first communications, he thoroughly answered my questions and when we arrived...wow! He greeted us and gave us a tour of the property as well as taking time to give us recommendations on where to find a dinner on a late Sunday evening. Then, he came back up a few minutes later with a basket of goodies in case we didn’t find an open grocery. It was so welcoming and kind!
We had two families with a total of 9 people staying there comfortably including the tea house. This place is very charming. It has a small but functional kitchen. The outdoor shower is lovely. It is at the bottom of a very long hill so pack lightly. The food is at the top of the hill on either side so plan food ahead. You don’t want to walk up the hill twice!! Restaurants don’t open until 7. Make reservations in this town. Our host was very gracious and helpful.
Lisa and Lowa are right. Thank you both for your helpful comments. Indeed, the house is at the bottom of the hill, very close to the Seine. (Presentation also on thehillhouse.fr).
The 2 nearest center villages (Herblay sur Seine and La Frette Sur Seine) are at the top of the hill: 1 kilometer from the house, but you have to climb to reach it (of course easier to come back to the house).
Each village or city also has a station for the direct train to Paris center (about 18 minutes). Many tenants like to come by public transport, loving to be rid of the constraints of the car. Everything is doable without a car. But if you have very small children (with stroller...), obviously, it is more comfortable to have a car.
By the way, indeed, the kitchen of the self catering (95m2) is small, with all the necessary to cook. But not to make great gourmet meals.
However: Some people decide to rent the entire house 240m2 can accommodate until 16 people, or just to have maximum comfort to enjoy a second much larger kitchen, diner room...
At The Hill House the mind is not avant garde or hyper modern but more turned towards nature, calm, and perhaps take time quietly.
Very nice home.
My family had a great time and we enjoyed our stay. Very nice home!
Jiamin Li and family are very nice people! It was a real pleasure to welcome them at the house, for their holidays and tourism in central Paris and around. Thanks!
Perfect Outside of Paris Retreat
You won'r find a better host than Audrey. Very willing to help in any way to make sure our stay was as good as possible. The house is tucked away in the hills and surrounded by lush vegetation. It is located right along the river Seine which has a beautiful walkway. We booked both places with a party of six. The home is very eclectic. Not your usual hotel or plain Paris apartment. The outdoors shower was a unique experience coming from California. If you are looking for a place outside the hustle and bustle of Paris, then this place is a great option. About 20 min train ride to reach Paris and then Metro or walking from there to reach other destinations. Its about a 50 min car ride from Charles de Gaulle airport, so I would book transportation ahead of time.
At home, there have been several times vacationers from California. Every time for a big trip to Europe. Like Bill, people who seem to have a great travel experience, with a lot of good humor. Everything seems fluid and easy with them. It's really a pleasure to welcome Californians like Bill! We would almost want to go on a trip with them, to rediscover Europe.
Warm and welcoming
We have just spent a wondeful Christmas week in this warm and welcoming home. We felt right at home right from the start as we were greeted by Aubry, the owner, and shown around this very interesting, eclectic hide away. We were a family of 7, with three kids and two grandparents, and Aubry had made sure we were all accommodated and had even put out some Christmas decorations to add to the warm atmoshere.
Leading up to our stay we had very good, prompt communication with Aubry who happily answered all our questions and sent all relevant information for our arrival.
We loved our week staying here, going to the village in the morning to pick up something for breakfast from the local boulangerie and enjoying walks along the river. We had two days in Paris, which was very accessible on the train, although you could walk, we parked at Herblay station as we would be back quite late. We also enjoyed a day at Versailles which was well worth the visit. The location is very convenient for day trips and makes a great base for a family break. We all came away feeling like we had had a real escape, enjoying the eclectic decor and natural surroundings.
We hope to make a return visit one day and would love to see the area in the Summer next time.
Many thanks for a wonderful week.
Thanks to Vanessa. A great pleasure of welcoming her with her family. Much elegance, kindness ... with the english knowing how to live legendary and very real. Sincerely.
You have to stay at this property! It's fun upon entering the door. Our family of 5 spent several nights in this treehouse, a sort of nouveau Swiss Family Robinson style with interesting decor and antiquities, hide-and-go-seek lighting and comfortable greenery all around. This is a great experience for families with kids in the 8+ range. The riverfront is a very short walk and is starkly different than the busy Seine of Paris, good for a very quiet and peaceful stroll. Despite its remote village feel, it is a quick and easy 20 minute train ride to central Paris. Just as delightful as the house is the host. Aubry went out of his way to meet us at the house and show us around, and was very available for questions and suggestions.
Come prepared to walk as the house is on a steep hillside and the villages and train station are uphill. Also recommend not packing a lot of luggage, or if you do simply park on the water front (easy parking) and walk to the house rather than drive the narrow road. Herblay doesn't have a lot (La Frette sur Seine even less) but there's a small market and a great boulangerie. If you want to eat at the creperie make reservations!
This house was a highlight of a month long trip, not something I'd typically say about accommodations! We'll definitely look for an opportunity to return.
Jon, Shira and their children are a really very nice family. The 3 children are so very charming. You can feel it immediately, from the first moment you meet them. And everything becomes a great pleasure to welcome them and to take steps to improve their home comfort. A big thank you to them, and welcome next time with pleasure. Sincerely. Aubry
18 minutes from Paris. In the heart of the region impressionist painters (Auvers sur Oise very close). Many castles with parks and gardens nearby, including Versailles, but also Maisons Laffitte, St Germain en Laye ... Thoiry. Just in front of the beautiful forest of St Germain en laye. At the edge of the Seine
