Not recommended

  • 2 of 5

I only gave this apartment two stars because they didn't give enough information on the properties. In the apartment we rented they only had a hot plate to cook on, I found this very inconvenient. If you don't plan on cooking it is a good place for you, or they have other apartments with more options. Make sure you ask a lot of questions before renting. No air conditioning, so if you are going in the hotter season, not recommended. One good thing about the property is it is in a central area, for all the tourist attractions, you will have to travel aways to buy groceries.

Owner's Response: It is unfortunate that you were not happy with the kitchen. The cooking facility is described on the webpage. You might not have read all the details. Had you brought this up while staying with us we could have discussed a 1-bedroom apartment. Hope you will try us again on a future visit. Rich and Kathy Pennington

Nice getaway in real Maui

  • 4 of 5

First, we really like the N coast and upcountry area of Maui. This area of Maui is very local, laid back, and authentic. It beats the overdeveloped and sterile resort strip on NW end of W Maui, and also is far superior to the endless banks of 70's & 80's beach condos in Kihei.

Second, we enjoyed our stay in the Pu'u Koa studio apartment (#3) in a residential neighborhood just a few minutes from Haiku and Paia. It was clean, had everything we needed (except a functional wine opener, so we bought a new one and left it)! The 2 buildings that contain the 6 units of Pu'u Koa were

VERY quiet, with a nice ramada in the common area. The property is set back; tucked in behind most of the houses on the street, which increased the privacy and quiet. The small lanai/decks on the back had good sunset and peek-a-boo ocean views and were nice at night, although warm in the afternoon. The front lanai/decks were less private, but cooler. Unfortunately, the single chair on ours was shot, with the fabric completely torn.

Our friends stayed in the matching studio (#6) in the adjacent building and also enjoyed theirs. Our only gripes were minor:

#3 has a window over the bed that overlooks the parking lot. Since there are flood lights in the parking lot and no blinds on the windows, the room never gets dark. Blinds would definitely help! Also, since the parking lot is gravel, you definitely know when anybody comes or goes.

#6 shower control valve is not lined up in the middle, so you never get a warm shower. Or maybe it was low volume?

The beds in both units are pretty hard...

Anyway, we would still recommend it. Aloha!

great vacation with this guys

  • 5 of 5

We spent two weeks on Maui staying at this place and I absolutely love it. My main point for this trip was surfing and windsurfing ,so I've been out all day. At the end of the day it was nice to go back to this quiet neighborhood. The place itself isn't fancy but had everything we needed wi fi, TV, small kitchen, laundry etc. I like the location of this place, it is five minutes to drive to Hookipa beach and about ten minutes to Paia (nice town) where you can find all kinds of shops and places to eat. I think this place well worth the money spent.

Perfect location for exploring the island

  • 5 of 5

My friend and I stayed one week at Puukoa and it had everything we needed. We spent very little time in the room and never even turned the TV on! The bathroom is huge and had two sinks and the rest of the room was very spacious. The bed was very comfortable and there are two balconies to enjoy. Kathy responded quickly to my inquiries through email as well. The location is perfect, right off of Hana highway and less than 10 minutes from Paia town and Hookipa beach. It's a great central location to explore the island. I'd say 45mins to 1 hour (or less) day trips to most locations. We went to Haleakala to see the sunrise, Napilli Bay, Kaanapali beach, Hana, Waianapana, Makena and more! So you will definitely need a car. There is so much to see and do on this beautiful island. I plan to come back and would definitely rent from Kathy and Rich again. Mahalo!

Breezy and delightful!

  • 5 of 5

The price, the location and the space was perfect for my son and I on this last trip to Maui. We were able to cook meals when we wanted and felt comfortable with the drive to the beach and restaurants and anyplace else on the island!~ We had privacy and it was quiet for the most part. You could smell the flowers coming in with the breeze and there are lilikoi in the back. It does get hot up top, but when you open the windows the breeze fills the room and cools everything down. Our hosts were great and I couldn't be happier with the trip! Mahalo!!
