Historic Cottage on Champagne Pond. Swim with the Sea Turtles!

Bedrooms 2
Space 900 sq ft
Property type house
Minimum Stay 4 nights

About the property

2 bedroom, 1 bath beach cottage, sleeps 4 guests. Full kitchen, Wifi, all the essentials.

Champagne Pond is a large, geothermally heated lagoon that averages about 90 degrees and is a favorite hangout of colorful reef fish and green sea turtles. Champagne Pond Cottage is a Hawaiian beach cottage that is one of only 6 homes that front Champagne Pond. Walk out to the lanai, climb the ladder into the crystal-clear cove front of the cottage, and swim with the turtles into the large body of Champagne Pond and Kapoho Bay just beyond.

When you're not enjoying the warm, relaxing waters you'll love basking in the sun on your own private mini-white sand beach! The property owners have constructed an elevated, sandy area that overlooks the water. It's the only one of its kind in Kapoho!

Champagne Pond Cottage has a lot of history. This charming two-bedroom cottage was built in 1957 by James and Mildred Kuwana. It survived the 1960 lava flow that covered Kapoho. Mr. Kuwana and another long-time resident had the lava flow dredged to create what is known today as Champagne Pond. The home was refurbished in 1994 and just recently upgraded with a new kitchen and bath, complete with granite counter tops and beautiful windows.

The roomy kitchen is well equipped with refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave, coffeemaker, toaster, blender, rice cooker, pots and pans, cutlery, and dishes. The kitchen has no conventional oven but you won't miss one, especially with a charcoal BBQ on the lanai. Windows surround the kitchen on three sides to bring in the view.

Ohia wood floors grace the living area, which has comfortable seating, a flat-screen satellite TV with a many channels including CD-quality commercial-free music stations, and a DVD player. There's a picnic table on the shady lanai, and a small dining table just off the kitchen, so you can eat in or out.

The master bedroom has a queen bed and the second bedroom has bunk beds. The bedrooms are small but work well for a family. The cottage has a strict maximum of 4 people on the property at any time due to the small septic system.

Champagne Pond Cottage offers a glimpse into an old Hawaii home, with upgraded features and a location you will never forget!

average to above average condition, but as always stellar location!

Thanks for allowing us to review this property. This is our third stay here (and we have owned vacation rentals in Kapoho so have a pretty good perspective. Normally we give this home a stellar rating. This time however, lots of things seemed in disrepair. 1) washer that locked our clothes in each load. hours spent online trying to solve the problem--eventually we took our moldy clothes with us in our suitcases. Microwave--when seemingly finished, you open door and it turns on again WITH DOOR OPEN in your face. Not safe. Seems kitchen not as well stocked for cooking as in years past, harder to cook and feed family of four easily. Recommend additional movable fans as back room hot. Like the new tv but it is hard to work and connect computers and other devices (we are pretty experienced) Probably time for new bed and bedding in the master.

Thanks again, we love this location and hope we can return again--and recommend again to friends as we have referred three different groups in the past. Let us know when fixes happen!

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed there from 3/22/2018 thru 3/27 and had a wonderful time. Swimming and snorkeling in the heated volcanic pond were awesome. For better snorkeling experience, the tide pools are only a mile away. The house does not have air conditioning but has fans to keep it cool throughout the day. It's roomy and comfortable for a family of 4. The neighborhood is nice and quiet. You'll feel very safe there. Overall we had a wonderful experience with our stay at Champagne Pond.

Great spot!

  • 3 of 5

Beautiful views. Great to be on the ocean. The humidity takes a bit to get used to, a dehumidifer or AC would help. Found 4 large cockroaches inside- a bit freaky. Small mouse we had to block up his hole. All in all nice visit for our family.

Owner's Response: Aloha Jeff, Mahalo nui for your review! We're so glad that you enjoyed your stay. While we do have all of our vacation rentals professionally treated for pests on a regular basis, it's a never-ending battle here in the tropics!! We do our very best to keep them outside where they belong ;-) Take care, and please keep us in mind for future visits. Warmest Aloha The Team at Hawaii Holiday Vacation Rentals

Right next to the Champagne Ponds, lovely water, very warm and really close / swimmable location to the open ocean if that is what you want! Enough said, I highly recommend this place and look forward to staying again sometime!

So relaxing!

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 3 and this cottage was the perfect amount of space for us. It was so much fun to swim in the beautiful ocean outside your back door. The geothermal "pools" are just spectacular! Bring your own snorkel gear. We were in the water everyday checking out all the beautiful fish. Many people pay good money to get a snorkeling trip like the one in your own backyard. We saw tons of beautiful fish everyday and even swam beside 2 Sea Turtles! It was truly spectacular! House was well stocked with towels and everything that was needed. The master bedroom is very small and the bed not too comfy. But the second room of 2 bunks (4 beds) was great. If you are a family of 4 or 5 this is still plenty of space. It's a cute funky beach cottage and we LOVED every second. If you are not big on lizards and geckos you may be a little squeamish! However, we LOVED seeing all the geckos outside and in the house. There was one in particular that must live behind the cupboards in the kitchen. Numerous times we gently removed it from the house and every time it wound up back inside. My 7 year old daughter just adored catching and releasing geckos. It was hours of entertainment. Lots of crabs down in the "pool" too. She loved seeing them and we did catch one baby one while there to check out and release. The crabs are really quick. They don't like humans and move out of sight when you get near. So again nothing to worry about if your not a big animal lover like we are.

The only negative was that along side of this property is the public access route. So there is a constant stream of people walking alongside your property to access the pools as well. We stayed Monday through Thursday which I'd consider the slow part of the week and there was still a steady flow of people each day. So it wasn't really as private as I would've liked but guess that's the price you pay to be somewhere as gorgeous as this. Others want to see it too :) We'll be back! Mahalo!

Kapoho is a quiet community on the eastern tip of the island. It’s often referred to as “Sunny Kapoho” as it sees only about a third of the rain that falls in Hilo. This neighborhood offers easy access to the water and some of the best snorkeling in the state. The gated Kapoho Beach Lots community features access to Champagne Pond - a large lagoon that is geothermally heated to a luxurious 90+ degrees. Just to the south, Kapoho Vacationland is home to the Wai Opae Tidepools, a protected marine sanctuary filled with tropical fish, coral gardens, and all manner of spectacular sea life.

You’ll have a blast exploring along the Red Road – one of the most beautiful drives you’ll ever take. Heading south from Kapoho you’ll find Ahalanui Park, aka Millionaires Pond, a park with a lagoon at the ocean’s edge that is almost Jacuzzi temperature. 5 minutes past there is Isaac Hale Park at Pohoiki Bay the local hot spot for surfing and boogie boarding, and is home to the boat ramp that the lava viewing boats use. Kehena Black Sand Beach is a 15 minute drive. The Kalapana lava viewing area (Pele willing) is 25 minutes away at the end of the Red Road.

Eclectic Pahoa Town is 9 miles from Kapoho, with yummy restaurants, fun shopping , and necessities like convenience and grocery stores, banks, gas, etc. Historic Hilo is 45 minutes from Kapoho, and Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is about an hour.
