About PHIL DENNIS

I was very lucky to be born in Broadstairs and I have lived here all my life.

Barnaby's Lodge was one of the first houses to be built in this lovely town.

I am a retired builder and have lovingly restored this unique cottage to it's former glory.

I now manage The Fishermen's Cottages and have been in the hospitality trade for over 20 years now. I fell in love with this cottage when I was renovating it and I now have great pleasure in managing this one and two others that are on this web site.

I really enjoy in making sure that all of our customers have a great stay, with 5 star customer care!

If you want to know the best restaurants, pubs or beaches to visit then just let me know and I'll be happy to assist. I'm always here to help!

I have understood what everyone is looking for and number one is cleanliness which is at the top of our list.

We will work hard to ensure that your stay here in Broadstairs is both comfortable and enjoyable so hopefully you'll want to return again!

Why PHIL DENNIS chose Broadstairs

Steeped in history this cottage was built in 1680 and was used by the smugglers, there is still the secret door in the lounge that they used to escape from the custom officers. Parts of this cottage are built out of chalk blocks carved out of the local cliffs with flint and old oak ships timbers, really anything they could find on the beach.

This is the best location to stay in Broadstairs, tucked away in a little courtyard yet so close to the beaches, shops and restaurants which are all only a minutes' walk away. Plus what a great place with all it's charm and character of a Fisherman's hide away, how could you not resist coming to stay.

What makes this cottage unique

It's such a cosy cottage steeped in history, you can not help falling in love with it.There is a small secure sunny garden with a patio table and chairs where you can sit out and have your breakfast or a glass of wine.

Everything is on your doorstep and there is no need to use your car, just park up on the Eastern Esplanade for free and enjoy the history and beauty of this wonderful old town.

Being right on the tip of the South East of England, we have our own little micro-climate here producing some of the best weather in the UK, with temperatures reaching up to 30 degrees.

You will be guaranteed a warm and friendly welcome whenever you come to Broadstairs. The town is steeped in history and charm and has been captivating visitors for generations.Barnaby's Lodge is a fantastic base from which to explore everything the town and surrounding area has to offer.

A lovely little cottage

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is very well located a few steps from the beach and in the centre of town. It was a little difficult to find at first as it wasn’t clear from the directions that you need to walk down the side of The Old Curiosity Shop. The cottage is on the small side but perfect for a short break and it has everything you need. It has lots of character and the back yard is a good size. I would have preferred a hook for the shower rather than having to hold it but the water was hot and there was plenty of pressure. The beds were very comfortable. Overall we really enjoyed our stay.

Owner's Response: Dear Jessica. Thank you so much for your review and I am so pleased that you enjoyed your stay. We are in the process of re designing the bathroom, so that you will be able to stand up and have a shower and if preferred a bath. As for the bed, we have just changed the mattress for a memory foam and I am so pleased you found it comfortable. Hope to see you again! Kind regards. Phil.

Great location but cottage amenities too basic.

  • 3 of 5

Great location.. but very basic amenities in the cottage. No welcome /information pack , not even a Tea bag to get us started. Stained /dirty towels and areas of the kitchen work surface were filthy. Photos on the site were taken in a way that enhanced the property unrealistically , the cottage living area was smaller than expected and no decent area for 4 people to eat a meal as the 4th bar stool was under worktop that houses the microwave. We ate out for every meal which wasn't what we had hoped for.

The saving grace was the great central location.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much for taking the time to write a review. The welcome pack you mentioned would have been sent to you with all the details prior to your visit. I am extremely disappointed that you were unhappy with the cleanliness in certain areas of the cottage as we really pride ourselves in our attention to detail and customer satisfaction and 9 times out of 10 we receive excellent reviews. The fishermen's cottage is advertised as a cottage and is over 400 years old and what it may lack in space it makes up for in charm and character.

Negatives included stained bed linen and we felt that the cottage would have benifited fro a deep clean

Host Phil was helpful when required.

Owner's Response: Dear Trudi. Thank you for your feedback. I do apologize that there was a stain on the bed linen and we have now replaced it. It is our policy that if there is any damage to linen etc. it is replaced and on this occasion it had slipped the net. Kind regards. Phil.

Delightful stay at Barnaby's Lodge in Broadstairs

  • 5 of 5

Full of character, cute 2-bed cottage in a fantastic position very close to Viking Bay and the High Street. Very clean and had everything we needed. The outside courtyard was perfect for breakfast and we were blessed with wonderful weather all weekend. Nice and hot water for the end of evening bath to soak the weary bodies after all the coastal walking. Phil was in contact before and during our stay asking if everything was okay and we had no problems whatsoever. I love history and that the cottage was so old and sat there trying to imagine life as a fisherman (or a smuggler!) in the 17th century. If ever visiting the area again, would have no hesitation in booking Barnaby's Lodge.
