About Midge

My husband Tom and I bought the farm in 2000 as a getaway from Richmond, we loved this area so much we sold our home in Richmond and moved to the farm full time in 2001. We lived in the original farm cottage that dates back to the Civil War, which is now Shade Tree Cottage. The Little House was once my office and then a storage shed after we built another home on the farm just down the hill. We had Tennessee Walking Horses, Jack Russell dogs and a donkey when the farm was active. Now the horses are gone and we only have 1 Jack Russell left, but now we have 54 hens that provide us and the Cottages with fresh free range eggs. We have enjoyed having guests in the Cottages and we try to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable. Thanks for visiting The Little House at Shade Tree Cottage. Midge and Tom Dreelin

Why Midge chose Gordonsville

If you love nature and especially birds, you will love sitting on the screened porch. The bird feeders are always full and birds are always visiting. In the early evening you may see deer grazing in the pasture or Canadian geese on a fly by.

What makes this cottage unique

You are close to lots of historic attractions, restaurants and wineries, but you will feel like you're in the middle of the country. Even though we usually have a nice breeze in the summer, sometimes a little A/C is appreciated. We have a wonderful central heating and AC system in the Little House for your comfort.

Adorable tiny home in a fun area!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the "Little House"! Everything was cute and comfortable and the hosts were welcoming and knowledgeable. It was a little too cold while we were there to spend much time outside, but the deck and fire pit looked like they would be great for those visiting while the weather's better. In terms of food, the kitchenette doesn't allow for cooking so we went to BBQ Exchange down the road (per our host's recommendation) and it lived up to the hype--truly delicious, and so close to the home! I would highly recommend the "Little House" to any couple looking for an escape from the city!

Beautiful cottage for a couple and their dog

  • 5 of 5

This was a fantastic little cottage, perfect for a couple and their pet. We stayed at The Little House for 5 nights and were very comfortable. The unit was very clean and well maintained. The screened in porch with rocking chairs was a perfect place to have coffee in the morning or have a glass of some of Virginia's amazing wines in the evening. The field it overlooks is very pretty and very peaceful and has several bird feeders to attract some cardinals, humming birds, and finches. My wife and I (and our dog) are already looking forward to our next visit. Some suggestions: bring a flash light as it will get very dark at night and bring some bug spray (bee spray) as you may be greeted by some hornets on occasion (don't worry, the screened in porch will keep these guys out of the house).

Owner's Response: Paul and Joy, thank you for the lovely review. I really appreciate it. I'm so sorry about those carpenter bees! I saw that you left me a few goodies, matches, bee spray, trash bags, etc. Thank you so much. I think I've got them under control now. Hope you can come back again. Midge

Peaceful and enchanting. Such a lovely property!

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time. We only met Midge briefly, but she was very easy to get in touch with and made sure our stay was perfect. The "little house" was exactly how it was described. It was clean and cozy, everything we were looking for in a place to stay while enjoyed the mountains nearby. We will definitely be coming back!

Exactly as described - small but perfectly thought out and very comfortable, very private

  • 5 of 5

There was nothing more we wanted or needed from the Little House. All the necessities, tons of charm. The screened front porch was a real plus for us "city dwellers" to look out and just see green! Everything worked and they were very accommodating on our arrival time. We would highly recommend.

Thank you!

Midge was fantastic and the cottage was better than advertised. Definitely worth every penny. Great location, peaceful and lovely. Plus bonus eggs from her chickens and multiple bunny and hummingbird sightings. Lovely.

Tranquil and cosy

  • 4 of 5

Cosy, beautifully decorated. Bird feeders and rockers on the porch overlooking a former horse pasture made for a tranquil get away. Friendly and hospitable owner made us feel right at home.
