About Midge

My husband Tom and I bought the farm in 2000 as a getaway from Richmond, we loved this area so much we sold our home in Richmond and moved to the farm full time in 2001. We lived in the original farm cottage that dates back to the Civil War, which is now Shade Tree Cottage. The Little House was once my office and then a storage shed after we built another home on the farm just down the hill. We had Tennessee Walking Horses, Jack Russell dogs and a donkey when the farm was active. Now the horses are gone and we only have 1 Jack Russell left, but now we have 54 hens that provide us and the Cottages with fresh free range eggs. We have enjoyed having guests in the Cottages and we try to make your stay pleasant and enjoyable. Thanks for visiting The Little House at Shade Tree Cottage. Midge and Tom Dreelin

Why Midge chose Gordonsville

If you love nature and especially birds, you will love sitting on the screened porch. The bird feeders are always full and birds are always visiting. In the early evening you may see deer grazing in the pasture or Canadian geese on a fly by.

What makes this cottage unique

You are close to lots of historic attractions, restaurants and wineries, but you will feel like you're in the middle of the country. Even though we usually have a nice breeze in the summer, sometimes a little A/C is appreciated. We have a wonderful central heating and AC system in the Little House for your comfort.

An amazing little cottage in a great little town

  • 5 of 5

This is the our second stay at the "Little House" and all I can say is that we can't wait for our third stay. The house is the perfect place for a couple (or a couple and their pet) to stay at for a get away. Midge is fantastic and does an amazing job of maintaining this house and making you feel at home from the moment you walk in the door. This is also our second trip to Gordonsville (we typically spend time in Charlottesville) and we love it. It is a little more quiet than Charlottesville, but more importantly is very close to some of our favorite vineyards :). There is also a really nice café in town and of course BBQ exchange is right down the road (how can you say no to that). We're looking forward to our next visit.

The Little House - bigger on the inside than the outside.

  • 5 of 5

The Little House met and exceeded our expectations.Absolutely perfect for two people, the screened-in front porch was a true game changer - sitting out on it while enjoying some coffee in the morning or more adult beverages throughout the day.

Quiet, little traffic going by and the sense of seclusion is very strong even with the Shady Tree nearby. The cottage is oriented in such a way that you never see anything else except the field and woods outside your door. Midge is a fantastic host, delivered more quality than one expected.

We plan on going back again, was a fantastic time.

Cozy, very clean and adorable cottage.

  • 5 of 5

We stayed two nights at the Little House. It is very clean and bright. We loved the screened-in porch with rocking chairs that looks out over a field. Very close to Monticello which is why we stayed there. They have corn-hole which we played. Very nice area with many vineyards. Owners have bird feeders outside of porch which are visited by many goldfinch. The cottage has a nice kitchenette area and is well equipped with microwave and Keurig.

We loved this little house! It has every amenity you could ask for in a weekend getaway. We loved playing corn hole and sitting on the screened in porch, just enjoying nature and the night time sounds.

Clean, tidy, and sweet.

A small, but well appointed, cottage with a very good air conditioner, great bed, absolutely spotless bathroom, and room for our pooches to run and frolic. I have some issues sleeping on too hard/too soft beds, but this one was firm enough for my back, while being soft enough for my joints. I woke up rested and not stiff in the least. Almost nothing wrong in this "little house," but don't expect to cook, as there is only a microwave & toaster. The only down side is the small water heater, which does not last through a "lady's" shower. If you've got thick hair and want to wash and condition, do it quickly, because the water begins to cool down soon enough. I've got rather thin hair, and the water was turning luke warm by the time I was done. There are still big bees on the porch, but I sat out there with my dogs and they don't bother at all. They're just more interested in trying to get out through the screen! The location is wonderful -- out of the way of all the tourist clutter, but close enough to get anywhere with no trouble. Very private and cozy. My daughter and I were traveling North to our home in PA after spending some time in FL. Since she has a few months free before entering a MA program, we thought it would be great to meander through VA on a quest for early American History. We were not disappointed, and really enjoyed our stay at the little house.
