Overview

About the property

Stares Nest - sleeps 5 guests in 2 bedrooms

This amazing cottage has been in the owner, Jane's family for many years, and as her and her partner Stuart are architects it's been sensitively restored to a very high standard. It really is the quintessential Dartmoor cottage, combining the cosiness of low ceilings and a wood burning stove with great modern features such as the fabulous new bathrooms with limestone floors, heated towel rails and underfloor heating. It's the kind of cottage you won't want to leave at the end of your holiday! The ground floor has stone floors throughout.

The kitchen/breakfast room, with newly installed French windows onto the garden, has a Rayburn, electric cooker, microwave, fridge, washing machine & dishwasher. The sitting/dining room has an inglenook fireplace with a wood burning stove plus electric heating, rugs and comfortable furniture. A new extension reached from the sitting room has a downstairs loo and a utility room.

Upstairs the master bedroom is ensuite. It also has a door out to an inglenook overlooking the garden (see photos). The second bedroom has a double and a single bed with a separate shower room. The newly fitted bathrooms have limestone floors with underfloor heating and heated towel rails.

OutsideThere is private parking for one car and additional parking close by in the village. You go through a white gate to reach the south facing slate courtyard. The courtyard has a table and chairs looks over the mature gardens with a stream and ponds. These make the garden unsuitable for children under 5. The gardens are quite extensive and include a separate lawned area reached down a path which runs alongside the church yard and the aforementioned inglenook, accessed from the master bedroom or the garden.

Facilities and servicesFree Wi-fi, TV, Blue Ray DVD player. Use of landline for local calls. Use of the oil-fired Rayburn is included.

Things to do nearbyThere are great walks (or runs) from the door as the Two Moors Way passes nearby. But the area also offers great fishing, horse riding, canoeing, cycling and mountain biking. The nearby river Dart also has some great swimming and picnic spots. See Holne Pool on the wild swimming website. The old Stannary town of Ashburton is a short drive. This has a great selection of high quality restaurants, pubs cafes and shops. In the summer it has an excellent outdoor heated swimming pool. The town is particularly known for its antique shops but also has some excellent shops, delis, cafes and restaurants

Beautiful property in a stunning location!

  • 5 of 5

This refurbished property retains all the romantic features of a traditional farmhouse cottage whilst offering all the modcons you could need.

We had an incredible time in Holne and enjoyed visiting two of the local pubs by foot. Fish and chips van came once a week and the local village store had everything we needed.

Lovely garden, really nice neighbours and wonderful walks on the doorstep.

Can thoroughly recommend this property to anyone wanting a quiet, relaxing holiday. We will be visiting again :)

Delightful cottage in a superb location for exploring Dartmoor

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week in early December when the weather was "mixed". The cottage was very comfortable and had everything we needed. The wood burning stove was much used and a real bonus at this time of year. There were just two of us (plus the dogs), but the cottage would be absolutely fine for two couples or a family.

We had our two dogs with us, with prior notice; they were welcome and we found a pile of "dog towels" waiting for us in the porch which supplemented the ones we had brought to deal with the inevitable muddy paws. The securely fenced and gated garden was really useful and the dogs loved it. So did the people - the terraced areas must be a wonderful place for an evening drink in the summer.

The village of Holne is a delight, with some very friendly people, an interesting old church, and best of all a village shop (superbly stocked) and tea rooms (nice food) open all year and run by volunteers who are a mine of local information, or just up for a good chat.

The area has great walking, but to access the best requires a bit of driving first. The open moor is close by and so is the River Dart, within 10 minutes walk on the Two Moors Way and offering some exciting kayaking for those inclined, or otherwise some lovely riverside walking.

One downside was that the village pub (50 yards from the cottage) was closed and has been since Spring 2016. There was much talk amongst local residents of it reopening soon under new local ownership, and let's hope it does, as with a good pub, this village would be just about most people's idea of rural bliss.

Whilst it is theoretically possible to park a car by the cottage, the track in is very narrow, has an awkward turn, and you have to reverse either in or out - no turning space. We did this once and then decided discretion was the better part of valour and used the village hall car park instead, which is just the other side of the church so a very short walk away.

Overall - highly recommended. If you want a two bed cottage in a Dartmoor village it is hard to see how you could do better.
