Nalo Cottage is a one bedroom garden cottage, a half block from one of the best beaches in Hawaii. The comfortable, spacious cottage has ten foot ceilings and approximately 760 square feet of living space. It is detached from the main house and furnished with a new, firm king bed, a pull-out sofa queen sleeper, cotton linens, and vintage koa wood furniture. The cottage is located in a quiet, family neighborhood still evocative of old Hawaii. We are within walking distance of good local cafes. Waimanalo Beach is a spectacular five mile white sand beach, a two or three minute walk from Nalo Cottage.
The front house is our home and we are happy to make your stay as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. We have slightly more than a quarter acre. We have a lovely yard that our younger guests have enjoyed very much. The cottage is equipped with wifi, basic cable tv, coffee, tea, linens, bath towels, beach towels, beach chairs, umbrellas and toys, ,boogie boards, and snorkeling equipment. The kitchen is fully outfitted with a cooktop, microwave, coffeemaker and coffee grinder, electric teakettle and toaster. You have access to a Weber bar-b-que and washer and dryer.
We spend six years looking throughout the Hawaiian Islands for a place to call home and found our perfect place in Waimanalo. It is not a tourist area and retains the character of a Hawaiian town. Our neighbors are friendly, and we respect them. The spectacular white sand beach is uncrowded. Waimanalo is semi-rural. There are many farms and nurseries across the highway from us on the mountain side. Waimanalo's produce and eggs are justly famous. But we still wanted to be able to attend concerts and cultural events, explore the Honolulu culinary scene, snorkel in Hanauma Bay, hike to the lighthouse, walk in the botanical gardens at the University of Hawaii, go shopping occasionally, and have access to great medical care. All these are easy to do from our home. If, during your quiet stay in Waimanalo, you'd like a night or two out on the town, Honolulu and Waikiki are 30 minutes away, and Kailua is only 15 minutes away. It takes 25 to 30 minutes to get from or to the airport.
There are several things you should know about Nalo Cottage before booking. There is plenty of free parking in the driveway. We cannot accommodate smoking anywhere on the property. Being in the tropics, we have a lot of geckos, which are harmless little green lizards. You may see them in the cottage, they seem to like hanging out on the window screens. We are occasionally visited by feral cats, chickens and roosters. Unlike the geckos, they are easily shooed away. In Hawaii, it is customary not to wear shoes in the house.
