About Karen Wilber Wessel

The Wessel family at our daughter's wedding at Belfair Plantation, SC.

Karen Wilber Wessel purchased this house in 2006

Why Karen Wilber Wessel chose Southwest

My husband and I were looking for a vacation home a short driving distance from Chicago, Detroit, and Lansing. After loads of research, we visited towns on the Lake Michigan coast and fell in love with Saugatuck. Its lively arts scene plus waterfront and world class Oval Beach were deciding factors.

What makes this house unique

Our home is in an historic neighborhood known as 'The Hill'. We are located just 2 blocks above the main streets of town and so it is easy for everyone in the family to come and go as they please, without cars. We can take the Chain Ferry across the river to the Lake Michigan side or elect to drive, bike, or run there. Service is also provided by the Interurban Bus for a very small fee. Saugatuck homes are mostly a mixture of Victorian, Federal, and Bungalow design and there is plenty to admire as one walks around town. Another plus is the close proximity to Holland, MI (about 12 miles). Here one can visit the Barnes and Noble and all the other national chains if a 'fix' is needed. UPick Farms and Wineries are also close by and there are tons of family type activities. Late evenings, the bar scene is lively with the added bonus of being able to walk home! The Center for the Arts (SCA)presents plays and concerts and the parking lot hosts the twice weekly farmer's market during the growing season. Sledding and cross country skiing are popular in the winter. There is a small ice rink across from the town square in the winter. In the summer, there are plenty of places along the Kalamazoo River to rent boats, kayaks, canoes, etc...Oh, and did I forget the shoppping? Saugatuck has an array of unusual shops....just walk down to town anytime and pop in. And, of course, don't forget to visit the many art galleries in Saugatuck and its sister town, Douglas.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"This is my second time renting this home for our annual Mom's getaway weekend. We have tried other locations in the past and decided that we no longer want to go anywhere else than this home. Karen (the owner) is so fantastic to work with. The house is absolutely gorgeous. There is so much character and charm to this home that it's impossible to mention them all. We arrived to a bottle of wine and chocolates, we hired her house manager to come in each morning and clean up any untouched dishes and get the coffee started for us. Her house manager brought fresh baked muffins. We felt so pampered and "at home" in this rental. I have already booked for our rental next year and can't wait. Highly recommend!"

Wonderful place!

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I rented this house for a weekend reunion. It was in perfect condition and spotless when we arrived. There are many common spaces to enjoy and every room is decorated in a lovely way.

The owner was extremely prompt in correspondence and gave us a lot of helpful information about the area. The area itself is also very charming, even in the winter. The local businessowners were all very friendly and kind and we had delicious meals at several restaurants.

Incredible!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I rented this for my 60th birthday celebration. Nine friends accompanied us.

The home was a perfect location for my gathering. It was spacious and offered so much privacy.

In fact, it is almost too lovely to rent to tourists! We have been staying at vacation condos/homes for many years and this was, by far, the nicest place we have ever rented.

The home is nicely furnished with beautiful decorations. All of my guests applauded the comfort of the mattresses (I am very picky about mattresses!). The kitchen area was the main gathering for our guests along with the 10 additional people who joined us for cocktails Saturday night. All were amazed with the home, and those not staying with us insisted on a complete tour. They were stunned by its beauty.

When we weren't in the kitchen area, we were in the adjoining family room watching football (it was a very rainy day). The sectional in that room was beyond belief; so supple and relaxing.

On that late October Friday afternoon, a few of us gathered on the pretty screened-in sun porch to have cocktails and enjoy the afternoon sun.

The home is located just two blocks from shopping in a quiet pretty neighborhood.

The kitchen is completely stocked with every kind of gadget you could possibly need.

I couldn't have chosen a better location for my 60th birthday and feel lucky to have stayed in this home. We are already planning a girl's escape for summer 2016.

Lovely home with all the amenities!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in this lovely home two weeks ago with a large group of friends. We all agreed that this is one of the nicest places we've stayed over the 25+ years we've been meeting. Not only is the house tastefully decorated and in a prime location, but the hosts provided all sorts of extras like plenty of toilet paper, soap, dish washer tabs, laundry detergent and even toiletries, so that we only needed to buy food. Being able to have the entire group at the table at once was also a big plus. We also really enjoyed the screened-in porch. And one thing deserves special mention - one of our party loves to cook, and brings his own knives everywhere. Unfortunately he forgot one at the house, and the owners sent it back to him at no extra charge. Should we go back to this part of the country for future reunions, we would gladly return here.

Great location and charming spacious well-equipped house.

  • 5 of 5

So convenient, both in the house and the charming town of Saugatuck. We had three generations there, and there was plenty of room for everyone to spread out. The temperature was in the 70's; the screened porch was perfect, and enjoyed by all. The first floor bedroom and bath were much appreciated by me, who can no longer do flights of stairs. Thanks, Karen, for a memorable week.

Wonderful house for a group - family or friends

  • 5 of 5

Step back in time to a more gracious style of living. Comfortable sitting rooms, charming decorations, four poster beds, screened-in porch. The house provides private areas where smaller groups can be off by themselves at times, yet can gather together at the dining table and adjacent porch for a meal together.

This was one of three houses that our family rented for a week, and it provided comfortable sleeping for 12. Not baby-proof perhaps, but wonderful for children maybe 5 and up

Generously supplied with kitchen and bathroom supplies. We loved the easy walk to downtown Saugatuck. We hope to be back next year!

Beautiful and fun!

  • 5 of 5

A great house and a great time! All twelve of us, with ages ranging from two to near eighty, thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this lovely, happy place. Great location for walking to everything. Quick and excellent responses from management -- they went the extra mile to make it perfect . Good-sized washer and drier, beach toys, well-stocked kitchen, information about the area -- everything needed for a relaxed and fun time.
