About the property

Destination Rental at the (former) Elkin & Allegheny Railroad Office

The (former) Elkin & Alleghany Railroad Office has been designated as an "Certified Historic Structure and Rehabilitation" by the US Dept. of the Interior. In addition, the railroad office received an Award of Merit for "Best Historic Rehabilitation Project" in 2017 from the NC Department of Commerce Main Street program.

Located in Downtown Historic Elkin on the west end of Main Street, we sit at the crossroads of the OverMountain Victory National Historic Trail, the Mountains-to-Sea Trail, and the Elkin and Allegheny Rail Trail. We are centrally located in the Yadkin Valley Wine Region with more than 40 tasting rooms to explore.

Convenient to local downtown restaurants, shops, and entertainment. Enjoy the events at Elkin Municipal Park, which is a short walk away. Relax with the peaceful sounds from the Big Elkin Creek waterfall across the bridge.

After 19 months of planning and rehabilitation work, the railroad office was opened as a destination rental in December 2016. The 523 sq. ft space offers a parlor, kitchenette, bedroom, and full bath.

The parlor includes a pullman sleeper sofa, chairs, drop table, and Smart TV. The kitchenette has wormy chestnut cabinets with granite countertops, a refrigerator with freezer, dishwasher, microwave, coffee pot, dinnerware, and cutlery. The bedroom offers a queen size bed and sitting area. The bathroom includes a shower with shower bar and jets, heated overhead fan, and dresser vanity. The backdoor leads to a outdoor patio with a fenced in yard. The outdoor area is nicely landscaped with a offset umbrella, patio table, and fountain.

Wonderful, cozy in-town property, walk to trails, river and shops.

I loved this newly renovated former railroad company office. Despite its small size, Deborah and Mark have paid close attention to all of the details that result in a very comfortable stay. It actually feels larger than the pictures appear. The finishes and fixtures in the kitchen and bathroom are high quality. I slept like a baby in the super comfy bed and loved the shower with all of the jets, and after a day of hiking both were most welcome! Cooking is limited to a toaster oven and small grill like a George Foreman type appliance, an outdoor grill would be a really nice option. I brought my dog and we really enjoyed the large gated yard. The location puts you within steps from the hiking trails and the shops and restaurants on Main Street. I went to a concert at the Reeves Theatre one night and it was really fun, a great band from Asheville was playing. The local brew pub had some tasty quaffs and good bites. Southern On Main was a pretty good restaurant as was Roxxi and Lulu's. The cafe at the Reeves served the best food in my opinion. Have a drink at Fiddles Pub which is next to Maggie's Place. Fun local scene with good bar food and live music. Elkin is a very friendly town, people wave and chat with you. And very dog friendly too. There are several wineries within an easy drive from town. The owners came over right away to fix a problem with one of the doors due to high wind but after that I had a difficult time getting in touch with them. I texted and e-mailed a few times with minor questions and didn't get a response. All in all, a great weekend get-away and I look forward to another visit.

Owner's Response: Hi Wendy.. I am happy you enjoyed your visit to Elkin. I do apologize for my delayed responses to your text and email. We had a family medical emergency, then a funeral visitation and funeral mass to attend.

Beautiful restoration in excellent location!

  • 5 of 5

Maggie's Place was the perfect vacation rental for my weekend in Elkin. The cottage is so charming and has been exquisitely restored. Everything was comfortable, clean, and so organized. The location was wonderfully convenient so we could walk down Main Street, explore local trails and shops, and easily drive to surrounding areas. I would absolutely stay here again. Kudos to the Imbuses for preserving this wonderful North Carolina treasure.

Wonderful old building now a rental getaway

  • 5 of 5

The owners did a great job in restoring this old railroad office into a nice, cozy getaway. The location is perfect for exploring Elkin and the surrounding areas. We were within an easy drive of several local wineries as well. The area was nice and quiet the weekend we were there. Overall, this was a great place to have a relaxing weekend.

Beautiful place, Cozy stay!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were able to take refuge from hurricane Irma in this beautifully restored cottage. We had such a great time in the house as it was the perfect place for us to enjoy some much needed peace and relaxation. Being in historic downtown Elkin made our trips for coffee, chocolate, and dinner easy. On the days we didn't dine out, we were able to make use of the nicely equipped kitchen. The patio outside was wonderful as well, we had our coffee and tea at the table and watched the sunset color the clouds as we got ready for the night. We both greatly admired the detail in the restoration and decoration of the cottage. Everything was clean and comfortable, and actually made the evacuation more of a vacation than a headache. The owners were very kind and quick to answer any questions we had about the cottage. I highly recommend this stay to anyone who might be passing through, or staying in the area to explore the vineyards.
