Undisputed capital of the Costa Smeralda, Porto Cervo is a coastal fraction of the Gallurese center of Arzachena, with a few hundred residents. In the summer it becomes an extraordinary and sparkling parade of yachts, yachts and celebrities: in the small square it is easy to find yourself shopping with film and television stars. Every day is a continuous alternation of appointments with the international jet set: parties, socialites, sporting events, golf in particular.
The village on the sea has risen around a natural inlet that resembles a deer. The old port dates back to the sixties of the twentieth century, when with a brilliant intuition Prince Karim Aga Khan IV, fascinated by the beauty of the stretch of coast, decided to buy the lands of this corner of Gallura and, together with the French set designer Jacques Couelle - later joined by some Italian architects - to give life to the paradise of the international elite tourism. In the 1980s work began on the construction of the new marina, today one of the largest and best equipped in the Mediterranean (700 berths), home to the Costa Smeralda Yacht Club, a prestigious club organizer of international sailing regattas. Walking on the docks you will admire the boats of rich characters moored.
The center of Poltu Celvu (in Gallura) is built on a raised floor with respect to the port. From the Piazzetta delle Chiacchiere to the Sottopiazza it is an intrigue of narrow streets, windows, balconies - built in what has become the style of the Costa Smeralda - and of shops and boutiques with prestigious brands. All around the most prestigious restaurants, luxury hotels, the most fashionable clubs, the center of the nightlife on the coast. The splendid villas climb up to the surrounding hills, immersed in the Mediterranean scrub. In planning, the prince and his collaborators thought they could create an architecture that maintained the continuity as much as possible with that typical local, inserting it perfectly in the environment: it was the key to success. About architecture, do not miss the Stella Maris church, designed by the architect Michele Busiri Vici, which dominates Porto Cervo marina.
A few steps from the tourist center, breathtaking beaches shine. In the turquoise, green and blue reflections of the sea the arched expanse of very white and soft sand of the Grande Pevero plunges, flanked by granite rocks shaped by time and Mediterranean scrub. Behind it stretch beautifully manicured golf courses that make the resort a popular destination for golf enthusiasts. Separated by a promontory, you will find the Piccolo Pevero, a beach less than half the length of the "big sister". Offshore you will admire the islets of Li Nibani, "the seagulls". Two kilometers further south there are other wonders: the Romazzino and the Principe beach (in honor of the Aga Khan). At the opposite base of the "emerald" promontory, you will be entranced by delightful coves, including Cala di Volpe and Liscia Ruja. Further south, you can't miss the paradise of Cala Capriccioli, beaches of fine and clear sand, protected by yellow, pink and reddish granite rocks. The name Gallurese means ‘caprette’, that is a pair of powerful and rounded smooth boulders that form various coves. The Lido in the East is ideal for families, the western side is formed by the beaches of "del Pirata" and "delle Tartarughe". The view is enriched by the islands of Soffi and delle Camere and the islet of Mortorio.
