About David Wallace

My wife Heidi and I live half time in Saginaw and the other half on the Betsie River 1/2 mile away from the farmhouse. We are both winding down from careers...I'm a small animal veterinarian and Heidi is a CPA-Consultant. We purchased the land and buildings in 2012 and spent 3 years renovating the farmhouse. The barn was completely renovated last year.

David Wallace purchased this house in 2012

Why David Wallace chose Thompsonville

Heidi and I have had a place on the Betsie River for the past 14 years and have been coming to the area for longer than that. We used Crystal Mountain a lot as we raised our two children. The farm was vacant for all the years we have been on the river and when the farm went up for sale, we purchased it with the idea to bring it back to life. We have planted a small vineyard and hop yard, and are now growing grain for the distillery down the road.

What makes this house unique

The view of the surrounding land and hills is mesmerizing and sitting on the front porch is as peaceful as it gets. We are close to Crystal Mountain, hiking, biking, canoeing, swimming and boating. There are beautiful small towns to explore and many restaurants, wineries, breweries, and distilleries withing an hours drive. We are about 45 minutes into Traverse City if you need a little night life.

Enjoyable!

  • 4 of 5

I own rental property and am very picky/ocd. I travel alot and I would recommend this property. Property is very quiet and we found it central for many things we wanted to do all over the top central /western side of the lower penisula. Alot to do within 30 mins in different directions. Plenty of parking - you could easily have an rv or two in the driveway! Ironfish Winery (owned by owners of this rental) next door but it is far enough away we didn't hear anything but close enough for food and vino! Seems like a popular neighborhood favorite in the evenings! Convenient gas/grocery few mins away and bigger grocery store 15 mins away. Walmart 20 mins away. House was very convenient for 6 people. Excellent layout - queen/full bath with gorgeous tub downstairs and queen bedroom and two twins bedroom with shower bathroom upstairs. Excellent washer/dryer area with suppies-very nice! Booked this propery because no pets allowed as we have pet allergies but we had alot of asthma issues - not sure why... House is very nicely renovated but I don't think totally finished - no blinds in 90% of windows including upstairs bedrooms so that was disappointing. It was very uncomfortable in the evenings from privacy point of view. Very private area though except for minimal traffic to winery so we dealt with it. LOVED the outside fire pit. Owner was kind enough to leave us some wood for first fire. Kids loved making smores and talking - plenty of chairs with cushions in nearby storage bin. Area is so beautiful! Showers need removable shower hand held sprayers to allow for better showers - beautiful bathrooms but not the best shower heads that resulted in low water pressure I think . Extremely well stocked for dishes/pots/pans etc so allowed us to cook quiet a few meals which was big cost savings as restaurants very expensive in this whole part of MI. Appliances all appear to be new and worked fabulously well. Only one tv though - none in any of bedrooms. Would not have been a big deal but when we got there - was a note that they had limited wi-fi plan and wanted us not to use wi-fi too much so that was a big negative for our kids who were dying to be on wi-fi after sightseeing all day etc...With good wi-fi, blinds, and maybe new shower heads this would definitely be a 5 star rental and somewhere you would want to go every time! Has tons of charm and character and is nicer in person than in the pictures.

Great location for us and wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

We purposely picked this location because it is close to everything we wanted, river rafting down in Baldwin, MI, Arcadia, Frankfort, and Sleeping Bear Dunes. This is NOT the place to stay if you want to run outside to the beach and watch the sunset, but if you are looking for family time, quiet location, or relaxation, this IS the place. This is a fantastic renovated farm house in the country. Everything is new and well cared for. I would stay here again in a heartbeat. We used all three bedrooms and both baths. The water pressure in the upstairs shower is minimal, but that is minor compared to the overall wonderful experience. We loved our stay and David was fantastic to deal with. He provided us local information and called to let us know about a group gathering (during the daytime) at a nearby property that had NO effect on us. In fact, I'm not sure why he called, but appreciated his concern. This is a well-managed property that should top you list when you are looking for a place to stay in the area.

Magical

  • 5 of 5

This newly renovated farm house is a home you will want to rent over and over and over again. It is situated on 120 acres of serene farm land. The recently renovated interior of this home tastefully exceeds all modern wants and needs. My wife and I along with our two sons rented this house for 9 days over the 4th of July week. We could not have asked for a better experience from our initial contact with the owner David Wallace to the very day we had to regrettably depart this magical destination. Time is re-calibrated once you step out of your car... you are immediately brought back to a simpler era - your cell phone will become a distant memory.

Spending time on the front porch is not only magical, it's mystical and medicinal at the same time. The sunrises and sunsets that unfold as you gaze to the east and west are awe inspiring. Words cannot describe how wonderful of an experience you will have! We cannot thank David Wallace and his wife enough for making our stay at their home such a magical experience! Thank you, thank you!
