Great stay on a Beautiful Island
The home was very clean and cozy. We had a wonderful stay. Lots of great snorkeling on the island. Darlene and Fred were great hosts. We had privacy but they were only steps away if needed. We would definitely stay again.
Nice & Clean, Pleasant Owners
Had a great time. Enjoyed using their beach chairs and towels.
All the comfort, great location.
Fred and Darlene were excellent and generous hosts. Accommodations great, bed very comfortable. Ceiling fans perfect. They have chickens which were fun to watch, you might even score some fresh eggs I'd you ask. Having a kitchen and full size fridge a big plus. Finally, a porch to sit and enjoy the scenery.
Peaceful, off-the-beaten path setting-hear the birds, see the stars
Perfect base for our four days on Culebra Island. We liked being outside the town and off the beaten path surrounded by nature and not other houses. Highlights were quiet mornings on the private front porch of the studio enjoying the sounds of nature (including chickens) and at night the stars were magnificent to see or we enjoyed sitting on the porch with lights off and a candle lit. (porch has roof now-- not pictured on property pics) So peaceful. The studio itself was very clean, feels fresh and new. Bed very comfortable. Bathroom very clean, feels brand new. Kitchen had everything we needed for simple cooking. We cooked breakfast every morning and a few other meals, often packed our lunches for days of exploring; enjoyed fresh eggs from Fred, as well as a papaya from the farm. The place felt very private, but Fred and Darlene were very responsive to anything we texted them about. Fred gave great advice about snorkeling on the island. It was great to have beach chairs, beach towels and a beach umbrella available for our use.Wifi worked well. We rented a golf cart. The only small con for us was occasionally feeling like we were running the golf cart a lot to get to beaches.
It was a great stay... we'd love to come back!
Quiet place with GREAT owners!
Hard to give this place only 3 stars. Fred and Darlene are both super nice and accessible if you need something but invisible if you don’t. They’re the best part of the place. We stayed at a nicer (and slightly more expensive) place in town before this and got spoiled. The good: Small covered front porch to sit on. Adequate cooking facilities. Nice bathroom. The not so good: Small ants on the counter every day. Tried using the stuff they had under the sink but the next day they were back. Had one unobtrusive gecko we saw several times on the wall, one very tiny scorpion that was easily squashed and one tiny spider, the same. Although much quieter than town there are crickets chirping all night and one lone rooster that crows in the morning. The shower has good pressure but we weren’t able to get the hang of adjusting the temperature. Stayed here five nights...it’s either scalding hot or ice cold with nothing in between. You’re in farm country so a nice view of the mountain across the road and lots of thick bushes and chickens (no real water view to speak of). Amenities are listed on Homeaway so you know ahead of time what you’re getting but what we missed when comparing to our first rental was: no microwave, no washer, no clothesline to hang your wet stuff (we just used the deck railing and they did have a nice outside rinse area), the bed wasn’t as comfortable, had to drive everywhere Zoni beach is closer but still a drive, creaky flooring, one of the beach chairs was completely ripped and taped and needed replacing, not much of a breeze here, wasn’t hot enough to use the a/c but we really liked the breeze at our first place. So again, other than the ants and the shower temperature I think this place is just fine especially for the price. The main difference was that our first rental was used by the owner when he’s on the island. He’s using the exact same things you are and keeps everything up to snuff for his renters if not himself. Literally anything you could possibly need was already there. This place has very sweet owners who live upstairs and are sharing the bottom level of their house with you. Can’t say enough good about them. This really isn’t a bad place to stay, it’s just not a great place. This island is about the beaches anyway so don’t sweat the details too much. You’ll be fine here.
Darlene and Fred’s place is a slice of heaven. Clean, contemporary, simple. Comfy bed, nice bathroom. This place is for folks who love quiet, nature, birds. Close to lovely, clean beaches. Fred and Darlene are a treat. Invisible but super helpful and Fred is a giver of lovely garden gifts; fresh eggs and salad stuffs. Beautiful retreat for those who enjoy peace, quiet, preparing simple meals and the beach.
Thanks Emily. We're so glad you enjoyed your stay with us. It was a pleasure having you and Rick here. Hope to see you again.
