About Dr. Murlene McKinnon "Mac"
I am retired from running a training business for police, judges, dispatch, and federal agents. Have pursued that career in the U.S. and foreign countries. Before that I was a professor of communications. Served in Peace Corps in Africa. Still travel extensively. Born in Detroit, grew up in Farmington, lived in Malawi, Africa; London, England; Edinburgh, Scotland. and Dublin, Ireland. Hobbies are reading, cross country skiing, travel, attending theater and concerts and eating out. Until 2016, when we reached our goal of building a new library, I developed (with a great team) the Tawas Uncork'd Wine, Ale and Food Festival which runs the first Saturday in August. My last trip was New Zealand's wine trails, Melbourne Australia and Dubai. The next is Norway.
Dr. Murlene McKinnon "Mac" purchased this Cottage in 2006
Why Dr. Murlene McKinnon "Mac" chose Tawas City
I bought The Cottage because it is next to my home on Lake Huron and therefore easy to deal with the needs of my clients. I also enjoy meeting new people and hearing their stories! It is especially nice for those looking to get away and enjoy some quality time. Every morning on Lake Huron is a new beginning because the lake rarely looks the same. It may look like a Monet painting one day and a |Turner or Constable the next. Bald eagles fly up and down the beach hunting a meal. The occasional loon dives and sounds it's eerie call. And, in the fall and spring the ducks and geese land and take off in their annual migrations. It is on the migration path for thousands of birds every fall and spring, so an ideal place for the Audubon folks. Sitting at your dining table you may see hummingbirds, cardinals, and robins while eating. From the front porch you may see swans, Canadian geese, ducks, bald eagles, hummingbirds and other birdlife.
What makes this Cottage unique
Sleep on a pillow top mattress and have the soothing waves of Lake Huron lull you to sleep. Sip a steaming cup of coffee or tea and watch the sun rise. Grab a glass of wine or make yourself a drink and watch a summer or fall Harvest Moon rise. This is a place to be really lazy - or indulge in as many activities as one pleases -- biking, hiking, kayaking, canoeing, reading, sunbathing, skiing, shopping, wine drinking, etc. State park beaches also nearby. Hammock available for those who really want to relax!

Gorgeous view, gracious host, wonderful cottage
Words cannot describe the view of Lake Huron-stunning! We were there while there was a full moon-breathtaking! Then to see the gorgeous sunrises made the day! The Cottage was perfect for our family of 4, everything was in tip top shape! We enjoyed a couple of relaxing evenings just playing games. It was close enough to town to not be a big deal to drive in, yet far enough out to feel out in the woods. Mac was the perfect hostess! We loved the wine she chose, and enjoyed conversations with her. Perfect getaway for us!
That is exactly why I like living here! The sun rises and full moons rising over Lake Huron make it special. With The Cottage next door, I can meet my guests and suggest activities and restaurants. What is really nice is the ability to relax once you take residence.
Appreciate your comments. Do join us again.
Great Place to Relax
My husband and I spent a few days here with our daughter, son-in-law and granddaughter. We all had such a great time in town, at the Wine Festival, the State Park and by the firepit in the backyard!!
As always, you guys are a pleasure to have. Great discussions and interesting observations! AND, that is one very cute baby.
Hope to see you next year!
Great cottage for 4 people, wonderful view of Lake Huron .close to everything you need
Very clean cottage. I wish I could have stayed longer, thanks again "Mac"
Perfect Summer Getaway
This is the third time I've stayed in this cottage and I am yet to be disappointed. We have a family of three (with a young child) and find the space perfect for our vacation needs: clean accommodations, a kitchen to make travel meals and snacks easy, and space for everyone to read a book, do a puzzle and enjoy some time away from the fray. You simply can't beat the view of the lake out back - we enjoyed every minute (it was even stunning during a short thunderstorm). We enjoyed "nature walks" up and down the quiet street (great for bikes if you have them.) We loved our Village Chocolatier chocolates that were waiting for us when we arrived (thank you!) -- and enjoyed going to the Chocolatier for lattes in the morning (coffee first... then adventure.). We spent the week exploring the beaches out at "The Point" state park, and climbing the stairs and enjoying the quiet at Iargo Springs (I can only assume this spot is beyond lovely in the fall when the colors turn)... It was a busy week, but was always nice to return to the cottage at night to enjoy the sound of the waves and a peaceful night's sleep. Thanks to Mac for hosting us once again. We look forward to returning!
You feel the way we do about rest and relaxation mixed with adventure while staying on Lake Huron. The lake is ever changing and provides a new picture everyday, particularly with the rising suns and harvest moons. We are so glad that you enjoyed yourselves. You know you are welcome again next year. You are great guests! And, yes, fall is gorgeous with all the shades of red, orange yellow and brown.
It was everything I expected and more!
Wonderful cottage. Immaculate. Had everything we needed. TRight on the water, lovely neighborhood
Our hostess lives next door and was attentive and fun to talk with but very respectful of our privacy. The Cottage was perfect for our mid week R&R!
It is always fun to have great guests. You guys are interesting and fun. Please come again!!
