The arrival of Steve
With these few lines, we want to outline the relationship of Steve Ballesteros with Valle Romano. There would be so much to tell, but we will stick to the last years since his life broke on that fateful day of 2008 in Barajas airport. After this moment, he demonstrated that besides being a great champion, he was a great fighter who let us know the human side of the myth, who already is a golf legend.
We did not have a professional link to use; it was deeper than that, something between admiration, affection, complicity, and familiarity. It is hard to define, but what we do know is that we keep so many memories, so many unique moments. Now, that is our legacy and obligation to preserve it and promote it.
Since Valle Romano was only a project, Steve committed himself and continued until the end, until the last moment. On our visits to Pedreña, while he was fighting against his illness, he always wanted to know: 'How is the course doing? How are you doing with the housing?' He was always eagerly to know any progress, even if it were insignificant. He would listen to us with infinite attention and would give us his opinion, which was always well received.
Valle Romano has a legacy which is a treasure now. We are part of the memory of one of the greatest golfers in the world. From this heritage, we keep the smallest things, but also the most intimate, such as his signature inaugurating the book of signatures of the golf course in which he wrote this kind dedication: 'If I may say so, I feel like a member of the Valle Romano family...'
Like the most prized fortune, we also keep presents which we received from him: caps, polo shirts, signed golf balls, a bag for clubs, and a club which he used for 1 of his victories. Some of these gifts are exhibited in the windows of the Valle Romano Clubhouse. there, you can also find a sculpture with the hands of the great sportsman gripping a golf club, his famous and incomparable grip.
Furthermore, each player who passes by Valle Romano will have a special memory of Steve. Hole 9, the most iconic of the course, is named after him.
He did everything possible to accompany us in the inauguration of the golf course in June 2010. But this became impossible to him. He took the care of sending us a luxury ambassador, his close friend, José Mª Olazábal, who with a contained excitement showed a plaque in name of Steve Ballesteros which will forever remain in one of the entries of the Clubhouse.
We will always remember the message he left recorded to congratulate us on the inauguration (another treasure): 'I wish you all the best and to be very happy! And may you make many birdies!'
