ACCEPTING RESERVATIONS FOR 2019!
Experience Alaska from a true log cabin nestled in the upscale Anchorage Hillside neighborhood, on a private 1+-acre lot with stunning views. Relax in the midnight sun amidst a blend of landscaped lawn/garden and wildlife habitat, and enjoy the interior quiet afforded by the thick log walls and massive beams. Moose and bear pass freely through the property, located a 3-minute drive from ski areas and Chugach State Park trailheads. Easy 15/20-minute drive to downtown Anchorage.
GREAT ROOM: Features the same log aesthetic as the cabin exterior, with nearly no drywall hiding the logs. In one open room, this part of the cabin holds the kitchen, dining area, and living room, giving the place a much larger feel than its 1300 square feet. We have maintained the cabin's original simplicity, including painted plywood floors, industrial floor tiles, and open cabinetry. Part of its charm includes some sloping floor areas and original interior log chinking. Together, the open floor plan and exposed log walls provide a wonderful sense of peace. Overhead lighting simulates daylight, and in the seasonally darker hours lamps, string lights, and the fireplace cast the coziest of glows.
BATHROOM: Claw foot tub with shower ring, bright lighting, and the same wonderful high ceiling as the rest of the cabin.
BEDROOM: Queen platform bed, all-natural latex mattress, and large window to watch moose as they graze, bed down, or pass through on the wildlife trails behind the cabin.
LOFT: Sure-footed climbers ascend to a single bunk next to a large window (sleeps 1). In same room as washer/dryer.
SLEEPER SOFA: Pulls out in Great Room in front of fireplace. Nearly brand new, sleeps 2 (full/double size).
ADDITIONAL SLEEPING OPTION: Queen Aerobed available that could be set up to sleep 2.
Note: VRBO has an automated description of "3 bedrooms" which really isn't accurate. There's one bedroom, a single upper bunk in a room with the washer/dryer, and the sleeper sofa out in the main room.
GUEST ACCESS: Guests have the entire one-acre property to themselves, including outdoor seating areas by the grill and on the porch. Portable chairs are available. Spruce trees and vegetation shield the cabin from neighboring properties. Your only uninvited guests will be moose and their calves and the occasional bear. Quiet residential street with next to no traffic. Onsite parking.
OF SPECIAL NOTE: The cabin is equipped with Wi-Fi; there is no TV or cable. Dishes are washed by hand (no dishwasher). The four-burner electric stove is smaller than the standard size but is completely functional as part of the fully-equipped kitchen. There are no window coverings or blinds due to the entirely private setting. The large main bedroom window is tinted. If you think you'll have trouble sleeping in the midnight sun April-September, please bring an eye mask.
KIDS: The open cabinetry holds a lot of breakable glass, stoneware, and cleaning supplies. The cabin has not been child-proofed in any way. The fireplace is open at floor-level. We call it a toddler's dream and a caregiver's nightmare. Infants are welcome, as well as older kids who would not damage antiques and furnishings. If your child loves to use coasters, we'd love to host him or her!
ELDERS: The cabin does not feature any handrails or other handicapped accessible features. Getting into the vintage clawfoot tub requires the necessary balance and knee action to step in and out.
WOOF: Our dogs are with us when we are at the cabin (it's our home when it's not reserved), but otherwise they're not around. Your dogs are welcome with our advance approval. Regardless of the instant booking option, pets are welcome only with our approval, so please send a message before reserving. No cats.
HAPPY FEET: Bring slippers to wear indoors - the cabin floor can be chilly.
CAR: For visitors to the area, a rental car is recommended to maximize your experience staying at this location. In winter, guests will typically need a vehicle with 4-wheel or AWD.
NEIGHBORHOOD: Located at the foot of the Chugach Mountains, the Hillside neighborhood is only 15 to 20 minutes (12 miles) from downtown Anchorage. The cabin is a two-minute drive from Hilltop Ski Area and Far North Bicentennial Park, which feature downhill skiing and miles of cross-country skiing/hiking/biking/running trails. The trails directly connect to other trail systems all the way to Kincaid Park. The cabin is just as close to the nearly 1/2 million-acre Chugach State Park, one of the four largest state parks in the USA. The Anchorage Golf Course is a five-minute drive from the cabin. The restaurants and boutiques of South Anchorage are within a ten-minute drive.
