Whomever loves Tuscany, will also love the Sabina (Lazio)! Just above Rome, in the 'campagna' of the medieval village Roccantica, lies Borgo Gaia Sabina.
An ideal base for visiting cities such as Rome, Siena, Viterbo, Orvieto, Arezzo, etc., but also for a day at the beach of the Tyrrhenian Sea.
The house is located in the heart of the Sabina Bassa, according to some Italians: Italy's best kept secret. This region has picturesque ancient villages like Roccantica, Casperia, Poggio Catino and Cantalupo, at a distance of less than 10 minutes. The largest town of Poggio Mirteto with a variety of shops and lively Friday market is a 15 minute drive away. And all within 45 minutes by car or train from the center of Rome!
Borgo Gaia Sabina, you will not be bored. Besides the beautiful hiking and biking trails on hills and olive groves, it is possible to go horse riding and tennis. There are about nine golf courses in the immediate vicinity of Rome. Yoga, massages, cooking classes, markets: there really is something for everyone.
Although the olive presses only work from October to January, there are guided tours accompanied by an experienced guide throughout the year.
For beach lovers we recommend the beaches of Fregene and to Tarquinia, these are within an hour's drive from the hamlet. Tarquinia his tour of the Etruscan tombs highly recommended.
For winter sports enthusiasts (cross country and downhill skiing) are the Monte Terminillo near Rieti (one hour) and Campo Felice Abruzzo (half hour).
For shoppers, there are, of course, besides the shops of Rome, Monte Soratte Mall (20 minutes) and the Porta Di Roma Mall (35 minutes). Both are located directly on the A1.
For culture is within 45 minutes drive not only the eternal city of Rome, but also with the famous Duomo Orvieto, Siena, the scary sculpture of Bomarzo and the thermal baths of Viterbo. Pompeii is within 3 hours away.
There are over 25 restaurants in the immediate vicinity of the Borgo to choose from to go for a delicious and affordable meal. Remember pranzo (lunch) on Sunday, the most important meal of the week for the Italians. Reservations are recommended.
Throughout the year there are festivities in the small villages for the most diverse reasons. The celebration of Ferragosto (August 15) in Roccantica is known throughout the area.
Sabina is often called Italy's best kept secret. This region, easily accessible from the motorway A1 is in an area with no industry. As far as the eye can see, there are olive - and vineyards. The hills of the Sabina are the foothills of the Apennines, with altitudes up to 1200 meters. The villages are ancient and each village has its own castle. Borgo Gaia Sabina is located in the outskirts of Roccantica, a village on top of a hill, an exceptionally fine example of medieval architecture. This small village has only 632 inhabitants, but is known for its typical Italian village festivals.
The largest town in this region Poggio Mirteto. The train from Poggio Mirteto takes you within 45 minutes to the center of Rome (Tiburtina Station). Parking at the station is free.
