Conveniently located in Niumalu town, just outside of Lihue. Approximately 3 miles from the airport, walking distance to Kalapaki Beach, The Marriott Hotel, Dukes Canoe Club Restaurant and Bar, JJ's Broiler, Harbor Mall, Anchor Cove and many other restaurants and shopping. A 2 mile drive to Puakea Golf Course, Costco, Home Depot and Kukui Grove Mall, Kukui Grove Theatre and more.
Within a 20 minute drive to the South, you can be in sunny Poipu where some of our most popular beaches are. There you can snorkel, sunbathe, free-dive, scuba, whale-watch, surf, take in our gorgeous sunsets and dine at the most exquisite restaurants.
A 45 minute drive in the other direction will take you to our glorious North Shore where you can explore Ke'e Beach for snorkeling, Hanakapiai Trail for hiking, Hanalei Bay for strolling, surfing, sunbathing, bbq-ing, jumping off the pier, sailing, boating, etc.

A gas barbeque grill is available upon request. Smoking is allowed outside.

My name is Martie Law and I am the property manager for Malu Kauai, a beautiful Kauai cottage. I was born and raised on Kauai after my family arrived from California in 1969. My grandfather, father and several uncles were all in the construction industry, running several successful General Contracting companies over the last 45+ years. I am a full time real estate broker with Oceanfront Sotheby's International Realty in Lihue, mother of one, and love architecture, history, nature and photography.
Ed and Barb are the owners of Malu Kauai (and happen to live next door) and have been long time family friends. They love Niumalu for its central location and small community feel. Ed is meticulously clean and Barb has an amazing affinity for hospitality. They make the perfect vacation rental owners and are happy to share their cottage with you.
Niumalu is a small rural town within the Lihue district. Lihue being where the airport is, the hospital, the mall, theater, seat of government, etc. makes it centrally located between the two ends of the island. Kauai essentially has one road to get to the North Shore or the West side so Lihue sits equal distance from either direction. Getting to and from the airport is a breeze with no traffic and there are lots of shopping, restaurants and historic attractions in Lihue.
A venture to the North Shore will be approx. 50 minutes depending on where your final destination is. Visit Hanalei Bay, Kee Beach, Hanakapiai Trail for an exquisite North Shore experience.
A drive South will only take 20 minutes to Poipu Beach Park, National Tropical Botanical Gardens and more. Visit shops and restaurants at Kukuiula and get everything you need. Then catch the sunset at the end of the day.
Go West with a 45 minute drive and visit some of the most beautiful beaches in the world.
Staying at Malu Kauai allows you exclusive use of a small home with all the amenities to match. Parking is easy, and directly outside the unit. There is no formal check in process, only a lock box at the front door. Laundry is in a small room outside the house and you have exclusive use of the entire house including your own lanai for BBQ'ing. Much better than a hotel, and cheaper too!
We really enjoyed the house you set aside for us. I liked it better than the B & B we stayed at in Hanalei, mainly because of the A/C box in the bedroom, but also because of its location (and the bed was better, too). And we liked the kitchen, and the basket was a nice touch too. When we come back to the island in the future I will shop with you first!
The cottage was perfect for 2 people. The location was great and easy to get anywhere we wanted to go on the island. The cottage was clean and comfortable with everything we could possibly need for our stay. We would highly recommend this rental!
I really enjoyed my experience here. The cottage was well stocked and clean. and everything worked. We were able to walk to the Marriott/Dukes/Kalapaki beach. On the way we saw the neighborhood turkeys, peacocks, and horses which was very fun. Watching the sunset at the boat harbor was beautiful. Last time our family came to Kauai we stayed in a condo in Princeville, and this time I was looking for a difference experience. I enjoyed local neighborhood traffic (the Kauai hotel was across the street, but not busy or obnoxious) and local wildlife. If you are looking for that clean and cozy experience with no shared walls, and all sort of things going on around you - this is a great place. I can't think of any cons since I loved hearing turkeys and peacocks: except perhaps if you wanted the immaculate perfectly quiet vacation this isn't the spot.
We thoroughly enjoyed this cottage...clean, very clean! Nicely appointed with nice linens and furnishings. Well stocked with toiletries and kitchen items. Loved the private deck and superior laundry facility included in the fee. Wi-Fi worked great as did the TV. The welcome basket of candies and cookies was appreciated. This was one of our more expensive of 4 rentals on the islands but well worth the cost. Location worked well for us.
We had a great time staying in this cottage. It had everything we needed, and more (literally). It is just a short drive away from shopping, and sight seeing. The bed was great, the kitchen was perfect and they even had snorkel gear, boogie boards and anything else you need to have a good time in Kauai. We would for sure recommend this place to anyone wanting to stay on the island.
The house was perfect for my wife and I to be comfortable during our trip. Having rented facilities before which were lacking in cookware, dishes, etc. to prepare food, we were delighted to find ample cookware, dishes, glassware, etc. as we enjoy preparing and cooking our own meals. The bed was very comfortable as well. Great view of mountain ridges from lanai. Essential to have a car to explore and get around. The walk to Kalamaka Beach was through harbor industrial areas. Nice to be a close drive to the Costco and the Safeway store.
As we stayed nearly 3 weeks it was great to have a washer and dryer!
Only reason we would rate it 4 stars is for the traffic noise mornings and evenings.
