About Barry Cox

My name is Barry Cox. For 25 years Steve Butts was my best friend. We met in Aspen where he lived and I had a vacation home. In the early 90’s Steve left Aspen for Telluride speculating on its future and started Telluride Properties now the largest real estate company in Telluride. Steve loved the outdoors and took advantage of it everyday. He was an excellent and avid skier, sailor, scuba diver and spanned the globe golfing including the notorious St. Andrews course in Scotland. We spent many adventures and vacations together. Tragically and ironically in January 2005, he lost his life at the age of 48 to an avalanche while 2 groups from Aspen and Telluride were helicopter skiing in Canada. I was in the other group. For 16 years, Steve had skied the same outfit and run and had said that if he died he wanted it to be in Canada powder skiing with his friends on a run called Subaru Trees. And that’s what happened. Steve is one of the greatest person’s I’ve ever had the privilege of knowing.

Barry Cox purchased this house in 2005

Why Barry Cox chose Telluride

In 1997, Steve built a beautiful home early on in the development of Mt. Village. It’s situated on the 8th fairway with breath taking views of mountains and wilderness from every room (sprinkled with a few homes and ski runs now) in all directions. In August of 2005, a group of Steve’s friends started a memorial golf tournament in his name with proceeds going to the local youth’s ski team. Steve’s house was currently on the market furnished including the Porsche Cayenne. During the weekend someone mentioned that I should buy the house and keep it “in the family.” I was already staying there and the next morning I got up and started looking at every room and saying “this is a great house” tasteful furnishings, stereo system throughout, game room with pool table, outdoor spa, master steam shower & Jacuzzi, and a SUV!

What makes this house unique

The rest is history so to speak, as guests will notice there is a refrigerator outdoors with a plaque on it that says “This one’s for Hilby!” Apparently, Steve settled a commission to local realtor Steve Hilbert by keeping the refrigerator stocked with Coors beer forever! I maintain the tradition in Steve’s honor--along with an assortment of beer always in the outdoor fridge on the patio. So when you see the golf carts drive up and people get out and help themselves to a cold on,e you can bet they knew Steve Butt’s and still call him friend.

Beautiful mountain views but the house needs many repairs and general maintenance.

  • 1 of 5

There were numerous problems with the house:

- couldn't open windows in several rooms. Cranks were loose, didn't work, or missing.

- One bedroom upstairs could not be used because it was too hot. Signs on windows read "Do Not Open".

- Furniture throughout the house is old, worn out, and very uncomfortable. Beds, living room, kitchen.

- Blinds in the kitchen couldn't be adjusted. The adjustment rods were missing.

- Front panels on most kitchen drawers were loose and/or missing screws. Some are about to fall off.

- Shower heads in a couple of bathrooms could not be adjusted so to get wet you had to lean into the side of the shower. Almost too dangerous to use the shower.

- The media room was basically useless. We tried to turn on the TV, finally got it working. Then we couldn't turn it off. We grew tired of messing with it.

- Some of the light switches in the kitchen didn't work properly. Turn on a light, then two minutes later it turns off by itself.

- The garage door opener in the car didn't work so you had to open the garage door from the inside.

We've rented this house three times over the past ten years and it appears that little to nothing has been done to maintain or improve the house. The furniture is very old and uncomfortable, the beds are old and uncomfortable, the pillows are old and lumpy, the comforters on the beds are old and lumpy, there isn't enough light to read in the bedrooms, and most everything in the house looks, feels, and operates like they are old.

We love the views from this house but because of the condition of the furnishings and lack of general maintenance, we won't be staying here again. That's a real shame because this was our favorite house here in Telluride.

Owner's Response: In the 12 years of renting my house, this is the first negative review I have ever received. If the return renter had called me, l could have taken care of most of their problems. But nobody call or emailed.

Absolutely Stunning - One of a Kind

  • 5 of 5

Barry was very responsive and took care of all concerns immediately along with housekeeper Pam who was wonderful.

Home is beautiful and one of a kind inside and out. A top choice to stay anytime in Telluride. Both location and home are simply perfect!

Very nice house

  • 4 of 5

The house was great but had a few flaws. The back yard lights did not turn on when pressing the multi switches no matter which one we tried. Big screen TV in the den does not work just the sound from the receiver was working. BBQ grills were filthy from last renters. The SUV back doors do not lock.

Owner's Response: THIS IS THE ONLY EVEN SEMI NEGATIVE REVIEW I HAVE EVER RECEIVED IN 12 YEARS OF RENTING. 1.There are essentially no outside lights, because there is a city ordnance prohibiting light pollution. They want you to enjoy the stars on a clear night. 2.The TV does work, and there are very detailed instructions right by the remote. 3.The SUV rear doors do lock, it is a Porsche which I include with the house free of charge. 4.Sorry about dirty BBQs. It was a same day turnover. and the house keeper was probably rushed. In fact these people wanted to check in early, which I let them do. None of these problems were reported to me during their stay, or I could have fixed them, except for the dirty BBQ They had my cell number and email if they wanted help with their problems.

Perfect setting. Great house and even better views.

  • 5 of 5

This was the 2nd time we've stayed at this house, and will be sure to do so again. The layout was perfect for our 3 families (10 people), where each family had plenty of privacy at night. The views are awesome, with the golf course creating an openness and unobstructed views. We've stayed in "ski-in/ski-out" Telluride homes before, but prefer the open spaces, views and privacy (and more reasonable cost). Owner is friendly and easy to work with. Can't wait to book again for next year.
