Beautiful house and great location to visit Volcanoes National Park!
This house is spacious, functional and beautifully decorated. The hosts have provided many extras like coffee, bottled water, hotel toiletries in the bathroom, and even jackets if you didn’t pack for the cooler weather at this elevation. The yard is beautifully landscaped. We enjoyed going to the volcano during the day, and then returning after dark for even better views of the changes occurring in the crater. We loved our time in this part of the Big Island at this special house!
Beautiful home and gardens!
We love this property. We have stayed here several times. The home and grounds are beautiful and well maintained.
Great house in great location for Volcanoes National Park
My rating is based entirely on the home, it’s amenities, and location in relation to Volcanoes National Park. I make this distinction because one’s expectations of the area will play into their enjoyment/appreciation of the property. First, the home. This is in a great location on a well-paved but little used road in Volcano Village about 5-6 minutes from the entrance to the National Park. The lot is beautifully landscaped, and is very private. At the same time, the wrap-around deck, ample windows and sliders, and vaulted ceilings of the living room make for a very open feel. The kitchen is large and well appointed, as are the bathrooms and bedrooms. Based on our desire to be able to go in and out of the national park, both day and night, without a 30-45 minute drive from Hilo and east coast, or a 2-3 hour drive from the Kona coast, this place was perfect.
That said, you have to be aware that, especially in winter (Jan-March), the weather here at about 4000 ft altitude is very different than at the coasts. The daytime highs rarely reach into the upper 60s and at night it’s usually in the low 50s. Add to that 10+ inches of rain each month and 60+% cloud cover and you have a challenging weather situation for a house-probably ANY house in the area. You have to deal with humidity and cold temps which means dehumidifiers and either electric heaters or a wood fireplace. This property has all three, and with some extra work you can keep yourself comfortable, but this will not feel like your “tropical vacation getaway”. It actually reminds me of summers in northern Michigan.
Again, it’s all about expectations. For me and my son, and our 3 full days of hiking in Volcanoes National Park, often after dark, the location was worth it. If you’re only planning on doing the usual sightseeing drive around the park, and maybe a couple of shorter day hikes, then staying at lower elevation and “commuting in” makes more sense. You will be more comfortable and have a wider choice of outdoor activities when not at the park if you stay close to the coast.
Really enjoyed it
Great home. Thank you.
Great home. Thank you.
We loved our 2 night stay in this adorable rain forest Volcano home. Lots of room for 2 couples. It is obvious that the owners take pride in this home. Clean and well appointed. We enjoyed near by restaurants and the small village feel. It was rainy while we were there and we did need to build a fire ( wood sold at hardware/grocery store) and use the heaters provided. We did blow the circuit breakers when using hair dryer and heaters at the same time. I would highly recommend.
View active lava flows in the majestical place of Volcanoes National Park.
