About Derek Risk

This home has been purchased as a holiday home for our family. We have an Irish and Scottish background and spent many holidays in Ireland. So to bring our children here is like history repeating itself!

Derek Risk purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Derek Risk chose County Clare

The house is set in the village and is walking distance to the pubs, restaurants and all amenities.

The village of Carrigaholt 'Rock of the Fleet' is a historic fishing port watched over by a 15th century castle. Located on the Loop Head Peninsula in County Clare, there is an island feel to the area, unspoiled and refreshingly underdeveloped. There is a sandy beach and picnic areas, a choice of pubs offering good food and warm hospitality. On the doorstep there are pubs for every taste.... a quiet pint, impromptu traditional music sessions, pub grub. An excellent fish food pub / restaurant and a local shop for groceries and fuel and fishing tackle. There is also a fresh fish sales outlet on Castle Pier. During the Summer there is usually an Oyster festival and a Family Festival in the village and a Jazz festival and workshop in a neighbouring village. There is a beach and 2 piers for fishing.

Carrigaholt is a small sea-side village at the very mouth of the Shannon, the village has become a popular summer destination for the serious traveller. A fine keep and lawn of a small castle (one of the McMahons') stands near the pier. This castle has a long and colourful history of siege, capture, betrayal: quite a microcosm of Irish History. A few miles away is the birthplace of Eugene O'Curry who was honoured by having his likeness put on a postage stamp some years ago. O'Curry was a noted Gaelic scholar. The coastal scenery around Carrigaholt is spectacular with spendid examples of cliffs, sea-stacks, sea-caves, chasms and rocks; the well-known 'Bridge of Ross' is a sea-arch formed by marine erosion.

In the village and locally there is a possibility for many and varied activities. There is a sheltered uncluttered beach within a few minutes walk. Bottle nosed dolphin watch boat trips leave from the pier. There is Deep sea angling and scuba diving trips and lessons. There is fishing from both piers and from the rocks locally.

What makes this cottage unique

Dolphinwatch Carrigaholt offers you the unique opportunity of experiencing bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops Truncatus) in the natural habitat surrounded by spectacular coastal scenery.

At the mouth of the River Shannon between the Loop Head Peninsula (County Clare) and Kerry Head (County Kerry) lives a group of over 140 wild resident dolphins. Calves (baby dolphins) are born each year and are usually present in the family groups.

Imagine the joy of encountering a group of these dolphins.... to watch them leap beside you and skim the water's surface... to look into the eye of a dolphin while it surfs the bow waves!

Sea Angling is available from Mary and Luke Aston, check out their website www.fishandstay.com.

The Burren is a place of unrivalled natural beauty that must be seen to be believed. It's unique barren limestone landscape is a treasure house for geologists, botanists, archaeologists, potholers, poets, artists, photographers, dreamers, hillwalkers and lovers of the great outdoors!

Kilkee Waterworld - fun for all the family based on the Kilkee Promenade. Seaworld and Leisure Centre based at Lahinch. Bunratty Castle and Folk Park and Mediaeval Banquets. Knappogue Mediaeval Banquets in Quin. Boat trips to Scattery Island from Kilrush and to the Aran Islands from Doolin.

The world famous Lahinch links golf is approx 30 miles drive from Carrigaholt. Fabulous Doonbeg (Greg Norman designed) is approximately 10 miles drive. Ballybunion, known to golfers, is approx 40 minutes via the Tarbert ferry.

We Miss our Happy Place!!!

  • 5 of 5

Our family was looking to rent a suitable place on the West Coast of Ireland for a month. My retired Mother wanted to stay for an extended trip and it was paramount that we found a place that met her needs. Not only did we find the right house, we found our new home away from home!

The house was equipped with most anything you would need. The owners went above and beyond in answering all questions that we had about the home, shopping, places to visit, etc. They gave us fabulous advice and directions and the pictures they posted of the home did NOT do it justice! Derek and Claire were fabulous and I’m so happy to have worked with them as everything they stated was correct and more than met our expectations. The house itself was quite large, very cozy and provided most amenities that were needed.

The neighbors were absolutely fantastic! Exceptionally friendly and made us all feel right at home rather than outsiders. The tiny village of Carrigaholt was very quaint and all of the people there were extremely friendly and helpful as well. We could NOT get enough of the Pub life there…Carmody’s was great fun! We’d meet up there each night with our new friends that were made and chat the night away.

It’s hard to find anything negative to say about the house other than the lack of a working phone 'land line' or internet service at the property. It made it difficult to find and communicate with family members. Our entire family was coming from ‘across the pond’ at different times of the month and it was rather alarming when we were unable to connect with family members to assure they had arrived at the house safely after being jet lagged. The cell phones did not work for the first several days nor did their lap tops or iPads. Once we were able to establish internet connection at the pubs, our anxiety was alleviated once we heard that all was well and that our mother and my daughter and niece were safe and having the time of their lives! A little bump in the road for us but if you are really looking for a TRUE ‘get away from it all', this house is JUST perfect! You can really just unplug and relax.

The only other small negative was that the oven's thermostat did not work therefore we had to turn the oven on and off to regulate cooking. Not a big deal but a bit of a negative.

All and all, the owners, the house itself and quaint little village surpassed our expectations. We would highly recommend this house as it became our little Irish Home away from Home!
