Charming Six Bedroom Waterview East Chop Victorian, Excellent Location

Bedrooms 6
Half Baths1
Space 2,500 sq. ft.
Property type cottage
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

6 Bedrooms, 1-1/2 bathrooms, Outside Shower - Sleeps 10.

Our East Chop Waterview Victorian Cottage is in an excellent location to enjoy all that Martha's Vineyard has to offer. It is outside of town on a quiet dirt road, but close enough to everything to either walk or ride your bike.

The house overlooks a pine and oak forest to the West and Nantucket Sound to the East where the sun rises out of the water in the summer. Wake up with your coffee and walk 5 minutes to Jetty Beach, Oak Bluffs harbor or the East Chop Beach Club for an early morning swim.

Walk around the harbor from either Jetty Beach or along East Chop Drive to Oak Bluffs, passing the town's public boat ramp and waterfront houses. Pass the moored sailboats in the harbor and walk along the quayway into town where motorboats and charter fishing boats rest in their slips.

Pass newspaper and coffee shops, restaurants, bicycle rental stores, movie theatres and the Flying Horse Carrousel on the way to Circuit Avenue & Ocean Park, all before breakfast. Life is good!

There have been many upgrades in the last several years, including; a new roof and windows, new downstairs bathroom with warm floor tiles, a rebuilt porch, shingling, painting and an updated kitchen with all the conveniences to help make it as warm and comfortable in the spring and fall (with the fireplace's Vermont Casting propane stove) as it is in the summer. Many guests return year after year in the summer or for off-season weeks. Others come back intermittently for weddings, romantic weekends, and family gatherings. Everyone seems to race to his or her favorite bedroom upon arrival!

History: Our former Methodist Campground cottage was moved from downtown Oak Bluffs by horse and cart, around the harbor and up the hill to East Chop Highlands sometime before 1896. Photos of the house in 1896 and 1910 offer a historic perspective.

The house has been added onto extensively since its move. The photograph from 1896 shows the house with old gingerbread trim on a gabled end, a balcony that no longer exists, as well as an older woman sitting in a rocker on the porch. Her age in the picture and the age of the photo indicate that she may have been born around the time of Jefferson's presidency. An extensive description of the house and how it has been renovated over the decades appears in the back of the 'Guide to East Chop Families'' written by Jane Meleney Coe.

The house is fully equipped in the kitchen, in the dining room, on the porches and for beach picnics, as well as on the deck where barbecuing and dinner under the stars is a favorite activity. The house is ready for your laptop with wireless broadband service. The living room has a flat screen TV with cable.

Outside furniture, beach chairs are available in the basement, which is near the hot and cold water outside shower and changing area. Trips to town are easy for walkers or bikers, and local restaurants, like the Ocean View, and convenient newspaper, food and liquor stores like Our Market and Tony's Market are close at hand. The house has a lawn with an underground sprinkler system. A hammock and Adirondack furniture are hidden in the woods, and bird feeders and innovative ''yard art'' sculptures grace the gentle setting.

Please contact the owner via email for questions you may have. We hope you plan a visit to our summer home this year.

About Ted Meleney

Ted and Kate have been coming to Martha's Vineyard all their lives and met on the Vineyard.

Ted Meleney purchased this cottage in 1972

Why Ted Meleney chose East Chop

Our house is in a wonderful location, away from traffic and the noise of downtown Oak Bluffs, but close enough to enjoy its benefits. Fully equipped and close to the beach and harbor, guests can enjoy the best of all worlds; the beach, walks, boating, birding, fishing, biking, the woods, and an upstairs water view. Older children can walk to the beaches by themselves.

What makes this cottage unique

With or without a vehicle, our house is convenient to ferries arriving in Oak Bluffs. You can walk from the boat to our house in about 15 minutes. Ride your bike in about 10 minutes, or drive in about 5 minutes. The house is a wonderful mix of modern and antique, comfortable for everyone and a return destination for generations of families. We hope you will love it.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We couldn't have asked for a more hospitable landlord. A great house, a great location, a perfect place for just the 2 of us and also for the surprise 30th anniversary celebration with friends and family this last weekend.

Tranquil environment close to Town

  • 5 of 5

Our family has been staying at this home away from home for eight summers. We love the seclusion of the house - yet the closeness to town and just steps from East Chop beach. Great location for walks along the bluffs in the morning and then back to the house for coffee on the sprawling back porch. Plenty of room for great dinners in the dinning room and a warming atmosphere by the fireplace on late Augusts cool evenings. Accomodations are great for friends and family to entertain. Mornings on the back porch and evening on the front porch. Just minutes to walk into Oak Bluffs - you won't miss a beat!

Owner's Response: Thanks your the review. We love the spot, too! Some things new for this year are a rowboat and a sunfish available down by the harbor. You need to bring your own PFDs (personal floatation devices), and boating and swimming skills. Ted

Great Stay

  • 5 of 5

We rented the house for a joint family vacation with my brother's family, including 6 adults (grandparents) and 4 kids. We were all very comfortable with plenty of space for everyone. My 7 year old daughter fell in love with the house the minute she saw the swing on the back porch. She also loved the idea of staying in a "Gingerbread Cottage" even though I explained that it had been moved and expanded. The owner was very helpful and responsive, even replacing the washer/dryer the day before we arrived. The location was excellent, Jetty Beach was a great family beach just across from the end of the road, and it was an easy walk into the center of Oak Bluffs.

Great Vineyard Family Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

Great place to spend a family vacation on the Vineyard. This is very convenient to Oak Bluffs as we always walked into town even with a 2 yr old. The close beach is small but really convenient and great for watching the boat traffic coming into the harbor. State Beach is a short bike or car trip away if you like long walks on the beach and no matter what time of day has available parking even in July /August. The house is spacious and the 2 decks provide great places to sit outside whether your a sun lover or a shade lover(me), you'll find a great place to relax. In the description of this house it says that it fully equiped and in my opinion it is definitely true(esp in the kitchen). Bring bikes-Martha's Vineyard is very bike accomodating with many dedicated bike/walking trails. When I return to the Vineyard I will definely look to see if this place is available.

Perfect Family Vacation Home

  • 5 of 5

My family loves this house. We've rented a number of different places

over the years but when we found this spot we knew we could stop looking. It is perfect; clean spacious, well equipped, close to town and peaceful. The kids love the back porch swing and the adults love to sit out there with their morning coffee and after beach cocktails. Jetty Beach at the end of the road(2 minute walk) is convenient or you can drive to any number of other beaches around the island. Each one is special in its own way.

We have enjoyed many family dinners and lively board games around the long dining room table. There is ample room for all of us without having to eat in shifts.

There are enough bedrooms to accommodate a large family. Pillows and blankets are provided. Each room has a fan although there is usually a breeze.

The house is close to the center of Oak Bluffs( about a ten minute walk) but so secluded and quiet you'd never know the town was so close.

We love it here and would recommend this house to others.

East Chop rental

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and some good friends have rented this house for several summers and have thoroughly enjoyed our time there. It was clean, spacious and light, with good hang out spots on both the front deck and back porch. The kitchen is very workable. The landlord was friendly and responsive. We particularly enjoyed being a very short walk to a great beach, and could also easily walk into town.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your review! The town's Jetty Beach and access to Oak Bluffs Harbor on the East Chop side is beautiful, and a lot of fun. There is also an osprey nest and a boat ramp nearby.

We rented this cottage for 2 years in a row , with the uipdated kitchen and amenities it was super for the 2 boat crews that stayed here. We had comfortable bedding and was nice having the half bath upstairs. The out door shower was a big hit as some of the crew never had taken an outdoor shower.
