THE BRUCE FAMILY INVITES YOU TO EXPERIENCE THE TIDES AT TENANTS HARBOR!

We are very excited to extend a warm invitation to you, your family and friends to enjoy our vacation home in Tenants Harbor, Maine. From the moment you drive down Mechanic Street and see the Harbor, the lobster and sailboats, Southern Island, and the Atlantic Ocean you will know you are someplace very special.

There is nothing quite like waking up in the morning to the sound of the lighthouse bell from Southern Island or lobstermen heading out to seize their day's bounty. You will enjoy both harbor and ocean views from our multiple decks while sipping a fresh cup of coffee with a cool morning breeze blowing. Maybe your day will include a local festival, crabbing with the kids off the town dock, a day sail and picnic on a coastal island, or maybe it is just relaxing in a chair on our lush lawn with a good book and taking in the harbor activity.

As the afternoon winds down your stomach will probably be craving something off those lobster and fishing boats you have been watching all day. You can enjoy a lobster or clam bake you prepare or head to one of the many local restaurants; either way we promise you will not be disappointed.

Whether you end the night with an ice cream cone from our favorite shop in Port Clyde or a game of Scrabble from our well-stocked game room - or both, you will sleep well for sure and the good news is you can get up and do it all again five more days! Please come and enjoy all Maine has to offer at our quintessential Maine cottage, The Tides at Tenants Harbor.

About Skye and David Bruce

We are David and Skye Bruce and we're here to help you navigate all the fun of Maine’s Mid-Coast. We are Virginians most of the year meaning we are “from away” as they say in Maine, but we spend a lot of time in Tenants Harbor. 2017 is the first summer we have rented the house in a number of years and we are thrilled to share it with you and your family and friends.

Skye grew up spending her summers here with her grandparents at a home they owned in the village and David fell in love with Maine when Skye brought him to "T' Harbor"! We own a real estate company back in Virginia and take a very professional approach with our guests.

Skye and David Bruce purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Skye and David Bruce chose Mid-Coast & Islands

How about that view! Some say it's the most beautiful in Maine and we don't argue! From our home you look out to the harbor and ocean. Most days there is a parade of lobster boats and yachts to view.

The island you see is Southern Island with the Tenants Harbor Lighthouse on the oceanside. The island is owned by the famous Wyeth family. (NC, Andrew, Jamie) Jamie Wyeth still spends a lot of time there painting in his studio.

On a walk one morning in 2007 from a home we were renting we saw this cottage for sale. The second we saw the view from the property we knew we would buy it. We have spent the last 10 years, updating, decorating and furnishing with Maine antiques, art and treasures. Our guests tell us its fun just to walk around the home and look! Our goal has been to keep that authentic Maine cottage feel to the home. We fix anything broken, keep it very clean, but don't over update. Example are some of our floors. We pulled carpet up to find wide plank pine floors. Instead of sanding and refinishing we left them as they were. Painted a classic Maine gray with the previous coat of red paint showing through. There is exposed brick in places, huge exposed beams on ceilings, cedar shake siding and many other classic architectural features. This is a very special property!

What makes this cottage unique

There is a special magic to Mid-Coast Maine that makes you happy to be alive! You see the magic at sunrise and through the sea-smoke as lobstermen head out for the day. You feel it on a boat as you leave Tenants Harbor, past the American flag on Mouse Island, the Lighthouse on Southern Island and as you look back to the mountains of Camden. You hear it in the call of a seagull, the sound of a buoy bell or the laughter of your kids crabbing off a dock. Part of the magic in Maine is the physical beauty, but just as important are the people of Maine and the culture. It’s walking into a General Store and seeing a sternman off a lobster boat, sitting with a renowned artist and a Supreme Court justice talking about the weather. There is an authenticity to Maine-- in her beauty, in her people and in her places. We think Maine is a place you have “to get”. Not all people do, but we sure are glad we do! Enjoy your Maine adventure! The way life should be!

Guestbook comments from the owner

David and I purchased this home in September 2006 - and have named it The Tides at Tenants Harbor- . It was formerly owned by The East Wind Inn and used as a multi-unit rental in conjunction with the Inn. We have put on a new roof, cleaned the siding, put in new floors, put in all new carpet, added new bedd, chairs and couches and put our decorating touch throughout. It is a home we have worked hard to prepare for the 2007 rental season - and we hope you will stay with us. Visit our rental website at

Wonderful, relaxing place.

  • 5 of 5

This place was one of those that you'd rather keep all to yourself! The house was great for 3 generations: enough room to be together when we wanted, and room to be apart as well. The kitchen, while not a gourmet chef's dream kitchen, was well equipped for preparing meals. (And the knives were sharp! A rarity in rentals!)

The house is filled with books, windows, and decks--a great place to just relax.

The location is perfect for what our group looks for in a Maine vacation: lovely harbor view (even when it was foggy), a nice restaurant next door and Luke's Lobster on the other side of that! Nice walks in town to the library , the general store, or to the town hall to visit St. George and the dragon. There's even a little rocky beach where our granddaughters, ages 4 and 8, would have been content to spend their entire time looking for shells and sea glass and throwing rocks in the water.

My brother started renting houses in Maine for at least one week each summer about 20. My family has been joining him for about 10 years now. This was one of the best.

Our week at The Tides at Tenants Harbor

  • 5 of 5

To celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary, our extended family rented The Tides for a week in June 2017. We had previously spent a week on the Oregon coast and wanted to experience a different coast. Two families traveled all the way from Salt Lake City and the third family traveled from Massachusetts. The house was perfect for our three families. Each had their own bedroom and bath. The common areas (kitchen, living room, etc.) worked well for us. We were invited to use the owner's kayaks, paddle board and rowboat. The large lawn area was ideal for playing lawn games and the back deck for viewing the harbor. (Unfortunately, the inn next door had a large tent set up for two weddings so our view of the harbor was limited.) We appreciated being able to contact the owners directly when we had any questions or issues. We were very pleased with our overall experience and would recommend The Tides as a very pleasant rental property.

Location, Location, Location!!!

  • 5 of 5

The Tides certainly lives up to the description of "breathtaking ocean views." We rented the house for a week with two other couples and every single one of us had the same reaction when we walked out onto the deck for the first time - "WOW!" We all quickly got into the habit of getting up early, grabbing a cup of coffee and heading out to the deck to watch the boats in the little harbor as they came and went, with the cocktail hour spent in the same manner. Throughout the entire week, none of us grew at all tired of just looking out over the perfectly manicured property to the water. At the entrance of the harbor is Andrew Wythe's island (his son, Jamie, evidently lives there now), and the one evening it was foggy the island seemed to appear and disappear repeatedly, a truly memorable sight. The house itself was immaculate, with so many charming personal touches that it felt much more like a real home than a rental property. The owner, Skye Bruce, was very pleasant and helpful. The location itself was perfect - one of our company enjoyed taking a short walk each morning to the Tenants Harbor General Store for the daily papers, several evenings we went next door to the East Wind Inn for a delicious dinner, and also found the Inn a wonderful place for breakfast (the blueberry pancakes are awesome). Thomaston was about 20 minutes away, Rockland about 25 minutes, and Port Clyde less than 15. Port Clyde has a fascinating general store where you can get everything from fresh-off-the-boat live lobsters to pizza, and a lovely gift shop upstairs. The Dip Net restaurant in back of the store was a favorite spot for lunch, and a great ice cream shop is just up the street. We were there early in June, and several of the restaurants that we had wanted to try didn't open until the middle of the month, but two that we would heartily recommend are the Craignair Inn in Spruce Head, which has great charm, and the Harpoon Restaurant between Tenants Harbor and Port Clyde (the bar there is lively, with peanut shells on the floor, and the separate dining room is decorated in a fun, eclectic manner with great food). The one issue which I feel should be mentioned is that the house does consist of several levels, and the stairs are all quite steep and narrow (although the owners have provided sturdy railings), and this could present a problem for anyone having mobility issues. Other than that, I would not only recommend The Tides, but hope to return in the future!
