Six Weeks at Crucian Seclusion
Spent all of March and half of April there. First time at this location after 15 years vacationing elsewhere on-island. Location is good from a "get to places both east and west" perspective, but is noisy from truck and ambulance traffic on close-in road. Apartment is part of a work in progress and will improve with time and some needed upgrades. No big negatives, few big positives. What you see is what you get. Pretty good value given the rental gold rush ongoing after Maria and with the refinery reopening. Suggest one priority should be addition of noise abatement greenery near road.
Funky, thrift-store atmosphere with little privacy
Cleanliness and privacy and are two basics for any sort of lodging, and this rental fell far short in both.
Out of 10 possible points for cleanliness, I would give this rental unit a 2. The curtains and shades (such as there were) were so grimy that I did not want to even touch them.
However, the bedroom had such serious gaps in covering the windows that we would have no privacy to get dressed/undressed! We had to rig up pillows and a sheet along with the filmy curtains and broken blinds provided so we could be unseen by neighbors or from the road. There was nothing left to make the kitchen and living room more private. We ourselves live in the country and keep our own back windows open to nature, but here we were open to being seen by the road traffic and other residents of the property, who tromped right by our windows day and night.
There were other problems. The stove buttons were so worn down that it was impossible to see which direction was high and which was low. In addition, the unit smelled unpleasant, like a mix of bug spray and dog funk. Nearly all the windows looked as if they had not been cleaned since last year's hurricane. The sheets were threadbare and the furniture was garage-sale quality. The upstairs residents stomped around very heavily until 10 at night and from 6 am on.
On the plus side, it was good to have a refrigerator, although the electricity went off twice during our brief stay.
I understand that the owner is trying to provide an inexpensive place to stay on the island while subsidizing his living expenses, but I do not think he should be renting this place out unless he can provide cleanliness and add window treatments that allow for privacy.
I'm absolutely heart broken that you had any issues with our place. We offer a multitude of amenities for the cost here. The power did go out twice briefly during your stay with us. This is not uncommon for our island as our power grid is not built to the same caliber as those are in the states. I'm sorry that you felt inconvenienced by this. Should the concern been brought to my attention, I would have happily put the generator on to make you comfortable.
I'll have to agree about the blinds. They are a bear to keep up on. The blinds are in the process of being illuminated and replaced with room darkening curtains. (waiting on shipment). We employ a professional cleaning crew for our units. There has not been a complaint before on their work. I will however be meeting with them per this review. Our home is a triplex with one unit upstairs and two units on the main level. Some noise from others should be expected but not consistently. We want all of our guests to be comfortable at Crucian Seclusion 1 & 2. Not one need, want or concern was brought to our attention during this stay. That being said, we address all questions, concerns compliments and complaints immediately when brought to our attention before, during and post stay.To anyone considering our place for your home away from home, please know that we encourage you to bring any concerns to us promptly. We strive to make you as comfortable as possible.
Short term rental
We stayed at Cruzan Seclusion for a short time. The owners, Kyle and Lisa are very nice and provide a binder of helpful information from restaurants to snorkel excursions. The one bedroom accommodation was adequate for what we needed.
Great place to stay
Had a good time, place was neat and tidy, owners are great
Close to Christiansted
Kyle and Lisa are great and very helpful. Washer/dryer in unit and everything you need to enjoy your stay.
Kyle and Lisa are two very amazing down to earth people!
This place was perfect for us and a short drive to the grocery store and Downtown Christiansted ... Kyle and Lisa and Tungsten were the most amazing hosts and had great suggestions on what to do and where to go. I can’t wait to go back down and stay with them again! Thank you for everything!
If I am coordinating a visit I would start with an island tour ( which I can provide if requested). Tour the Cruzan Rum distillery. Experience the beer drinking pigs at Norma's. Take a pedal kayak tour at sunset at Salt River, one of seven bioluminescent bays in the world. Take in a sunrise at Point Udall, the eastern most point in the United States. Check out the shops and art galleries in Christiansted town. Spend an evening on Christiansted boardwalk for dinner and rum. Then there's the beach! So many of them, and they are all public. Hike to the Carambola Tide Pools and of course, snorkel Buck Island. This is the only underwater national park in the U.S.
