This is the Hawaii you dream about! This little bungalow on the beach is an ideal tropical vacation destination for a couple or a family with children. It is the perfect island get-away for Honeymooners. The house and lanai open to expansive views of the beach, ocean and sunsets year round. The lawn and gardens are lush with native Hawaiian trees and plants including 15 coconut palms. Start your day sipping your morning coffee on your private lanai while watching for migrating whales (Dec - April) or spinner dolphins that make their home in the nearby Marine Sanctuary. Spend the rest of the day relaxing in the hammock in the shade of coconut palms or swimming with turtles, snorkeling or scuba diving in one of the best diving spots in Hawaii, the Puako reef, just in front of the hale. (You can read about it in guidebooks) A convenient entrance spot into the ocean is just a few yards walk south of Hale Malia. Children will enjoy hours of beach combing and exploring the tidepools. If you are tired of packing/ lugging your family to GO to the beach this is a good place for you - you ARE ON THE BEACH.

The "classic Hawaiian beach house" -style interior decor is tastefully designed by Fine Design Interiors of Waimea and featured in West Hawaii Today. Home features Mayumi Oda original art in the living room.

Beaches and Touring the sights of the Island: Puako is conveniently located for visiting the numerous sights of the Big Island from north to south. Numerous Beaches and resorts are within 5 - 20 minutes away from Hale Malia. Closest public beaches: '69' Beach in Waialea Bay (5 minutes) , Hapuna Beach (10 minutes) Driving times to some sights of interest: City of Refuge (south), 1 hr 45 min, Captain Cook/Kealakekukua Bay 1/1/2 hr, Kailua Kona 30 min, Kona airport, 25 min., Waimea 20 min., Hawi/ Waipio Valley 1 hour, Hilo/ Hawaiian TropicalBotanical Gardens 1 hr, Volcanoes Park, 1 1/2 hr.

Puako is also a great choice for vacations, because it boasts the highest number of sunny days (and the lowest annual rainfall) in the entire state of Hawaii. In fact, frequently it may be raining on the nearby beaches south of us and as you drive back to Puako it is all sunny and clear!!

Puako General Store: This market is a seven-minute walk from the house and is a gem. They usually offer freshly made lunch options to-go and have pasta, chicken and steak etc. and green vegetables and fruits to make a dinner and breakfast foods - so you do not need to leave Puako to shop for food. It is great when the vacation spirit strikes you and you do not feel like getting in the car! You can also order food and provisions in advance and pick it up when you drive-in.

Just wanted to let you both know how much we enjoyed all the new changes at Hale Malia. Luz (our almost 3yr old) was so excited to take a shower with "all the pretty dots on the floor." Another great and relaxing stay for us for sure. We'll wait to hear from you on the December dates.

Dining seating and options: The kitchen has a counter with 2 barstools for eating. For breakfast, lunch and dinner most people prefer to eat outdoors at the picnic table on the covered lanai with full ocean views.

All the convenience and joy

Our family with little kids stayed for one week. It was reasonably clean. Has all the supplies in terms of towels, sheets, a couple beach chairs, some beach toys etc. The cookware were sufficient for our one week's cooking need. Grocery price is noticeably higher anywhere except Costco. Make sure you kit Costco before you leave Kona, otherwise it's 2 hr round trip.

Bed was comfortable as far as full size bed goes.

The beach up front is not great for swimming but that's within description too, so that's no surprise. But the beach up front is surprisingly good for snorkeling. We even saw 4 large turtles sun bathing just two houses down. We only had to swim out like 20 feet there are already tons of fish to see.

Its great value for money. For the same period, a ocean front room in a resort 10 min. drive away would cost another 20%. Here we have a entire house and a large yard.

We spent lots of fun time swinging on the hammock and it's really good to have a fenced yard so kids can burn off some steam.

The owner and the local manager were both very easy to communicate and responsive to our requests.

Owner's Response: Thank you Tootoo for taking the time from your busy vacation to write a review for us. A few points I would like to elaborate on --the 2 mile long Puako Beach where our home is located has what we call "public access" points between certain houses which offer easy entry to the ocean for swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and scuba diving - that is where people access the renown Puako reef for "free of charge". You will see snorkel and dive boats from diving companies and nearby hotels anchoring there daily. The cost of those dive trips is in the $100's - from our home you can just swim to the reef and drop off anytime, free of charge. Our family also swims out there regularly- but it is not a sandy beach all the way to the water, like the nearby, 69 beach, Hapuna Beach or Mauna Kea beach. Sandy beaches do not have diving and snorkeling. Also just want to clarify -there is a convenient grocery store right in Puako and another one 15 minutes away in the Mauna Lani Resort intersection - but the prices are of course higher than Costco prices, so many people like to drive to Costco straight from the airport.

Wonderfully intimate Hawaiian setting

Spent the first six nights of our stay on the Big Island at this lovely vacation home. As told by some friends, this is a classic old school Hawaiian vacation cottage that is a gem. It is perfect for a couple. We spent most of our time in the home and grounds (mostly on the hammock). Great for morning coffees, breakfasts, reading, cocktails, dinners, sunsets, whale and turtle watching, and roaring surf. There's a general store nearby as well as a small beach where you can sun or snorkel. Highly recommended. We'll be back for sure.

Whale Watching Paradise

We must have at least 100 whales while sitting on the quiet lanai overlooking Puako Bay! What a treat! And the turtles.....OMG - they were everywhere! The quaint cottage was just enough for the 2 of us. Puako is a wonderfully quiet little neighborhood. We really enjoyed going to the two farmer's markets in Waimea - we got lots of fresh veggies, fruit, bread, and the view on the way was nice, too. The FoodMart in Waimea was great, too - just as far as driving to Waikaloa Village, not quite as pricey. Just remember to keep your food sealed or in the fridge, and your dishes clean or the ants will have their way! We had a wonderful time snorkeling on the Puako reef when the surf was calm, and also spent some time on 69 Beach, which had excellent snorkeling as well. All in all, the cottage was adequate, clean, and we were able to relax and unwind just as we had planned. Although we cooked at home for the most part, we did enjoy and would definitely recommend a trip to Hawi for lunch at Sushi Rock! It rocked! Aloha!

Simply Perfect

This was the perfect location for our family of 4 (two adults and two children ages 3 and 5) for our stay in October. The home was the perfect size and location for us. We loved exploring the tide pools just past the seawall every morning. Simply enjoying the ocean from the hammock each day was priceless and the best relaxation possible. It doesn't get any better. The home is located within just a few minutes to fantastic beaches like Hapuna, Mauna Kea, and Beach 69. The house is also well located for trips to Hawi, Kealakekua Bay and Kailua-Kona - all while enjoying the quaint peacefulness of Puako. We were very comfortable, loved eating outside each night and had everything we needed. We would without a doubt stay here again – and hopefully will in the future.

Unassuming place for two or very close small family

Main road through Puako is lined with HUGE multi-bedroom vacation palaces, while this cozy home sits 30 yards from the ocean on a huge piece of manicured lawn with shady palm trees. No A/C, but constant breeze from ocean and multiple fans keep one comfortable even in heat of day. Photos do little justice to how close you are to the ocean, and we did spot turtles daily from the lanai. Two day beds in living room could allow for a small family, but perfect for couple. Plenty of linens, walk-in shower, tasteful decorations, handy W/D. Some of the best sand beaches on Hawaii with terrific snorkeling are a mile or so away. Owners are helpful, and local handyman came by in person late at night to warn us of a Tsunami coming! Highly recommend for couple seeking serene, quiet, comfy place right on the ocean. Local market within walking distance down street, but restaurants and night-life will require a drive to a resort or local town (10 minutes to the north or south).
