Why Dave & Cindy Bakke chose Evans Churchill
Together we went on a 24 year journey of buying old buildings that no one cared about anymore & making them the jewel of the neighborhood. At one point, a Phoenix Neighborhood Policeman knocked on our door, & asked if WE HAD done all the lovely work on renewing our home, and he asked us to buy more of the blighted homes in the city. The Barbara Jean WAS NOT one of them..., we just found it driving around town & thought it was just a wonderful building. It was 'for sale'. And we had little hopes of purchasing it. A. military paycheck can only go so far. But the price was right & we felt blessed to be a part of the Barbara Jean's History. Only tortured-souls & starving artists lived at the Barbara at the time as the neighborhood was in a death spiral. At 5:00 p.m. Each day, the office workers in the area went home & the downtown area became once again blighted in a never ending daily turnstile of intensifying night-crimes area. By the morning, it would somehow begin to reorganize itself. To then cleanup for the fresh laundered office workers who would drive long routes to begin their downtown day, while beat patrol officers chased away the worn souls who'd used the wide city sidewalks as their home the night before. The cycle had to end, if not for the street humans who were at the mercy of a throng of stronger, younger crime seekers, but the decaying once majestic buildings being slowly left to linger & bleed in their past. We just knew the Barbara Jean had to be one of the ones that could pull out OK. The mansion building just to the West of the Barbara Jean had an arson fire. It caught Barbara Jean afire also in Feb. '97. She had moderate damage, but, as the mythological Phoenix Bird, managed to pull all her grace together & begin to shine in the light of City of Renewal Projects that were hastening & mushrooming In the area. Despite a few hiccups, the area is an art hub, bar scene, home to ASU.

Nicely decorated & this place had everything we needed.
You were perfect Guests, We were delighted to host such wonderful travelers. Thankyou for booking with us. Very kind, left the apartment clean. Excellent communicators. We would gladly host you again.
Clean, convenient, and comfortable
We spent four nights in the apartment which is conventionally located in downtown Phoenix within walking distance of many restaurants and activities. It’s comfortably furnished and we felt at home. The kitchen was well stocked with a variety of foods and beverages which was a pleasant surprise. The owners were accommodating and flexible. We will likely stay there again on our next visit.
Artsy with a lot of character
We loved this apartment. The owners were gracious hosts who were extremely welcoming and hospitable. The apartment was well supplied with all the essential foods, water, linens and toiletries.
The bed ( king size) was firm and comfortable.
At night it was very quiet and we enjoyed uninterrupted sleep.
The apartment is situated in the Roosevelt Arts and Cultural Districts. It is easy to walk to numerous restaurants, art galleries etc.
There is also easy access to the light rail which is fun to ride in order to explore neighbourhoods in Tempe and Mesa. With or without a car this is a fantastic location.
Charming delightful travelers who really appreciated our VRBO. They left our apt squeaky clean. They ARE the perfect guests!
We are truly grateful to guests as kind & gracious as they were. They kept us informed as to their arrival time & we simply could not ask for better guests.
Safe & Blessed traveling, my friends, & keep us informed on your further world adventures. You both are always welcomed back! Best regards—Your Hosts, Dave & Cindy
Location Location Location.
We opted for location over having a pool and we decided on this property. It was awesome. This place is vintage just as they describe, but people, it is really vintage so keep that in mind. It was a perfect ambiance for us and it was decorated adorably. But when I say vintage, I don't mean rickety. Just charming. There was so much food in the fridge that I thought maybe someone had forgotten to clean it out, but it was all for us. Coffee, water, snacks, deli, sweets, cereal and mild. On and on. The hosts were delightful and the location was perfect. The number of things within walking distance are too numerous to name, but I will say that there were 4 unique pub/bistro/watering hole places within one block. The light rail is a couple of blocks away and we used it with ease. Also, this place is one block off Roosevelt which is known for its graffiti and artwork on so, so many of the buildings. Just really special. We would definitely stay here again.
Glad you two adventurers were able to enjoy Baseball opening Day easily from our location. The grass isn’t likely to grow under these two high spirited, zest-for-life lovely duo: was thrilled that you recognized our terrific location and rode the close-in EZ light rail. The EZ walkable-within-a-few minutes...themed pubs, brewski huts, niche eateries & mucho coffee hubs were placed there strategically for our guests as appreciative as you! As were the Museums, public street art, live legitimate theater hubs ie Herberger, Orpheum etc., center city Hance Park, ASU Downtown, music venues inc Crescent Ballroom, Van Buren, The Nash etc. Phx Convention Center. Plus ASU Downtown & Phx Downtown Business Sector has attracted any venue that can team up with a wine/brew-enhancement bump such as Filmbar, Arcade BAR & more. If you two didn’t get the chance to see/be a part of ALL the crazy lively Events our location offered... time to start planning for next time. The new restaurant coming next door to our location has a December 2018 projected opening: yes, we are getting your Phx VRBO-to-restaurant time down to 30 seconds. You are welcome!
5 stars! The apartment is very clean, comfortable and charming! It is very well stocked and the owners are very generous and kind. We will definitely stay here again.
Great location to restaurants and events downtown and less than 30 minutes to anywhere in the metropolitan area. The property was clean and comfortable and stocked with lots of goodies.
Remember, Phx has a very active art scene & Roosevelt Row is the HOME of downtown arts, bars, culture, ASU, Dowgntown professional NBA Suns & Diamondback Baseball Teams
