Perfect location; a lovely place to return "home to" after exploring SMA

  • 5 of 5

We (four 70 + year old women who LOVE traveling) just returned from SMA, having spent 8 glorious days at Casa Romantica.

All of the lovely indoor and outdoor spaces at Casa Romantica gave us a true feeling of really being "away". We were captivated by the charm of our home away from home, and the magic of San Miguel de Allende!

The owner's collection of local crafts and artwork is stunning. The lush gardens afforded us space, privacy and beauty, while the sunsets from the upper terraces were staggeringly beautiful. We might not have been able to walk up and down SMA's cobbled streets as fast as younger guests, but on the other hand, we managed to explore the entire Centro area and especially loved happening upon wedding parades and other fiestas in the streets.

The weather was PERFECT - sunny - mid 70's during the day, and cool enough to appreciate down comforters at night.

We were glad we took a day trip to Guanajuato. Other highlights: seeing/hearing guitarist Gil Guiterrez and his band at Casa Mia (at the Instituto de Allende) and visiting the Mask Museum.

Irina's restaurant suggestions were spot on - and Luz, the Housekeeper, made us feel so welcome and comfortable. We loved her beautiful smile, her friendliness and attention to detail, and her fabulous home-cooked dinner. It was a privilege to get to know Luz. It was very hard to say goodbye to her and to Casa Romantica!

Great place!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at Casa Romantica for a month, being taken care of by Luz, The Magnificent, who cleaned, did laundry, cooked and left us the recipe. This three bedroom home, surrounding a lovely courtyard with great places to sit and a lime tree for your own margaritas, was perfect for the two of us. Take into account a spiral staircase to get to the upstairs living floor (not a problem for us). Centrally located with no more than a 10 minute walk to most things (Jardin, Instituto, farmers' market). Quiet, comfortable bed, wonderful art everywhere. The host was extremely available by email, offering tips and suggestions as needed. We would definitely go back - and would have next year but the dates don't quite work.

We just spent 10 wonderful days at Casa Romantica.

We rented the entire house as we met our adult son there for vacation, having the separate casita for him worked perfectly. The fact that you can enter the main house from the outside staircase in the beautiful garden was perfect.

Luz, the housekeeper was great, she was there Mon-Fri, doing our laundry, cleaning house and even cooked an amazing dinner for us one night.

The views from the terraces are spectacular from the early morning hot air balloons to the beautiful nighttime views of the Cathedral.

Irina, the owner, sent us a detailed list of restaurants, all of which were excellent.

Loved the tapas bar just a few steps from the house.

All in all, a great stay, I would highly recommend staying at Casa Romantica.

Beautiful architecture, gardens, light and views close to el centro

  • 5 of 5

We have spent the last 2 February vacations in this beautiful house. We have loved it from our first introduction. Entering through the older casita on the street level, you open the wrought iron gates and you are in paradise. Greeted by flowers, lemon trees and a fountain, you see three levels of gardens, each with its own chairs and tables art and arches. Our favorite room of this multi-level house (built about 25 years ago) is the living room and its 2 terraces on the upper level. Being upstairs, the room is full of sunlight . From the windows and terraces, incredibly beautiful views of the parochia and the town. In the early morning, we love seeing the hot air balloons (with colors to match the town) floating above, and at dusk, the sunset as the sky turns its colors over the distant purple mountains. And at night we see the moon and the lights of the town. The living room is large with carefully chosen art and crafts from Mexico, sitting areas and a gas fireplace for cooler mornings. At night the indirect light gives a glow to the room.

The bedroom on the 2nd floor has a comfotable bed, lovely linens and a tub in its bathroom. (each of the 3 bathrooms have tubs). The bedroom has lovely views of the gardens.

Another wonderful aspect of the house is Luz, the housekeeper here for 21 years. She keeps the house and gardens beautifully , teaches us Spanish, and has become mi amiga mexicana. She helps me to feel part of the culture. Luz and her family live next door. I love the neighborhood, a mixture of friendly Mexicans and ex-pats. There are 3 tiendas on the small, quiet street and a neighborhoid bar/restaurant on the corner. The neighborhood is very safe.

The jardin (el centro) is a 10-15 minute walk downhill. I return via Hospicio (not so steep), Baranca to Huertas. And taxis are $3.50 USD.

Irena, the owner, has created this exquisite property reflecting her understanding of Mexico, her interest in art and architecture, light and color. She is very thoughtful and helpful. I have taken dozens of photos of the house, its angles, views , flowers and art. It complements beautiful San Miguel de Allende, and we love staying here.

Peaceful Retreat close to Centro

  • 5 of 5

Our family just returned from a wonderful 6 days at Casa Romantica. We rented the entire house, including the front casita and honestly did not want to leave. The reasons for this rave review are numerous but what stands out the most is the beauty and tranquility of this Spanish-style villa. With gardens and terraces on each level, there were many places to relax, read and soak up the winter sun. The hummingbirds often visited the terraces to drink from many of the blooming flowers. Yes, this was true even in January!

The house was very well kept (Gracias Luz!) with comfortable furniture to lounge on. There were plenty of plates, cups, pots and pans to cook with. The artwork in the house included numerous large and beautiful paintings, Mexican folk art, sculptures etc...

The owner, Irina, was available by phone and email before and during our stay. If I was not able to get ahold of Luz, the housekeeper to answer questions, I called Irina. She is so personable and very helpful, suggesting restaurants and other places of interest.

The location of this beautiful home could not be better. It is in located just a short walk from the center. There is much to see and do around the house, yet it is also quiet and relaxing.

My husband had to work during our stay and brought his computer and phone to use his vonage account. The internet at the house was fast and reliable.

I would highly recommend this house for both a short or long stay. We have two girls ages 7 and 10 who loved the house as much as we did. We are planning on coming back to San Miguel next year for an extended stay. As soon as we have dates we will be sure to call Irina to see if the house is available. Thanks Irina for opening up your home to us!

Very pleasant house with terrific outdoor areas

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I and two friends stayed in this pretty art-filled, house for three weeks. There was more than enough room for four adults to sleep comfortably and enjoy their privacy. The beds were comfortable with high quality linens. The housekeeper Luz is a jewel, very kind and helpful. She took very good care of us and even invited us to her daughter's wedding at the beautiful Atotonilco church which was a wonderful cross cultural experience for us. There is more outdoor space than we could find time to utilize with fine views, many pretty plants and flowers, a bubbling fountain and a fantastic variety of birds. If you get up early enough you can watch the hot air balloons float over the town. The house is in a very nice, friendly, mixed neighborhood and the walk into Centro is downhill about ten minutes. The walk back is definitely uphill. If you don't like to walk, taxis are plentiful and cheap. There are many good restaurants and shops within walking distance. We would for sure rent this house again.
