About Jane & Peter
Jane & Peter split their time between France and the coast of Maine (north-eastern USA). In La Boissonnie, we live in the old 'épicerie' (grocer's shop) and are enjoying converting an adjoining barn into extended living space. Jane is a French teacher and has lived in Paris and Belgium, in addition to (now) Limousin. Peter, who grew up in Somerset, England, is an environmental scientist (& part-time musician). Between the two of us, we are fluent in French & Spanish (also English...). We also owned / operated a hotel for a number of years, which on the whole was fun.
Jane & Peter purchased this Cottage in 2012
Why Jane & Peter chose Champagnac-la-Rivière
After vacationing over the years in different parts of France, we settled on the Haute Vienne because of its peaceful, verdant, scenery. Also, La Boissonnie is a very convenient centre for visiting a wonderful array of other locations, not only in Limousin, but also over the border in Dordogne.
What makes this Cottage unique
La Boissonnie is the typical Limousin hamlet that we were searching for - with winding lanes, plenty of peace and characterful French neighbours. There are some wonderful walks, readily accessible right from the cottage, and plenty of interesting sites within easy reach. And, while sitting in back garden enjoying a glass of wine of an evening, the stars are brighter here than anywhere else we have lived (which says quite a lot!).

Wonderful Gite in a delightful rural setting.
Had a very enjoyable stay in the lovely village of Champagnac-la-Riviere. Jane and Peter's Gite provided us with a wonderful base for exploring the Limousan region. The accommodation was more than adequate and contained all of the home comforts one could hope for. It is a tastefully presented property, true to the authentic style of the charming local area. We were particularly pleased that the accommodation is pooch friendly and that the local roads are so quiet that we felt very secure about Olly's safety when walking him even off a lead.
Peter and Jane were very pleasant and helpful hosts and the fact that they live in the adjacent property meant that we were able to avail of their willing help and support during our stay.
We would certainly recommend this lovely Gite and would love to stay there again ourselves if ever we return to the area.
Merci bien, Jane and Peter!
Very pleasant and relaxing.
Comfortable and pleasant space for our cycling holiday. The house was nice and cool during the very hot weather during our stay. Jane and Peter were the perfect owners living close by and helpful with advice about the area whilst discreet in allowing our privacy.
We had a great time.
Joan & Ben were excellent guests! We are glad that they enjoyed the cottage, the garden and the great outdoors. They would be welcome back here at any time.
Superb stone cottage, full of character, very clean, well equipped and comfortable holiday home. Jane and Peter were very helpful and welcoming, they’d even thoughtfully provided us with a lovely bottle of wine.
We will definitely be returning as we love this area and this is the perfect place to stay.
Laura & Norman were excellent guests - and we would be happy to welcome them back to stay in La Boissonnie, perhaps as part of another house-hunting trip!
We needed somewhere to stay with a ground floor bedroom and bathroom as we were taking an elderly parent who couldn't use stairs due to mobility problems. This was perfect for what we needed. A lovely gite with all amenities we required. The owners were very friendly and helpful throughout our stay. A great position in a quiet hamlet for us to go site seeing. Would recommend it to anyone as an enjoyable place to stay. Thank you Peter and Jane.
Lee & family were excellent guests and we very much enjoyed having them stay with us. We are glad that they found our cottage so convenient and "user-friendly"!
A lovely cosy but spacious stone cottage with wonderful character, it had everything we needed, was lovely and clean and an absolutely amazing, peaceful and beautiful location. Anyone looking for some sanity this is definitely the place to go.
Peter recommended a couple of local restaurants which we tried and were very happy with, the food and service were impeccable, Peter we will never forget Dave such a communicative guy :)
Due to French air strikes our flight was cancelled and we couldn't get home for another 3 days however; this wasn't a problem as the owners allowed us to remain in the cottage for the duration of our stay.
Thank you so much Peter for the wine! your continuous help and your understanding with our issues, we look forward to meeting you again in the future.
Pam & Kev
Pamela & family were great guests. We are glad that they enjoyed our cottage and the neighbourhood. AND that they got on well with their house search! Looking forward to seeing you again!
Charming little cottage.
The stay was enjoyable. The Gite was well furnished and well equipped to cater for our needs. I had no negative points to report. The hosts, Peter and Jane, are very nice people who were very approachable and did everything to make us feel welcomed. Would I re book again? Yes very much so.
Eamonn and family were excellent guests; we are glad that our cottage in La Boissonnie served them as a good base for house-hunting in this region. We look forward to being able to welcome them back here during a future visit to this region of the Limousin!
La Boissonnie is in the middle of the beautiful countryside of the Parc Naturel Perigord-Limousin, with its rolling hills, fields, forests and many quaint, delightful, historic towns and villages. To explore this scenery, there is a rich network of walking trails and quiet roads. This network includes the Voie Vert (a converted railway line, running 13 km from Chalus to Oradour sur Vayres), just 3 km from our property. Here you can jog, bike, walk or roller-blade along a flat, well-paved surface. Bicycles, quadricycles and roller-blades are all available for rent at the visitors' centre.
In La Boissonnie, you can buy fresh bread and pastries from the local baker's delivery van that stops right outside our cottage on weekdays. A grocer's van - with fresh produce and an amazing variety of other foods - makes weekly stops, again right by the cottage. Supermarkets are within easy reach, in 3 small towns between 5-15 minutes away.
A few minutes away is the Saint Mathieu lake and park - a very nice place for swimming, mini-golf, picnics and taking it easy on hot summer days.
Several chateaux are within easy reach, including Montbrun (with its inviting, cosy tavern, a short 7 km away), Chalus (with its chateau where Richard the Lionheart met his demise in 1199; 7 km), Rochechouart (stunning chateau, containing a modern art museum; 21 km), Chalucet (restored ruins set among densely wooded hills; 45 km), and Coussac-Bonneville (48 km). The 'martyr village', Oradour sur Glane is less than an hour away, as is Brantome - known as the 'Venice of Perigord'. Brantome Abbey, founded by Charlemagne, reportedly has the oldest bell tower in France and offers notable concerts during the summer and autumn. Limoges, with its medieval streets lined by 'tudor' buildings, is wonderful for exploring on-foot (47 km away). Large, modern shopping centres are available in Limoges - also in St. Junien (32 km). The Grotte (caves) de Villar, with several cave paintings, are also an easy drive from La Boissonnie (36 km).
