Ask a questionAbout Jeffrey Thurlow
My name is Jeffrey Thurlow and I grew up in Pine Point and experienced the same heritage generations of my family have for decades. Lobstering and clamming, spending countless hours and days on the ocean and beautiful beaches, fishing and crabbing, and all the wonderful things children do at the beach. My family started the Clambake Restaurant many years ago as a small seafood restaurant and all of the family would participate. I loved to dig clams and haul lobster traps with my dad and help to supply the restaurant and my grandfather's fish market, Pine Point Seafood. We lived for the summers and I was so fortunate to be able to secure this wonderful piece of my families history so that my sons could grow up making the same memories that we all did. Eventually we all grow up and find our destiny. I chose medicine and left Pine Point for a long time to study, eventually becoming a general, critical care and trauma surgeon following training at Duke, the University of Vermont and the medical centers in Boston. Throughout these years of study and training, I kept my dream of returning to Pine Point to be closer to my family. My parents, brothers, cousins and friends congregate at my cottage on the harbor and we all have the same deep connection to its beauty and value to the generations of Googins and Thurlow's who have lived their entire lives in this small fishing village. The most honest, hard-working, hearty people you will ever meet lived in Pine Point, and while the landscape has changed and the 'Point' is no longer the place of yesteryear, it is still special to so many people who come every summer or choose to live year round. I am proud to be a "Pine Pointer" and honored to be able to maintain my families heritage in its land for years to come. Life is busy and I don't spend as much time as I would like there, so I have chosen to share it with others. It has been fun for me to host family events, reunions and weddings and see others enjoy this special place!
Why Jeffrey Thurlow chose Pine Point
Stella Googins was the matriarch of Pine Point. The Googins family is represented by my grandmother Beatrice (Betty or "Bet" to all who loved her, and many many did) who married Donald Thurlow (Gramp). A large family, the Googins were much of the population of Pine Point. My grandparents were incredible people and their home on Jones Creek Drive was the center of Pine Point if that is defined by visitations! Bet's front porch and famous cooking brought the entire "Point" to her beloved "Sun Parlor" which was the enclosed porch that was all windows. Many hours were spent there talking, laughing, singing, debating and there was no happier place on earth. My grandparents raised four boys in that small house as did my great-great aunt Stella Googins in the cottage that I own today. She passed 20 years ago and that whole generation is gone now, but their impact on all of us is enduring. Stella's son, Don, lived next door to her his whole life right next to the lobster pound. He offered the family the first opportunity to acquire the Googins Homestead and I was delighted to have it and a piece of Pine Point. It was bittersweet to have to renovate it but it was well over 100 years old. The overgrown lilac bushes allowed for virtually no view of the river or harbor and the seawall was made up of railroad ties set into the beach sand and had lasted for decades protecting the homes. To protect the harbor from the decaying creosote from the railroad ties, I replaced them with a seawall and the glorious view opened up so that the magical sunsets can be viewed in slow motion which has always been the highlight of the summer day. Mount Washington can be seen on the horizon and truly looks like the purple mountain majesty described in that great song. Incoming and outgoing tides, clam flats, shore birds, striped bass in our backyard, respectful seagulls, exciting squalls and thundershowers, cool ocean breezes on the hottest of days, all make this a piece of heaven!
What makes this House unique
Location, location, location. While you have seven miles of perfect beach literally across the street to enjoy, you also have the privacy of our own sandy beach right in front to watch the kids play on without any worry about their safety in the ocean. We have low tide during which they can explore the clam flats, dig for sea worms to go fishing later, catch little green crabs and then the high tide where the water is warmer to swim in and safe from strong currents. Kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding, wind-surfing could not be more perfect in this location as there are miles and acres of the Scarborough, Nonesuch, and Libby rivers and marsh land to explore. Pine Point is a working port and local lobstermen are working right on the pier where you can get something to eat at the Rising Tide Restaurant at the "Poop Deck." Bayleys Lobster pound is right around the corner to supply you with the freshest of seafood. They will cook your lobsters to have them hot for dinner on our large deck at the appointed time. Grills are there for grilling, and everything is there for creating and enjoying the special meals. Proximity to the fun stuff for kids is important as well. Every child needs to go to Old Orchard Beach for the amusements and rides and every adult needs to try Bill's Pizza and Pier French Fries. People-watching is great fun or being the people others watch can be even more fun! There are bars and restaurants, and karaoke and shops and ice cream and the famous Pier which juts out into the Atlantic and is pretty cool! Funtown and Splashtown are a few miles away and Portland's Old Port District is a wonderful adventure. There's a lot to do on a summer vacation in Maine, but I suspect you won't leave Harborwinds Cottage very often. It is cozy, meticulously clean and well-equipped for your time there. Enjoy every minute! Make memories and come back year to year as a tradition.
