If you haven't been to Boulder, Colorado you're in for a treat. Voted best small city in America for decades, it has everything you want from a big city, with world-class restaurants, a major university and an abundance of cultural events, but feels like a town.
Our rustic and private spacious home is 6 miles up Beautiful Sunshine Canyon, just minutes from Pearl Street Mall in Downtown Boulder. We have incredible views while in the forest. Boulder has fantastic weather all year round to play golf, hike the foothills, stroll the streets, see a sporting event or just relax without the disturbances of a hotel.
Our 3500 sq ft home is a great family home, perfect for 2 families, fun for kids (pool table) or a great romantic getaway. It's fully equipped with everything you may need or want, with great views from every window and often have deer strolling or napping in our yard. There's a garage for your convenience and a large deck with outdoor hot tub.
We love our home and think you will as well. It can be your home away from home while visiting beautiful Boulder, Colorado. Enjoy!

About David McLaughlin
A small cabin was built here in 1972 but we did a major addition in 2004 to fit our family needs. We raised to kids here in the mountains. It's a great family house and we love the Boulder vibe. Steve Lavington is the owner and David does the bookings, we call it Team Sunshine as you have both of us to ask questions or for suggestions. Steve lives in a cabin near the main house and is available to help out with any needs guests may have.
David McLaughlin purchased this House in 2004
Why David McLaughlin chose Boulder
We love being in the mountains surrounded by pine trees yet we're close to downtown Boulder so it's convenient to get into town. It stays cooler in the summer and we get more snow in the winter but the roads are maintained making it easy to reach.
What makes this House unique
We have the largest vacation rental in the Boulder area, perfect for families and groups. It sleeps 15 in main house. Perfectly nestled between busy Boulder and super chill Gold Hill. We continually make updates in the home. In 2017, we laid new carpet, new floors and new upholstery. We are totally available to answer any questions before booking or after you arrive.

Great House with amazing views!
House was everything we hoped it would be and more! David was available when we needed him. The views from the common rooms were great, and the house was very spacious! Backyard with the hot tub was very welcoming! Would definitely stay again!
Great space, lots of room, excellent location.
Our family and extended family stayed here over Christmas. The house comfortably held all 12 of us, kitchen is nicely stocked, everything was as advertised. David and Steve (owner) are super easy to work with and quick to respond. I highly recommend this property!
Thank you for your review Jeff! We enjoy working with easy going guests like you and your family!!! Hope to see you all some other time, thanks again, David
Sunshine House is a rustic lodge nestled in a lovely canyon with spectacular sunrises, wildflowers, turkeys and deer. The historic Schoolhouse and bell are visible from the deck. The house is close to summer activities, including white water rafting, hiking, gold panning and shopping. The Wild Animal Sanctuary is awesome!
The house is quite comfortable for a large group to lounge, play pool or watch a video. The grill works great. The deck and furniture are in desperate need of repair. We banged nails to make it safer and there are no railings for kids. We never used the hot tub, concerned about the green color.
The kitchen is well equipped with tools, pans and dishes. The microwave and inoperable food processor were repaired with duct tape. The waste disposal emitted a terrible odor under the sink.
There were plumbing issues. One toilet did not flush and a crescent wrench was used to operate a shower. We never used the laundry area beds due to the moldy smell.
Overall, as seasoned VRBO renters, we were disappointed in the condition of Sunshine House.
However, because of the unique character and location, we would consider another visit given assurances that repairs had been made.
Here's the response from the owner Steve.
I am glad to hear that your very large group had a great stay at the Sunshine house. With regard to your repair recommendations and other concerns I would like to respond that the furniture has been re-upholstered, the deck has been repaired – with the use of deck screws rather than nails ( our previous guests consisted of some 15 people with 8 or so 10 -14 year olds that gave it quite the beating) and an additional rail run of 6 feet where it drops 12 inches to a garden has been added. As for the toilet – someone had simply wiggled the chain off during your stay, the shower faucet has been replaced as again the previous guests had bent the shower lift.
The hot tub is professionally maintained and cleaned after each set of guests, the green hue is not a function of the water rather the tub itself- the green tub light and blue tile along with the green and blue night flood lights contribute further to that – needless to say the water cleanliness and balance are maintained.
Regarding the smell emanating from the disposal – it was not the disposal rather a deceased chipmunk that snuck in during your stay (the house directions and information warn to be vigilant regarding doors being left open and sneaky chipmunks.
Regarding the Microwave handle (again broken by previous guests was epoxied and works fine –not justifying to be sent to a landfill . Not sure about the food processor as I do not have one, and the parts that inadvertently were stored in a cupboard have been removed.
Regarding the lower loft, a vent fan has been added and the washer dryer area and more explicit directions on laundry use – previous guests had overloaded and in turn water somehow spilled.
All in all your concerns have been corrected – for the next summer we will additionally insure no same day turn around so as to allow necessary maintenance between guests as needed.
Lastly, I was a bit surprised to hear there were any issues since I was in the cabin nearby and could have addressed any issues when they came up but I never heard from anyone?
Thank you Steve and me as the one who makes the bookings will make sure there are no more turn dates!!!
Midwestern Folk visiting the Mountians
What a great stay! The house and deck facilitated a great atmosphere for social interaction. I would recommend this property and looking forward to coming back. Also, Golden Hill Inn is a must for dinner when you are staying here.
Thank you for your review Matthew, we really appreciate it! Yes, Gold Hill is a great little town just up the road from us and the Inn is a historic place worthy of a visit. Thanks again and safe cycling to you, David
What a great place!
We rented this place over Thanksgiving and had our family plus our in laws stay and we fit nicely (15 plus a baby). The bedrooms are spread out so we could put the early risers (and baby) in one wing and the late sleepers in another and not bother anyone! We made our entire thanksgiving feast (and pies from scratch) in the well equipped kitchen without any trouble- we had to purchase a mixer to use but everything else was already there for us. We loved the private, low traffic road as we walked the neighborhood/valley every day. It was great for the baby who toddled along beside us all- very safe, friendly area. We drove up the valley (2 minutes) and hiked the mountain, drove down the valley (4 minutes) and hiked Bald Mountain, explored Boulder and Estes Park and loved watching the wildlife all over the property. The boys loved scoping Mule Deer from the living room window, coffee cup in hand. We all (the baby especially) loved seeing the neighborhood Fox leaving his den every morning. The hot tub was nice too- decent condition but not very big (the 2 year old could stand up in it), maybe 3/4 adults could fit although we never tried. All in all we had a great time. The house itself is showing some wear (refrigerator leaks, microwave handle is broken, pool table is a little rough, overall needs a little spruce up) but it was such a great place to be it was easy for us to overlook those few silly things. It's got fabulous views, is centrally located and is a fun place to explore. We had a blast.
Great Location for a Family Reunion!
We held our week long 3rd annual family reunion at the wonderful Sunshine House. Our clan totaled 13. The house is spacious, allowing room for guests to spread out or to gather in central rooms. The kitchen is well furnished and open, spilling out onto a large rear deck which was ideal for summer evening meals. The Weber grill was ideal for a cookout. Musical instruments (bass guitar, guitar and hand drums) were a wonderful added feature for this musically inclined family. The house is located roughly 20 minutes outside of Boulder up a scenic canyon road. This allowed for plenty of outdoor space and convenient access to downtown Boulder. Our favorite activities: lots of hiking, Pearl Street Mall, tubing down the Boulder Creek, visiting the Boulder reservoir on a hot summer day, savoring flavors at the Tearoom, buying fresh produce at the Farmer's Market, sampling fine microbrews at Avery Brewing and just in general falling in love with Boulder. The house was absolutely great with a couple of minor items needing attention: pool table, refrigerator door, occasionally spotty Wi-Fi and a slightly musty laundry room/bedroom.
Hi David and Jane, thank you so much for your review. We are really glad you enjoyed yourselves at The Sunshine House. Yes, Boulder is an amazing town and the house is great because it's so close to town but you are in the mountains.
We always want guests to call if they have any questions, concerns or want suggestions for anything about our house or the surrounding area. We can usually get any questions answered right then and there like the pool table is fine but if people sit or put a lot of weight on the rails they will push down but they pop right back up and are fully functional. Also, the house has two wifi's because of how big it is so possibly you were using the right one that is set up on the left side of the house or vice versa? Again, we always want people to call and ask. The fridge door does work and in the welcome letter it talks about if opening both fridge and freezer, close freezer first so fridge door closes tight. The lower loft where the washer and dryer is doesn't have windows so it stays more at ground temperature and there is a fan to help the circulation of the air. It's definitely not as bright and sunny as the rest of the house. Thank you again and much appreciated, all the best, David
The Sunshine House is a close 15 minute drive to Gold Hill Inn which has great live music and food!!! Rocky Mountain National Park is about 45 minutes to an hour and a super scenic drive. Chautauqua is a wonderful music hall and restaurant about 20 minutes away.
