This property has been in our family since 1963. When my father first found the parcel, there was simply a sign at the end of the drive that asked, "Like it?" He did. As an avid birdwatcher in his day, he loved the dozens of species to be seen while exploring all acres. Not to mention the water activities just steps from the beautiful deck. The property is nestled beside an old trestle that is part of the New River Trail State Park - a 57 mile rails-to-trails hiking and biking trail along the water in the beautiful blue ridge mountains. Being adjacent to this trail is a big advantage of this property. There is complete privacy, and a path directly to the New River Trail. Access to the lake is as easy as it gets because the land is flat with no hills or steep steps to navigate down to the dock. We offer kayaks, paddle boards, floats, a john boat, life jackets, and an Aquaglide (large inflatable trampoline for the kids on the water).
Enjoy the beauty of the water, mountains, sunrises, and birds in this private setting just 6 minutes from Interstate 81. Two of the most important characteristics to consider when looking at Claytor Lake properties are how far it is from I-81, and how easy it is to get to the water from the house. This property is premium in both regards. Claytor Lake is not a huge lake and the area where our home is enjoys very little boat traffic. This is considered the best water skiing area on the lake. Relax, enjoy water sports, fish, kayak, paddle board, watch ospreys and eagles, bike or walk the trail, play golf on several top-notch courses close by, or drive to Virginia Tech in about 40 minutes. You can relax in the hot tub at the end of the day and watch the moon rise over the mountains.
Our home is large and open, comfortably accommodating several family members. We have two master bedroom suites available. The rental part of the home is separate from the innkeeper's (owner's) suite, though this area may soon be available for rent as well. The current section available for rent includes 4 Br, 3 1/2 BA, kitchen, living room, sun room, deck area, and all areas on the dock. The innkeeper's suite is in the back of the home with its own entry. We are generally away from home during the week from early morning until late evening and around most weekends. We can maintain our normal schedule and be around to help with anything you may need, or we can be away while you are renting our home, your choice. If your vacation plan includes water sports, we can offer our wakeboard boat, driven by the owner, for tubing, skiing, wakeboarding, or surfing. My husband has taught hundreds of kids and adults to wakeboard, ski, and surf, and could work with your family to teach proper techniques so you can get up quickly and enjoy riding. Talk to us about securing this service for an additional fee. We do not allow pets in the home, but we do have two loving cats and a small friendly dog roaming the property, and able to go into a pet room in our section of the home. You can let us know your desire about our pets also, if you wish to have them around or not around during your stay.
Scroll through the pictures and imagine yourself enjoying every inch of this property whether you're in town for a family getaway or looking for a special place to catch up with friends on a weekend trip to Virginia Tech or Radford University. We have used our home to host friends and family for many years and all of them consider it such a relaxing and fun place to visit. You can make some memories in this beautiful setting. So much to see, so much to do. This is a retreat all year around. Spring/Summer is obviously an awesome time here, but the fall is absolutely beautiful (great place to stay for Hokie Football games). Winter offers some magnificent views and is a great time to walk or ride the New River Trail. There are wonderful restaurants close by - Draper Mercantile (less than 5 minutes, right on the New River Trail), and Al's on First (downtown Pulaski). Draper Mercantile also includes the Village Shops. Several top-notch golf courses within a 40 minute drive. The minor league Pulaski Yankees play in historic Calfee Park in Pulaski during the months of July and August. You will see some of the most beautiful sunrises you have ever seen. Come and stay and enjoy the beauty of Claytor Lake.
