Overview

About the property

ARTIST-OWNED, ART-FILLED ADULT ORIENTED PROPERTY. 3 NIGHT MIN., PRICE VARIES

CLASSIC DOOR COUNTY YEAR- ROUND ARTIST'S HOME.

Wonderful, private winter wonderland; cross country ski right out the door!

This totally private, four-acre, wooded lot is the site of this fabulous year-round home. Please note that the new address is 1423 Dragonfly Lane, not Central Rd. Originally a Norwegian barn, this home has been reconstructed and added onto, resulting in a total of three bedrooms and two baths and another separate suite with bath. Owner is an artist and she has an art library and large suite suitable for painting and drawing. Serious scholars bring their manuscripts up here; good friends love to congregate here, finding the location a good mix of art galleries and restaurants, with outstanding quiet nights for great sleeping. Yogis tell me they find the spaces excellent for practicing and meditating.

Within one mile to The unique Pioneer Store, where you will find anything you have forgotten to bring!

Bicyclists will love the short jaunts to beaches; hardier bicyclists will love the hilly, longer routes!

Due to excessive wear and tear on the house by children, owner has decided to limit the house to 8 adult guests. There are MANY houses available to families; sadly, my house has sustained too much damage.

About PAT WHYTE

As a young girl, I loved property; any kind of property, vacant land or tiny cottage. I grew up to be an artist, mother and eventually a real estate agent specializing in distinctive properties.

PAT WHYTE purchased this house in 1999

Why PAT WHYTE chose Door County

This home appealed to me immediately due to its site: the White Pines, the orientation to the sun, the circular drive. It seems to have always been in the back of my imagination; it was love at first sight despite having many structural drawbacks. (I remedied the structural problems!)

What makes this house unique

Screened in porches really appeal to me, and this one has a porch suitable for 8 chairs/gliders and a table. I can watch deer saunter through the field, see the little ears of fox as they pursue voles in the grass, watch brazen coyotes run in threesomes through the field. No other humans are visible, just nature! And yet, one mile away is the darling Pioneer Store, which amazingly stocks everything I may have forgotten to include for my stay! Mink River Conservancy is very nearby as well.

Fabulous NYE Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Our group of 8 decided to get away NYE for some relaxation, cross-country skiing, and time with friends. Pat was very helpful and ensured our group had everything we needed for our stay. The cottage itself is tastefully decorated and super cozy. The kitchen was great and well equipped with everything we needed for all our meals. Even the weather was perfect as we woke up to fresh snow and the sun our first full day. We drove about 10 minutes to the state park to cross-country ski on groomed ski trails on Saturday and Sunday. The snow covered forest was breathtaking. A great start to 2017, we would definitely come back and recommend WHYTEFYSHE Cottage for any season.

This place made us feel at home, not just in a house

  • 5 of 5

This charming and beautiful wood-timbered home had every comfort we needed, plus all the charm of a well-cared-for and well-decorated country home. We enjoyed the four ample bedrooms, the screened porch, the outdoor seat-swing, the comfortable living room, and the spacious kitchen (perfect for multiple people to cook together.) Everything was in working order, even the remote controls on the room A/C units. We used the 2 charcoal grills and found nearly everything we needed in the kitchen except pizza pans, which we bought at the grocery store and left there for someone after us to make your own. Although the house has no water view, we really enjoyed watching the gentle light change throughout the day over the backyard meadow and the active dragonflies in the milkweed and prairie plants. Watching the clear night sky around the campfire was the ultimate vacation experience--now we were really out of the city! In our week stay with our young adult kids and partners, we went to three state parks--including riding two ferries to Rock Island--enjoyed a Northern Sky Theater musical comedy show, a big band jazz concert at Birch Creek Music Center, and an ice cream cone everyday! Door County is really an unusual mix of both cultural and natural delights. Our stay at Whytefishe helped us enjoy both.

Beautiful, Very Special Retreat

  • 5 of 5

We spent four wonderful days here, and were so sad to leave! This is a unique, lovingly maintained property with tremendous character. The location is perfect - it's close to "town" in Ellison Bay, yet you feel a million miles away. It's large enough to host a small family reunion (as we did), with a kitchen that begs for collaborative cooking. The firepit is the perfect spot for stargazing, and we had a lot of fun playing badminton. And the WiFi works just fine :). We loved our time at Whytefyshe, and hope to return one day.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Susan! You already know that I 'tweaked' the library just for your special interests and brought up extra books from my own library for your 8 yr old son. I do hope you all return next year! Warmly, Pat

Very nice stay

  • 5 of 5

We went to Door County on a few days fishing trip - 5 guys. The place we usually stay was booked on the days we want to go. I found this home on VRBO. It was a great find. Plenty of room for 5 guys. The kitchen was plenty big for us to cook all our meals. I only wish the home had cable or a ish to get weather conditions for incoming storms, and for the NHL and NBA playoff games. We will hopefully get back for another stay next year

Owner's Response: Brian, there is Wi-Fi in the house. Most guests use their cell phones for storm alerts. I purposefully do not have dish or access to television because I have tried to make the place one in which people comport themselves in a manner different from what they would do in a place WITH television: some people choose to go to a bar down the street to watch games. Then they come back to quieter activities in my house. Nearly every room in the house has a radio so one could hear news and storm alert. I do hope to have you return next summer! Thanks for your review!

Restful and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our restful weekend in Door County at this beautiful getaway cabin. The kitchen is so well-equipped we were able to make and enjoy our meals and snacks without searching for needed gadgets, pots and pans. We loved sitting at the counter (with enough stools for everyone) sharing stories and camaraderie. The main room of the cabin has many cozy sofas and chairs to keep everyone comfy late into the evening. We appreciated that the cabin is close to town yet so secluded it feels very private.

My husband and I have been staying in Door County for 27 years. Whytefyshe is our favorite place to stay. If you like peace and quiet and do not need to be connected to your phone 24/7 you will enjoy the beautiful charming home. The house is huge and clean. We like to spend the morning hiking at Newport State Park along Lake Michigan. You can also bike all around the tip of the thumb with very little traffic. Our favorite thing to do is to take the ferry to Washington Island to bike and then head over to Rock Island to tour the restored lighthouse. There is a nice fire pit out in the meadow next to the house to have bonfires and cook s'more's at night. It's a very relaxing property to get away from it all.

Owner's Response: Linda forgot to mention that she has been back three times - each year she and her husband come up and write lengthy descriptions in the on site guest book, raving about the hiking and biking, and yes, my house as well.

Frequent Art Fairs, Many Artists in Vicinity, great biking, close to The Clearing, within walking distance to an adorable old fashioned but fully stocked Pioneer Store - anything you forgot to bring they will have. This home is bikable to a wonderful park on Lake Michigan, also close to Rowley Bay and great for those of you who want to kayak/canoe the Mink River!
