About the property

Sleeps 10. Luxurious, light and very spacious, 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms.

The Old School sits in the tiny hamlet of Mordington Clappers, 4 miles inland of Berwick-upon-Tweed and dates back to the mid-19th Century and is a grade 2 listed building. It was converted in 2006 after many years as a School (until the 2nd World War) village hall and community centre. It retains many of it's original features including wood panelling and large sash windows.

The main house has 3 bedrooms (2 doubles and a twin). There is a double sofa bed in the lounge which adds flexibility of sleeping arrangements. There is also a self contained 'flat' to the rear of the main house offering spacious accommodation for 2 to 4 people which is ideal for a family group.

The internal layout of the main house is modern and benefits from central heating. The cloakroom/boot room leads to the large newly fitted and well equipped oak kitchen/breakfast room. This leads to a very large, open plan, lounge and formal dining area with an additional sitting area to the rear of the room with a double sofa bed. This whole area has original wood panelling throughout. An open staircase takes you to the 1st floor which has 3 lovely bedrooms. (2 doubles and a twin room). One of the double bed rooms has a 2 seater sofa and the other has 2 easy chairs. There is a very large family bathroom with double shower and roll top bath and an ensuite bathroom to the master bedroom. The first floor has a number of floor to ceiling and velux windows which add light and character to the accommodation.

The self contained flat to the rear of the school has a double bedroom (with additional double sofa bed), a sitting area and an ensuite bathroom.

The Old School has been designed to cater for all your needs, featuring up-to-date appliances and plentiful facilities. All linen and towels are provided, as are basic stocks of spices, condiments and fresh coffee beans. We provide a welcome pack and an information pack and extensive literature on activities in the local area, including walking guides, bird-watching books and other useful information.

The Old School is a perfect place to relax, unwind and watch the world go by. Most passing traffic tends to be farm machinery as the Old School is located in rural / farming land, so you can guarantee an uninterrupted and hassle-free stay.

You may choose to simply relax and socialise in The Old School. You can cook and eat informally in the kitchen / breakfast room, or more formally at the big oak dining table. Of course you may also choose to dine out at one of the range of excellent local restaurants.

Feel free to use the extensive array of glassware in the cocktail cabinet to chill out with a good wine, cocktail or a wee dram of Scotch Whisky!

You could even host your own murder mystery dinner. A number of fun murder mystery games are provided for you to have a go. We have had many memorable nights playing amateur sleuth and had great fun!

We have endeavoured to provide everything you need to make your stay a memorable occasion. In The Old School you'll find a range of books and DVDs. Please feel free to use them.

The little ones have their own place in the house. In a special area of the lounge they'll find a table and chairs where the Teacher Bear (Bruin) presides over activities! Children love this area – they can have a tea party, draw and colour and even play school in The School!

For the more active there are walks, beaches, historic sights to see. A wealth of other activities are available in the local area The location is an ideal base for exploring the cities of Edinburgh and Newcastle and is also perfect for exploring , the Scottish Borders and the Northumberland coast which are rural and coastal areas of great natural beauty and tranquillity, yet are full of life and rich in history. There are plentiful attractions and activities of all types as well as numerous eateries. The Old School is 10 minutes drive from the nearby beaches of Scremerston, Coldingham and Spittal. The spectacular Northumberland coast is easily accessible and it is only a 20 minute drive to Bamburgh (with the famous castle), Seahouses (with boat trips to the Farne Islands) and Holy Island. The Old School is located within easy reach of a number of links golf courses, the nearest of which is in Berwick Upon Tweed some 4 miles away. Do feel free to use the set of golf clubs provided for your convenience at the Old School.

The Old School is so spacious it lends itself to family get-togethers with the wider family and groups of couples and / or friends. Holidays in all seasons are fun at The Old School and special times such as Christmas and New Year can be celebrated here.

About Helen Dempster

Andrew is an Architect living in Manchester and Helen recently retired. We bought the Old School in 2007 as a holiday home where we could relax and escape the pressures of work! We have spent many happy times there with family and friends in all seasons. We have worked hard to lovingly and sympathetically restore and enhance it to a very high standard. We made the decision to offer the property to rent recently and it will be available to rent from November 2012. We wanted to retain the use of it ourselves as the Old School and local people have become dear to us. We hope that people who rent it will be renting year after year as they too are charmed by the property and the area.... Year purchased: 2010

Why Helen Dempster chose England

We chose this property to use initially as a holiday home but with the intention of retiring here as an escape from the rat race. Unfortunately, Mr Dempster has another 5 years to work so we are letting it to guests whom we are sure will love it too.

The Old School is so spacious and full of character. We loved the area as it is a quiet rural location with the advantage of a town and all it's facilities (Berwick Upon Tweed) only 5 minutes drive away.

What makes this house unique

It is easy to imagine life as it was when pupils attended school here. Some local villagers were pupils at the Old School and it was the focus of all social activities when it became a village hall until it was converted into a luxury house in 2006.

It has a warm feeling, a happy place. We loved the huge windows and all the light and space. All rooms are spacious and the living space is perfect for entertaining.

(SEE THIS 5 STAR REVIEW ON TRIP ADVISOR) The Old School really is a home away from home. We stayed for a long weekend in December and we couldn't ask for any more.

The location is perfect with plenty to do and the Old School itself was luxury and extremely well equipped. My 3 year old particularly loved bear corner and playing with the toys. (I suppose you could never have enough toys when you're three)

Helen made the booking process so simple and was very easy to get hold of and speak to if we had any queries.

In all we all thoroughly enjoyed ourselves and it was nice to be able to all sit together on an evening which isn't something you usually get when a large group go away together.

I wouldn't hesitate in returning to the Old School in the future.

Best Holiday Yet!

The Old School offers something for everyone! We have holidayed in the UK for the last 15 years and the Old School is the most comfortable well resourced accommodation we have stayed in! The Bear Corner and ballet room were great hits with our daughters and nephew! Helen and Andrew have really gone the extra mile to ensure that their guests our well catered for: providing complimentary cleaning products and toiletries as well as a very well stocked lardered cupboard and fantastic welcome pack with home made cake! Helen also organised a lovely birthday cake for our eldest daughter!

We had the most fantastic time the area is beautiful, there is loads to do (with or without children) and the Old school is a home from home after a long day out!

We would heartily recommend it and will definitely be returning!!!!

Home away from home

Old School is a top of the range establishment with a homely feel. All ameneties available, washing machine, dishwasher etc. The location away from the hustle and bustle of town-life makes for an ideal venue for a relaxing stay, still close enough to the town of Berwick upon Tweed. Welcome cake made our stay special from arrival. Great walks in area and the coast is beautiful. Visit to Northumberland a must.

What a Find

We had a very enjoyable stay at the Old School in May this year. The property is stunning and everything was provided - even down to a bread maker! It is also well situated close to Berwick itself and close to Lindisfarne (a must) and Bamburgh Castle. Even when it rained we had a lovely relaxing day at home watching videos and relaxing with a glass or two. Well done Helen and Andrew - we shall return.

Rural luxury and comfort

We knew the area well, so were delighted to book a break at the Old School. The house is extremely comfortable and blissfully well appointed, decoration looks fresh. The beds are sumptuous, the furnishings stylish and tasteful. We could imagine the lounge in its former schoolroom days, the character has remained. We have already booked our return trip with friends! Rural location but near to amenities in Berwick. Be sure to try the fishmongers (roundabout A1 Berwick) for the deals. Walking on the Berwick city walls and the costal path at St Abbs head are a must. Lindisfarne 15 minutes by car.
