Boll Holiday Cottages
About Maria Machin
I grew up in Northern Ireland with my 2 siblings. I finished my schooling and then went and completed my degree in Human Nutrition and Dietetics. While on holiday in Corfu I met Colin from Alloa in Scotland who is now my husband. Colin is an architect and has had his own practice now for 24 years. We went on to have our lovely girls and lived in Alloa for a while. We bought Boll Farm in Alva then a derelict site in early 2000, where we created our home and our 5 holiday Cottages. I love being here and enjoy meeting all my guests from all parts of the globe.
Maria Machin purchased this Cottage in 2000
Why Maria Machin chose Alva
As I said before Colin and I lived in Alloa for the first few years of our marriage. As Colin was an architect he was always looking for an old building to recreate and put his own stamp on. We passed by Boll Farm many a time and wished that we could buy it. It eventually cam on the market and we jumped at the chance to purchase it. Boll Cottage is the original old farm house and a very lovely cottage.
What makes this Cottage unique
When we saw the farm originally we fell in love with the views and its potential. We knew the site would make a lovely home and also create a business for me to run, hence once our house was built and we had refurbished Boll Cottage we then went on to build a further 4 cottages.

We really enjoyed our stay in Ben Cleuch Cottage. We had everything we needed and Maria was the most delightful host. The kids loved all the space out the back to run around (and burn off energy). The cottage is within walking distance of the wee local Co-Op (supermarket) and it is only a short drive to Stirling Castle and the Wallace Monument...just to name a couple of the beautiful places to visit in the area. We also loved being able to walk across the road to visit the gorgeous 'Heilan Coos'. Thank you for everything Maria. We hope to return and stay again!
Beautiful cottage with Beautiful views
Our stay was brilliant. Cottage was lovely, beds was comfortable, huge back garden for the dog. Over all fantastic. Would highly recommend.
Great location and comfortable accommodation but needs to be properly cleaned.
The location was very convenient to local services, and also close to Stirling and most other places of intetest.
The villa was comfortably furnished and generally satisfactory, with lovely surroundings and views.
However, there were a few problems -
wifi not working for first few days until fixed,
Washing machine mouldy inside,
Greasy pans in cupboard,
Windows need cleaning and cobwebs removed,
Sofa crevices full of detritus, need vacuuming.
Shower does not drain properly, may be blocked.
Beautiful and tranquil
Maria the owner is such a welcoming and lovely just that we instantly felt at home. The cottages overlook a beautiful lawn and the toddler of the group loved the playground 5 minutes drive away. The cottage itself is well situated with the sights of the Blair Drummond safari park, stirling castle, Falkland Palace being within an hour's drive away. Loved this place so much. Would absolutely recommend!
Gorgeous Cosy Cottage in a beautiful, peaceful location
The Cottage was comfortable, spacious enough (4 adults + 2 teenagers) for us all.
We loved the garden and the views. We visited Edinburgh (by train) Stirling and Wallace Monument whilst there. Great Chinese take out (Capital Chinese).Convenient Co-op for items needed within walking distance. Host Maria was lovely and communicative. Helpful that host lives on site. Everything we needed was provided for.
Lovely accommodations near the Wallace Monument
We really enjoy this apartment which is part of a farm turned into vacation flats near Stirling and the William Wallace Monument. Our house for lovely, and the accommodations were just right for a family of six. Our hosts/the owners were very hospitable. The nearby village was quiet and peaceful, with a lovely highland cattle farm across the street from our flat. I would highly recommend.
