Located within a quick walk to Main Street in Highlands, NC, yet nestled among a majestic forest of native plant species, this modern architect’s home offers guests the perfect combination of getting away while keeping you within steps of the local shops, restaurants and activities.
The architect, who designed and still owns the home, had a vision for creating spacious, naturally well-lit rooms that promote healing and relaxation. Local artisans constructed every detail of this multi level home with superb execution, including the antique heart pine flooring, stone fireplaces, and a large deck which boasts a spectacular view of the mature hardwood forest and creek below.
Leading you to the home, a gently winding, private driveway ushers guests through a small meadow of ferns and rare plant species, such as pink lady's slippers and trilliums. As you approach the house this singular driveway leads to an entry circle at the main entrance, and an auxiliary drive curves around to the rear entrance of the home with ample options for parking along both routes.
While hiking trails and waterfalls are plentiful in the Highlands area, this home offers guests a chance to explore nature just outside its doorstep. An easy hike along a cleared trail leads down to Mill Creek which runs through the property. Along the way trekkers can easily spot a vast array of plant species and organisms, such as salamanders, lichen, and fungi, which reach their highest level of biodiversity in this region. There are also many trees and mosses that are endemic to Appalachian Mountains so there is nowhere else in the world in which they live. Throughout all four seasons, the creek is a magical place for children and adults to explore and engage all of the senses.
The main entrance of the home leads to one wing of the house which includes the living room, one of two master bedrooms and a full bathroom. The living room accommodates two people on a sleeper sofa and also offers access to the deck via sliding glass doors. This first master bedroom has a queen size bed and a large window with a view of, mountain laurels and rhododendrons.
The dining room is located just off the entrance wing of the house and is the gateway to the kitchen. The dining room features sliding glass doors on two out of four walls which allow for natural lighting and a cool mountain breeze when open. A long, linear kitchen can be accessed from the dining room as well as the breakfast room, which is a less formal space with large windows on two of the walls. The breakfast room has a table and chairs for dining as well.
Three bedrooms are on the same level of the home as the dining room, kitchen, and breakfast room. Two of these three bedrooms have queen size beds and large windows looking out into the forest. The third bedroom also has large windows looking out into the forest but it features a daybed with a twin sized trundle bed that can either remain low or lifted up to the height of the daybed to create a king sized bed. The bathroom in this wing of the home has two rooms, the first of which contains a full size front loading washer and dryer, a larger counter top, and sink. The second room of the bathroom has a sink and a full size bath/shower..
With access via a half flight of stairs off the dining room on one end and half a flight of stairs off the breakfast room on the other end, the family room is on yet another level of the home and has a multitude of windows with views of the sky in one direction and treetops in the other. A small table with seating for four allows guests to play a game of chess or work on a puzzle while others gather to chat, watch a movie on the large screen tv or challenge each other to a Wii game. This gathering space is quite large and has plenty of space for guests to lounge on a sofa and recliners or move around freely to play a game of charades!
The third level of the home is comprised of the second master bedroom and bathroom and is accessed via a half flight of stairs off the family room. This master bedroom has lots of open space and features a king sized bed with breathtaking views of the treetops and forest below. The bathroom has two rooms with a sink in each and an over sized standing shower.
A small loft is yet one more half a flight of stairs up from the second master bedroom and has a small love seat that opens up into a twin sized bed. The loft is the only space on the fourth level of the home and is a perfect reading nook for the bookworm of the family or can be used to watch a movie on the small television.

About Jane and Dennis DeWolf
Dennis and I have lived in Highlands for nearly 45 years. We raised our 3 children in this home and they have each moved on and have their own families. Jennifer, Wendy, and Dennis, Jr explored and played in the woods and creek that surround the property throughout childhood. All three of the kids went to the K-12 Highlands School where I taught for over 30 years. I am now retired from full time teaching, but still enjoy substituting in the middle and high school classes at Highlands School. When I am not working I enjoy playing tennis and pickle ball. I also enjoy sewing and machine embroidery. My husband, Dennis, is a semi-retired architect. One of his last major projects with his firm, DeWolf Architecture, is The Bascom, a visual arts gallery and teaching facility. This unique structure is a very short walk from the house. When he finds time he also enjoys tennis and pickle ball for both fun and exercise. Dennis and I both enjoy camping and hiking. One of our favorite places is the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. We also do some volunteer work there when time permits. We hope that you and your family and friends will enjoy our house as much as we have. Please feel free to contact us with any questions you have about our property or the surrounding area.

Great Holiday Week
We had a very nice time and really enjoyed having a taste of winter. The kids loved hiking down to the stream and seeing icicles. The house had more stairs than I realized which made it a little more of a challenge for Dad than we expected but he did great and we had fun. I would normally expect a little more refined finishes for the price but I realize we were paying a holiday premium so it didn't bother me. We enjoyed meeting Denise and learning the history of the house.
Great pick for our Christmas family gathering!
I had 16 family members in Highlands for a few days during the Christmas holidays. My house couldn’t hold everyone and we needed a second house. They were very happy with their accommodations at the DeWolf’s home. The house was perfect for our needs and the extra touches were much appreciated. We needed to do overflow cooking and the DeWolf’s well equipped and modern kitchen was just the ticket. If we need more rooms in the future we would pick the DeWolf’s home first. Thank you Dennis and Jane!
Fabulous house and location.
Wonderful. Had a family Thanksgiving there and had everything we needed in the kitchen to cook our meal. Beds comfortable. The layout of the house gave us plenty of room to spread out but the deck and living room gave us room to be together. If you want a fire in the many beautiful fireplaces you may want to ask the owner about getting wood delivered.
Awesome, comfortable and convenient
4 couples from our Home Fellowship Group spent an awesome weekend in this unique home. It was comfortable and very close to the main area of down town Highlands. The Home and it’s owners, Jane and Dennis, provided just about everything we needed, and they were very hospitable. We shopped, fished, went to see waterfalls, and relaxed. We hope to be able to spend time there again in the future.
Charming house close to downtown Highlands
Six of us stayed here, with two kids, and really enjoyed ourselves. The nearby hiking and the back porch were big pluses. Super close to downtown Highlands. The owners were very friendly and helpful. Definitely would go back on a return Highlands trip.
Most wonderful home rental ever!
We've stayed at a number of rental homes and this was our absolute favorite! We spent several days here and had an amazing time. The house is located less than 5 minutes from the town of Highlands but you feel like you are in your own wooded world away from everyone. Our children adored the creek (and the lovely trail down to it) and spent hours playing in it each day.
The house is awesome. I'm not an architectural expert, but the layout and the wonderful natural light throughout the house reminded me of Frank Lloyd Wright homes. I could have spent hours looking at the design, all the windows that let light in on all angles, and the beautiful natural materials used in construction.
People often say that rental homes have everything you need ... and then they don't. This one really did. The owners had outfitted the home with everything you might need for cooking and entertaining. The bedding and towels were lovely too. And our family enjoyed an old fashioned game of "Clue" in the living room.
We wished we could have stayed longer and hope to return to explore the area again!
Thank you so much for the glowing review! We were so fortunate to have you as guests in our rental home. We hope you get the opportunity to come visit again in the future!
