A Magical Memory

I cannot say enough about our stay in this home. The owner, Joelle, is wonderfully communicative and very considerate. We had own entrance, and everything we needed (paper towels, toilet paper, towels, hand soap, dish soap, plates, forks, pans, mugs, etc) was provided.

It is an upstairs apartment, so if you have mobility issues, it might be something to be cognizant of, but otherwise I think it is perfect. The apartment manages a wonderful balance of history, and modern convenience. It is clean, open and very spacious. The kitchen was perfect for four people, and the fridge was clean and smelled fresh (I travel for work, and believe me that is a big PLUS). The living room space, is cozy, and does have a large television and game system. The washer and dryer are right outside of the kitchen, in the private hall, and are easy to work as well.

One bedroom has two windows that open up onto the private balcony, and the other has giant windows that look directly out onto beautiful Lousiana Ave. The beds feel firm and have toppers on them, sheets were obviously fresh. The also have enough space to hide suitcase underneath if you are staying for a while.

The home is a three to five minute walk from the start of Magazine, and (in the opposite direction) a three to five minute walk away from the St. Charles Streetcar. Magazine offers great boutique shopping, and amazing options for local food. The St. Charles street car gives you access to fantastic food on Oak St, Audubon Park, the Zoo, Tulane, and Loyola, as well as the French Quarter. Just about a block away from the street car is a wonderful market, and you have drug stores all around.

I try and go down to New Orleans a couple of times a year to see my family, and this was as comfortable as staying with them. But, if you do not know the city well, Joelle, does an impressive job of staying in enough contact to help, but also giving you privacy.

Essentially our stay was perfect. I highly, highly recommend this property. Truly my only hesitance is that I don't want too many people to know about it, so I can book it again on our next trip.

Great location and space but can be very noisy!

First the positives: this is a great location providing wonderful walking access to Magazine Street, St. Charles Avenue and much of the Garden District. Parking out front is also generally easy unless there is a nearby parade. The ceilings are high, the windows tall and plentiful, and the few furnishings are comfortable giving the apartment a great light and airy feel. The beds are comfortable and the refrigerator, stove, dishwasher, microwave and shared washer/dryer all work fine. A few minor areas for improvement include: (1) no sponge or scrubbing utensil of any kind was available - we looked everywhere (luckily we did not need to cook and most of our take our food resulted in no dishes and not much mess to clean up); (2) no side tables or reading lights for the beds; (3) no trash receptacles besides the kitchen and bathroom, meaning one must make piles of tissues or other trash and then carry them by hand to one of the two receptacles; (4) the cable TV was not working for most of our stay, though I can't say this was a major inconvenience as there were only a couple of times when we tried using it. The owner did check in with us about the cable but at no point did she ask how we were doing or if we needed anything. Nor did she communicate about our departure accept to check that we would be out by 11:00 am and respond to our inquiry about stripping beds and cleaning up to say that housekeeping would take care of it.

Now for the part about the noise: When we booked our 8-night stay a couple of months in advance, I had seen a review noting that noise could be a problem so I contacted the owner, to ask about it. In her defense, she noted that while the Louisiana Avenue sewer replacement project was done, work was still being done on repaving the street and she could not guarantee that there would be no noise. I thought that was a reasonable response but on the Monday after our weekend arrival I was woken at 7am to the sound of a backhoe which spent the next several mornings digging holes and trenches on the Avenue approximately 50 feet from the bedroom window. Even when the backhoe went away, there was the sound of huge dump trucks going and coming regularly every weekday morning. My wife and son were able to sleep through the noise by using ear plugs but I am a light sleeper and am not comfortable using ear plugs so sleep was brief for me most nights. This should not be a problem for early risers or when the street work is done.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your feedback. We are glad that you enjoyed your stay in the city and definitely appreciate your comments. In response, we have added additional sponges to the kitchen for cleaning dishes. We have also added small garbage cans to bathroom and each bedroom. There are two small reading lights next to each bed. The switch can be hard to find. I am sorry about the noise! They are now working on resurfacing the street. This is the last stage! It has been a very long process on MANY major roads in New Orleans. Unfortunately during your visit was the time they had to dig up the existing asphalt. We agree! It was a loud week. Our apologies.

Up until now, I have always been very happy with places that we have booked through VRBO so I was sadly disappointed. The good things were the comfortable beds, the water pressure was fine, and there was a coffee maker. Otherwise I just kept thinking "Really?" The house sits on a corner and there was road work on both streets. Even at night, without the roadwork, the street in front is noisy. There are always lots of sirens and I think that being so near the hospital may have been part of that. The apartment is supposed to accommodate four people but the sitting room only had a couch and a decorative iron chair. There was no table to eat at so four people could not have sat down comfortably anywhere. In keeping with the accommodation for four, there were four settings of flatware. Upon finding that there was neither a corkscrew or a can opener, I really appreciated that there was a coffee maker, it seemed so extravagant. There were no chests of drawers to put things in so clothes were left in our bags or in piles on the floor. There weren't many clothes hangers so the ones we found all needed up with several things on them. There was no towel rack so we hung towels from doorknobs. There were no throw blankets, reading lights, or anything like that, nothing extra other than a TV and we weren't in New Orleans to watch TV.

Owner's Response: Our apologies for your disappointing stay in New Orleans. We wish you would have let us know in person instead of rating our home a 1 Star. You mentioned several small things in your review but nothing that would lead most to a one star review. Either way, I will try to address your issues for future potential guests. First, New Orleans is a loud city! Our home is located in the heart of the action. You will hear boats in the night going down the Mississippi River, couples strolling down the sidewalk at 3am, and also sirens, parades, second lines, construction, etc. I would recommend the suburbs if his is an issue. This apartment does not have a dining room or a table. Most enjoy eating out while in town. Each bedroom has a spacious closet for storage. Thank you for letting us know that the bottle openers had all disappeared. This is an essential and we definitely would have brought you one had you inquired. We hope you enjoyed your trip. New Orleans is unique and people either love or hate the charm.

Great location. Clean but sink did not drain and shower curtain dirty. Very sparsely furnished.

Great location. Home is quaint. However home was sparsely furnished, no extra linens provided, pillows flat, and bathroom sink dis not drain. Shower curtain was dirty. No lamps in beadrooms. Beware of construction which was all around the house. Wish we would have known. Bedrooms need better curtains to block light. Needed rugs to quiet noise. No table to eat.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your comment and feedback. Although we strive for all guests to give five star reviews we understand this is not always possible. We noticed the sink and addressed this upon your departure and have replaced the shower curtain which was only a few months old. Bedroom lamps, extra linens will be in each room by January 1st. All residents of our beautiful city are tired of the city’s road construction. Bourbon street, St Charles, Jefferson Ave, Naplolean, Louisiana Ave, and countless side streets. Thankfully, the larger projects are coming to a close. The side road construction on Coliseum was due to a “sink hole” and water leakage. Fortunately, this is all being addressed quickly and should not impact future guests. We encourage future guests to message us for honest updates on any and all of these concerns. Thank you.
