Santo Domingo de Heredia is one of the nicer residential towns in Costa Rica. Situated only 12 km north of San Jose, 6 km east of Heredia (the provincial capital) and a short drive from San Jose International airport (SJO), it is surrounded by coffee plantations, and its main inhabitants stem from the original planters' families.
Houses have well maintained exteriors, splendidly kept interiors and luxurious gardens, particularly behind many original adobe dwellings, such as ours.
Your hosts Anne and Adrian live adjacent to these independent units in their more than 150-year old Adobe house. We speak Spanish, Dutch, English, French, German and Italian and want to make sure that you feel comfortable.

Coming from Switzerland and after having lived in various European and Middle Eastern countries, always active in the hospitality industry. (multinational hotel corporations) we, Adrian ( 78) and Anne (74), retired to Costa Rica in 1996. We had already visited Costa Rica previously for several years, speak the language and like its friendly people and excellent year 'round climate.
Adrian was born in Holland, went to college in Belgium, hotel school in Switzerland and worked himself up from dishwasher to hospitality consultant for multinational hotel corporations.
Anne was born in Great Britain and worked in tourism, ran own activities in Switzerland and Costa Rica and dedicates most of her time to social services. (Women's Club of Costa Rica)
Gumbo Limbo Tropical purchased this apartment in 2001
After having lived several years in Santo Domingo de Heredia, we purchased our present, over 150-year old, adobe house because we liked the style, size and its central location in this town which has a pleasant year 'round climate, a decently organized municipality and pleasant town people.
We added an apartment, and later a studio, for friends and family who intended to visit us, not really planning vacation rentals. Acquaintances suggested to offer these two units available to a wider public. So far this has worked out rather well for both our guests and ourselves.
We're near the center of town, with most important facilities in walking distance. It's a quiet and safe town, with a year 'round pleasant climate, clean air and nice people in our neighborhood. From here it's easy to move around the country: Caribbean and Pacific coasts, national parks, volcanoes, etc. Bus services in Costa Rica are excellent, so that a rental car is often not necessary.
We've always tried to be outgoing hosts towards travelers and our experience with guests has been most positive: several have become true friends.
We enjoyued our stay in the studio apartment. Two months passed quickly. We covered a lot of ground, around Santo Domingo, and a lot of that on foot.We thank you for all your kindness during our stay with you. We miss the sunshine. Art and Elishka - Vancouver, Ca.
We have been staying at Gumbo Limbo Tropical for nine years. It is truly one of the gems of Costa Rica. The accommodations are warm and comfortable with every thing provided for your stay. Forget the hotels in San Jose, this place is waiting for you! Santo Domingo is a great little Tico town. We always feel safe walking the streets, even late at night. Ann and Adrian
Kreupeling are such good hosts. They have lived in Costa Rica for 20 years and they really have things figured out on how to help you have the best Tico experience possible.
My husband and I came from Europe to visit Costa Rica for the first time. It was a long trip but our stay of a month with Anne and Adrian in Santo Domingo was worth every minute of it. We do not know if were more excited either by Costa Rica, its wonderful people and weather or the friendliest hosts ever and perfect accommodation. We got even more than we could expected in our dreams or get anywhere for that money. We had the vacation of our life. Thanks so much Anne and Adrian and expect us next year.
We live in the North of Costa Rica and once in a while have to visit the capital San Jose. We stay in Sto. Domingo, because it is conveniently connected by public transport and the accommodation is like staying at a self-contained hotel suite at much lower rates. We give it 5 stars.
It will not be easy to meet such a gracious, kind and lovely couple as Anne and Adrian. This was our sixth visit to Costa Rica and they made it more difficult for us to leave.. We miss them as well as Costa Rica. Our stay was short, too short in their lovely and comfortable apartment upstairs. They thought of everything. Anything you would want is furnished in their apartment and studios. We mentioned a mircowave and there it was upon our arrival. Thanks Adrian. Anne even showed us around Santo Domingo and the grocery store. All is all, not to keep going on and on,this was a truly pleasurable and comfortable visit, thanks to Anne and Adrian. Looking forward to our next visit.

I stayed here for a month (Feb 2011). Helpful, polyglot, entrepreneurial, good-hearted European owners. Santo Domingo and this property are not for partyers but you could do a number of day trips or side trips from here. The studio apartment is over the owners' garage which is not a noise problem for the guests really and if you were making some noise yourself you wouldn't be disurbing anyone under you.
My main purpose was for a quiet retreat. I joined a local gym, Gimnasio Evolucion, and worked out every 2nd day, went for walks, did yoga every day, lost 9 pounds, fixed a sore neck and nearly drifted off into Perfect Peace.
Having a washing machine was very convenient and although I am addicted to the microwave at home, I didn't miss it here.
I have to say there was a bit too much auto exhaust from the street but I live in suburban Victoria BC and I am VERY spoiled that way. Some people might not have noticed but there's never a bad breath of air where I live so I was aware of it. Central America is a different story and fortunately there's always a breeze in Santo Domingo.
For me, this was a place to take up residence, shop locally, cook at home and relax.
And a very affordable rate, too! A lovely little apartment, pleasantly decorated, nice linens, clean, and bigger and in better shape than other places I have rented for the same rate.
Ideally located as a reasonably priced home base from where to visit unspoilt nature, meet the locals and travel the country.
