Puako (Pu-ah-ko) is a small, quaint oceanfront community on the Kohala Coast of the Big Island located about 30 miles north of Kailua-Kona and 22 miles north of the Kona airport. The island's largest white sand beach, Hapuna, is right next door.
Puako is conveniently located for visiting all the resort hotels and restaurants on the Kohala Coast. The Mauna Kea, the Fairmont Orchid, the Mauna Lani and Hilton Hotels are just minutes away with their beaches, first class restaurants, shops and world class golf courses. Kohala Divers is nearby at Kawaihae Center, and offers various ocean activities including scuba diving and sunset/afternoon sails. Kawaihae Center and Harbor are just 10 minutes by car, with several great restaurants and shops. You are close to almost any activity you may choose, with the exception of the volcano which is a 3 hour drive from Kohala.
Several fabulous beaches are minutes away. Hapuna Beach (voted best beach in Hawaii by Conde Nast Magazine) and Waialea Bay (Beach 69) both are wonderful for swimming, snorkeling and boogie boarding.
The neighborhood is called Puako, and it is conveniently located for touring all parts of the island. All homes in this neighborhood are on small acreage, so it is a very low density area. Driving time to the Kona airport is approx. 40 minutes, Kailua Kona 50 minutes, Waimea 20 minutes, Hilo 1½ hours, Captain Cook, coffee country, 1¼ hours, Hawi and Polulu Valley 20-30 minutes.
The sun shines 355 days per year and the average temperature highs are in the 80's with low's in the 60's. The ocean's edge is about 150 feet from your doorstep with crystal blue water that is 72-76 degrees year round.
Puako offers ideal fishing, snorkeling, diving, surfing and kayaking. Walking and biking is a favorite, too! Sea turtles, dolphins and whales are some of the sea life you may see. Puako offers beach style living and a real sense of getting away from it all.
Puako is rich in Hawaiian history. Walk south along the ocean trail to see the petroglyphs. There are approximately 3,000 petroglyphs scattered throughout the Puako Archaeological Fields. These pictures are etched into the lava rock that dominates the Kohala and Kona Coasts. Access to the Puako Petroglyph Park is through the adjacent Mauna Lani Resort.
The waters around Puako are extremely clear due to the fresh water run off and strong coastal currents. Divers and snorkelers can enjoy waters abundant in sea life along the shallow reef at Puako. The Puako Marine Preserve is a protected environment for endangered sea life. Green sea turtles are a protected species and should not be bothered, only enjoyed and admired. Watch the humpback whales play along the coast. Beyond Puako's reef shelf the whales play and breach during their migration to Hawaii from Alaska. It is quite a sight!
This property is unique in that it is nestled in a very quiet and upscale neighborhood and affords complete privacy for those seeking to disconnect and unwind. With panoramic views and the ocean just steps from cottage, we couldn't have been more pleased! With beautiful well kept grounds, fruit and citrus trees, a private pool and a tennis court, this property was better than a resort for having it all to yourself.
The cottage takes you back in time and the vibe is definitely Old Hawaiian which we loved. Nothing fancy, but we liked that it was authentic. There is wi-fi and cable TV if you must.
The cottage is well stocked with everything you need to prepare your own dinners and believe me, you will want to have your meals here! If you do venture out, there are two restaurants worthy of mention. Both in Waimea, the "Red Water Cafe" is casual and has an excellent lunch and dinner menu. I recommend the Fresh sushi rolls their home made cheese burgers.
"Merrimans" is more upscale and pricy, but the food, ambience and service there is good.
Get your fresh fish at Hale L'a Da Fish House. Bring a cooler, they will provide ice.
If you dive or snorkel, you can walk out your door and enjoy the reef with beautiful fish and coral. Careful for the rocks and entry, early morning is best for right in front of the house. There is another entry point a short walk to the left of property at the public access called the "keyhole" that provides a little easier entry. There, you will see more people as it is popular with locals and tourists.
I do not recommend swimming out front unless you are strong and experienced. The currents can be strong and change often.
There is great walk up sandy beach at Mauna Kea which is a short drive away. Perfect for kids and adults, you can spend the day.
If you like cats, and want to take a walk, there is a feral cat colony at the end of the road, but you must take the beach trail to the left of property, then go to end and turn into the parking lot at the public park to get to it. The cat colony will be on your left . If you take food, they all will come out which is pretty amazing! There are food and water bowls as they are fed by locals and a few even will let you pet them.
Overall, our stay at the cottage was a perfect fit for us. I would recommend it for those who enjoy Old Hawaiian style, privacy, tranquility and being on the ocean.
This was our second visit to Puako and we will be back again in the near future.
OMG!! Where do I start. We had the most amazing time at this cozy little place. The pictures are just what you get, very relaxing and amazing view. Sunsets are terrific!! Enjoyed the pool everyday. Walking along the tide pools was such fun and exciting to see the turtles and fish. WHALE watching was amazing!!!.
I know I used amazing a lot but that was the kind of trip we had at this beach house. Already planning for our next trip.
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Hale Malulani. The Pauko neighborhood was a nice quiet place with friendly people. The owners of the general store were helpful and friendly too (we did some shopping there but got most groceries from the nearby Foodland store). The house had everything as described in the listing, plus WiFi. My point of reference for many vacations is a cabin on a lake. This cottage was very much like that, except that is on the ocean. As with a lake cabin, location is key and this cottage has a great location. The sliding doors open with screens for 2/3 of the oceanfront side and you get wonderful breezes. We loved falling asleep to the sound of the ocean and waking to the sound of the birds.
We stayed there with our 5 year old daughter and it was perfect. She loved the pool and we enjoyed cooling off there most every afternoon. We also enjoyed the yard and the basketball and tennis court (they have paddle boards and tennis balls to use). We also used the bocce ball set, but didn't try the croquet. We also enjoyed walking out on the rocks at low tide.
They also have some beach chairs to bring to great beaches nearby (e.g. Hapuna). There were also some boogie boards and snorkel gear, but we didn't try them.
We definitely recommend this place to anyone that is looking for a quiet neighborhood and great location. It worked for us with one child and it would easily work for two children, but not for toddlers since there is the swimming pool and it is oceanside. The cottage has comfortable bedding and furniture, with a well equipped and functional kitchen. The only odd thing was the bathroom mirror was not above the sink due a window in that location.
If you want privacy, comfort and a gorgeous view in Puako, but aren't looking for high-end finishes, this funky, charming, and very livable beach house fits the bill. It was the perfect property for us. We loved cooling off in the pool while looking through a frame of palm trees at the ocean, visiting the turtles in the tidepools among the lava rocks, and having dinner right on the ocean front each night. Snorkeling and scuba diving right off the shore was excellent (bring reef shoes or dive booties unless you have very tough feet- there are urchins and sharp rocks on the way into the water). We loved the house so much we are already saving up for a return trip (and dreaming that we live there!).
The entire front of the house opens up with large screened doors, so the breezes are fabulous and nature surrounds you. Watching the stars while floating in the pool each night was a treat before going to sleep in the comfy bed. As a couple, we felt that the home was the perfect size. Every evening we made lilikoi cocktails and relaxed in the lounge chairs in the yard to watch the sunset. Every morning we had breakfast at the picnic table and coffee on the lava rocks, watching the francolins waddle across the lawn and the turtles waking up and swimming out to sea.
The kitchen, while older, is very well equiped. We made almost all of our meals at home (loved Da Fish Shack nearby for buying super fresh fish to grill and heading the Kamuela for groceries) and found every cooking gadget or utensil we needed. We don't play tennis, but kids would love the tennis court, the basketball hoop and the croquet set for the wide lawn. We even found some ripe mangoes that had fallen from the trees.
If you want impersonal resort-style luxury with granite counters and a spa bathroom, this isn't the place for you. If you want nature, views, shabby-chic comfort and an old-time Hawaiian vibe, you will find this home charming and relaxing. The neighborhood is quiet, friendly, and great for walks or jogging (either on the road or on the lava beach).
The management company is wonderful and responsive. We had a plumbing problem on a Saturday evening and it was taken care of with complete friendliness and competence in time for us to have a late dinner. I can't say enough good things about Aloha Debbie and their helpfulness and good cheer.
Overall, a wonderful beach property!
Spectacular whale watching in the winter! Right out your front window!
