Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 1 bath, sleeps 4

Disconnect from the fast pace of life at the Perfect Riffle Cabin. Enjoy this off-the-grid cabin in the heart of the Sapphire Mountains on the world famous Rock Creek. Our cabin offers the perfect base camp to enjoy all that Southwest Montana has to offer: river frontage to pristine trout waters, breathtaking hiking trails, big game hunting, or just a quiet place to get away and refresh.

Our rustic cabin set in the mountain valley is equipped with solar power to allow visitors to escape from home without leaving all the comforts behind. Two pull down ladders** enable access to lofts on either side. One loft has a full-size bed, while the other loft has two extra-long twin beds with trundles under each. For those that would rather not climp the pull-down ladder to access the lofts, there is a queen-size sleeper sofa on the main floor.

Although the cabin does have running water, it is equipped with an outhouse and not an indoor toilet. There is a rustic shower that is sufficient to rinse off after a day of fishing on the water.

This cabin truly allows you to disconnect - there is no cell service or wifi. For most carriers the cell service ends at the interstate turn-off, a great signal to our family that our relaxing vacation away is beginning!

From the front porch you can walk down the path to our river frontage and rock steps to the waters edge. Either throw in a line or cozy up in our adirondak chair with a great book. There is a rustic sandbox near the rivers edge for the kids, as well as horseshoe pits. Wind down in the evenings with a fire in the pit while everyone tells fish stories.

The entire 40 mile road through the Sapphire Mountains highlights many of the trails that spring from the roads edge. Hike through huckleberry patches or to raspberry bushes and enjoy the sweet morsels, if the black bears haven't gotten to them first!

**The stairs may not be well suited for anyone that may have difficulty navigating stairs and that children should be well supervised when on the stairs to prevent falls.

About Katrina Moon

We are an Air Force family of five that love to explore the outdoors. We found this gem while we were stationed in Great Falls, MT, and just knew we had to try and make it ours. Even though we were stationed away from Montana (kicking and screaming) we try to come back to our piece of heaven for two weeks every summer. Our kids treasure their time at the cabin (even without tv or any other media) and often tell us they'd rather just come and live here all the time. Wouldn't we all? Until that day comes when we can come back to Montana full time, we'd love to share our retreat with you! We especially love the fishing, but everything about this area just resonates with our souls. Hiking, floating, splashing, and especially fishing - we just love it all!. We hope you enjoy!

Charming cabin with plenty of space.

  • 5 of 5

We had a fabulous time at this cabin. Plenty of things to do. We didn’t fish only because the river was at a record high. Horseshoe competition, s’mores, and frisbee was a blast. We hiked over the swing bridge trail. We came across a moose cooling off in the river. Wow that was awesome! The cabin has all the accommodations and the beds are cozy. On our drive home we started planning our next trip to this cabin.

Owner's Response: We’re so glad you were able to enjoy so much of what our cabin and the Rock Creek area has to offer- even without much fishing! So lucky spotting a moose by the swing bridge! We’d love for you to come another time :)

The perfect rippen riffle

  • 5 of 5

We had a great time lots of fish and water from 1700 to 2700 CFS. From the beautiful browns rainbows and brookies you really can’t beat it. I love the cabin especially when it rained for 14 hours. Great to be back at rock creek, and I look forward to the next one. Maybe we can bring the kids and more family next time-lots of other activities too. I wish I’d have brought sugar for the hummingbirds-next visit. Thanks to Katrina and Preston for the great hospitality and fishing advice.

A River Runs Near It

  • 5 of 5

Amazing fishing, bears, deer, and big horn sheep what more could you ask for in a Montana vacation?

This was our second trip to the Rock Creek river as part of our annual fly fishing / camping trip, but our first staying in a cabin. Ultimately, it was the best decision. The cabin was very offered up a rustic feel while offering the comfort of a good nights rest and protection for our gear while we fished, went to town or just explored the terrain. Our primary focus was fishing the well known river (and the fishing was fantastic), but also found plenty of time to enjoy the large fields (competing in bocce, disc golf, and corn hole) surrounding the property. We had an amazing time and would definitely come back!!

Perfect homebase for fishing Rock Creek

  • 5 of 5

Two of my buddies came up from Denver for a fishing trip, and this place was a perfect home base for a couple of nights. Easy access to the river. We fished late into the night with headlamps, then walked back to the cabin and relaxed by the camp fire. We all were delightfully surprised by how comfy the beds were. The kitchen has everything you need including running water, refrigerator, coffee maker, and stove. There was even some coffee and condiments there for us to use. We prepared some great meals.

We loved this place and would definitely go back. But I'll share some advice so people know what they're getting into. The place is 21 miles away from the interstate, and the road to get there is a bit bumpy and dirt for over half. You're at least 15 miles from any store so make sure you've got everything you need before you get there. With that, there is no cell service at the cabin (a good thing in my opinion!). We were there in mid July, and knew the place would be hot since it has no A/C. So we immediately opened the windows (which have screens) upon arrival and the place cooled down to comfortable temp pretty quickly. There are no fans, but we didn't really need one anyway. The area can get a little buggy, so keep the doors shut. We ate our meals in the sunroom to enjoy the mountain air while remaining protected from the sun and the bugs. The restroom is an outhouse, but it was the nicest outhouse any of us had ever been in.

Zero complaints about this place. It had some simple luxuries and a nice homey feel to it. I'd definitely recommend it to anyone unless you are very high maintenance.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your kind words and we're glad you enjoyed your stay! Based on your comments we have added a few fans to the lofts to help cool it off during the day as well!

Map

Our cabin is 21 miles off the interstate, nestled in a valley with a few other cabins along Rock Creek in the heart of the Sapphire Mountains. Sightings of moose, bear, rocky mountain sheep, bald eagles, and deer are frequent in the picturesque mountain area. Numerous trailheads spring from the road, leading up into the mountains or past patches of huckleberries or raspberries, as long as the black bears haven't gotten to them first! The quaint town of Phillipsburg is about 25 miles away, holding gems such as the Sweet Palace - a delightful candy store that will take you back in time. You can also mine for Sapphires at Gem Mountain or enjoy some Montana local ice cream at the soda shop. Montana Moose Moss is our family favorite! Missoula is less than an hour away, making this mountain get-away a perfect home base for any Montana vacation.
