About Mary Veliquette

We have owned and managed our vacation rental since December of 2004, and we consider it a labor of love. Both of us have worked most of our lives for the State of California and live in Fair Oaks, CA. Mike is a graphic designer for the Department of Finance, and Mary recently retired after 27 years as a manager for California State Parks. Mary is a breast cancer survivor, but is doing well and enjoying retirement. Mike hopes to retire in a few years when we hope to spend more time hiking and cross country skiing in Tahoe.

Mary Veliquette purchased this cabin in 2004

Why Mary Veliquette chose Tahoe Island

We are nature lovers and animal lovers, and appreciate the variety of outdoor activities available in the area. We love to kayak from Kiva beach to Emerald Bay, hike in the Desolation Wilderness and other beautiful hikes in the area, snow shoe and cross country ski in Hope Valley, Camp Richardson and Fallen Leaf Lake areas. We recently began enjoying the newest lake sport, Stand Up Paddling (SUP), and found that our dog Kachina, a German Shepherd/Siberian Husky mix loves it too. This is truly our little piece of paradise!

While we never get to spend as much time as we'd like in Tahoe, we do make it a point to check-in for maintenance as much as possible. Work up here is never a burden as the clean crisp mountain air is so rejuvenating. We love that we can share our little piece of paradise with our guests, many of them returning year after year.

What makes this cabin unique

We love the rustic feeling of the cabin with the cedar siding and the quaint cottage feel of the interior. The vintage Wedgwood stove and oven add to the ambience, yet deliver wonderful cooking experiences all these years later. Mary loves to cook, so we try to make sure the cabin is well stocked both for us and for our guests. We stock the spice cabinet and the condiments regularly, and make sure that you'll have that gadget that you need for your special dish. If we don't have it, we want to know so that we can stock it for the future. We also invested in high quality mattresses in our two main bedrooms because we all need to wakeup to a great night's sleep.

Last, but one of the most important for us, is the ability to share our cabin with other pet loving people. We have a huge fenced back yard, a doggie door, we stock treats for your dogs, and go out of our way to provide everything you need for your canine family members, while still keeping the cabin fresh and clean so that people who don't have pets still love to stay here. We hope you will come and enjoy the cabin as much as we do!

Guestbook comments from the owner

"We had a fabulous time at your cabin. Everything was as comfortable, convenient and enjoyable as we had hoped. The woodburning stove and portable heaters kept us cozy as the snow came down. The dining room and kitchen were welcoming and large, providing us with some memorable meals and late night cocoa sessions. The reading materials were entertaining and useful. We perused much of the visitor's notebook on the coffee table and found some great trivia and ideas for exploration. Your recommendation to use the free shuttle to Sierra at Tahoe was greatly appreciated and turned out great. Our greyhound and chihuahua acclamated quickly to the snow and appreciated the large backyard. The beds were tremendously comfortable as were the linens and comforters. The location of your place made for some nice daytrips to several points on the lake, and overall we had a very relaxing getaway. I can't think of anything that could be improved, and I appreciated your help and courtesy. Thanks very much and we'll think of you in the future for our mountain adventures."

Loved it

The owners were terrific and the house clean and very well equipped. We have been to South Lake Tahoe 5 times and this is the favorite place we have rented. We can't wait to stay here again.

Cozy, warm mountain retreat!

  • 4 of 5

Perfect for a week in the mountains! The cabin has everything needed to enjoy your stay! Wood stove was great for the cold rainy days we had. The location at the”Y” makes it easy to get to anywhere you need to go! The dogs had plenty of room to run around the backyard!

Clean, quiet, pleasant cabin

  • 5 of 5

A very pleasant experience. The cabin is larger than the pictures make it look, and while everything is older, it's all perfectly functional and well equipped. Owners are very responsive and professional, their guest book instructions are in depth and all policies super reasonable. Don't come here to party hearty, but DO stay here to relax, unwind, and really enjoy yourself!

Cute cabin in a great location.

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed this cabin. The location is perfect. It's close enough to many activities yet far enough away from all the crowds in town. The dogs loved the fenced backyard. We loved the comfortable beds. The high one was interesting but fun to sleep on. There are lots of books to read and games to play. The owner, Mary, is super responsive, friendly and answers all questions quickly. And when you see that bear in the photos, that's not just to get you interested in this cabin. That bear is a regular and we got the privilege of seeing him or her several times during out five night stay. How exciting! We would love to come back.

Perfect Getaway cabin!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for a week with our friends and our dogs. The place was perfect for us to get away from the heat of Sacramento. Our dogs loved the very large backyard. The house is quite roomy and the beds are very comfortable. The location was great for all we had planned (relaxation). We were able to ride our bikes on the trails, drive to the nearby beaches, and take a short drive to the casinos. The house is close to stores, restaurants, and shops. I will definitely rent this house again!
